Papa Murphy’s to launch lower-cal, lower-carb line of pizzas

Jan. 26, 2004

VANCOUVER, Wash.—Seeking to satisfy diet-conscious customers, Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza will launch a new line of Thin Crust deLITE pizzas on Feb. 1.

According to a news release, the pizzas have nearly half the calories and less than half of the carbohydrates (about 13 grams per slice) of a standard Papa Murphy’s pizza.

Prices for the new pies will range from $4.99 to $6.99.

The new line includes:

* Thin Crust Veggie deLITE: creamy garlic sauce, cheese, spinach, mushrooms and Roma tomatoes

* Thin Crust Pepperoni deLITE: tomato sauce, cheese blend and pepperoni

* Thin Crust Meat deLITE: tomato sauce, cheese, pepperoni, pre-cooked Italian sausage and pre-cooked beef

* Thin Crust Cheese deLITE: tomato sauce and a cheese blend.

Weight Watchers has assigned three points per slice of the Thin Crust Cheese DeLITE, four points for the Pepperoni and Veggie deLITEs, and five points per slice of the Thin Crust Meat deLITE.

The product was tested in the western U.S. for five months.

In-store point-of-purchase materials, radio, television and print advertising will support the new line-up.

Papa Murphy’s is the sixth largest pizza chain in the country with nearly 800 Papa locations in 23 states. The company plans to open about 80 new restaurants in 2004.

Healthiest Menu Choices at Papa Murphy’s

I’m not a fast-food connoisseur by any means, but I love to indulge in the occasional slice of pizza. When I don’t have time to make my own pizza at home, one of my favorite things to do is call in an order to Papa Murphy’s and, as their slogan goes, “take and bake!” For me, the ingredients just seem fresher, and they have more topping options for a veggie-lover like me than other pizza chains do. Plus, it’s fun to cook it at home.

But, really, how healthy is the food at Papa Murphy’s? Do the meals meet our registered dietitian Rebecca Scritchfield’s healthy guidelines of having less than 500 calories and less than 500 milligrams of sodium, according to the the new daily sodium recommendations? We looked at the menu, and found the healthiest options based on that criteria. Below are the results!

Healthiest Meals at Papa Murphy’s

1. Have a slice of a large deLITE Thin Crust Pizza (1/10 of the pizza). I love that Papa Murphy’s has a light line just for people watching their waistlines! With 21 varieties of toppings, this thinner crust pizza gives you tons of flavor options to choose from. While any one slice of any variety of this crust comes in at 150 to 200 calories a piece, the sodium counts do vary. Most contain less than or just barely more than 500 milligrams a of sodium in one slice, but choose Veggie, Hawaiian, Herb Chicken Mediterranean, Gourmet Veggie, Chicken Pesto, Chicken Barbeque or Cheese to keep that sodium counter under 400 milligrams. Pair your slice of pizza with a piece of fruit or some raw veggies from home, and you have a filling and nutritious meal!

2. Have half a salad without the dressing and croutons. Papa Murphy’s also has a variety of salads to choose from. Have half of any salad without the dressing and croutons for less than 200 calories and 500 milligrams of sodium. You can choose from the Caesar Salad, Chicken Caesar Salad, Club Salad, Garden Salad or Italian Salad. Bring some low-sodium dressing from home or drizzle with a little olive oil and red wine vinegar, and you have a meal!

What I love about Papa Murphy’s is that there are so many different varieties of salads and light pizzas to choose from!

If you’re focused on eating healthy, maybe you’ve been avoiding the “p-word” for quite some time – but it’s time to rethink what pizza has to offer. We’ve compiled a list of the healthiest pizza places, as well as our top pick from each. So when it comes to pizza – there’s no more guilt, no more avoidance, and a whole lot more satisfaction (and veggies).

Blaze Pizza

Healthy Pick from Blaze Pizza: Veg Out

Ingredients: Red sauce, gorgonzola, mozzarella, mushrooms, red onions, zucchini

Nutrition: 130 calories per slice, 6 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar

Blaze Pizza is one of the healthiest pizza places, offering fresh ingredients and an option to build your own pizza (BYO). With freedom like that, you’re able to decide if you want to go all out with the veggies or pile your pizza with cheese.

Pieology

Healthy Pick from Pieology: Spicy Italian Pizza

Ingredients: Basil, crushed red pepper, garlic, red sauce, salami, sea salt, mozzarella cheese, spicy Italian sausage

Nutrition: 64 calories per slice, 3.7 grams of protein, .3 grams of sugar

If you’re lucky enough to have a Pieology in your town, you know it’s one of the healthiest pizza places with some of the best quality ingredients. Just like Blaze Pizza, you can create your own pie or choose from one of the “Chef-Inspired Pizzas.”

Domino’s

Healthy Pick from Domino’s: Veggie and Chicken Pizza

Ingredients: Chicken, spinach, tomatoes, black olives, mozzarella cheese

Nutrition: 185 calories per slice, 10 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugar

The Veggie and Chicken Pizza is part of Domino’s “Lighten Up” pizza series, offering other healthy options like the Veggie Pizza, the Chicken, Green Pepper, and Onion Pizza, the Chicken and Ham Pizza, and the Ham and Pineapple Pizza. Each of these pizzas has less cheese than the standard and is loaded with veggies and lean meat.

California Pizza Kitchen

Healthy Pick from California Pizza Kitchen: California Veggie

Ingredients: Broccoli, eggplant, mushrooms, red onions, corn, sun-dried tomato, mozzarella

Nutrition: 180 calories per slice, 8 grams of protein, 3 grams of sugar

You may recognize CPK from the frozen food section at the grocery store, but unless you have one nearby, you might not know they serve piping hot pizzas at their very own restaurant, too. California Pizza Kitchen offers a lot more than healthy pizza, though. The menu includes small plates, appetizers, flatbreads, soups, salads, main plates, and pasta.

And for those of you who are trying to avoid a carb load, California Pizza Kitchen now has a cauliflower crust available for an additional charge.

Pizza Hut

Healthy Pick from Pizza Hut: Veggie Lover’s Thin N’ Crispy Pizza

Ingredients: Onions, tomatoes, black olives, mushrooms, green peppers

Nutrition: 180 calories per slice, 7 grams of protein, 5 grams of sugar

Pizza Hut is not known for being one of the healthiest pizza places around, but it is making efforts to cater to the health-conscious crowd – The Veggie Lover’s pizza being one of their top sellers. Without the thick, greasy crust, you won’t have to worry about consuming too many carbs, and loads of veggies on top replace other fatty toppings.

Cici’s Pizza

Healthy Pick from Cici’s: Spinach Alfredo

Ingredients: Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, provolone, parmesan, spinach

Nutrition: 160 calories per slice, 5 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar

The Spinach Alfredo is part of Cici’s flatbread line, which has played a huge part in making Cici’s one of the healthiest pizza places to visit. The two other flatbreads are the Chicken Bacon Club and the Honey BBQ Chicken.

Papa John’s

Healthy Pick from Papa John’s: Garden Fresh Pizza with thin crust

Ingredients: Olives, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, Roma tomatoes, mozzarella

Nutrition: 230 calories per slice, 8 grams of protein, 3 grams of sugar

Papa John’s, like other traditionally unhealthy pizza joints, has been making strides to become one of the healthiest pizza places. Now, they offer what they call “Lighter Choices” including the Mediterranean Veggie, Hawaiian Chicken, Tropical Luau, and Chicken and Veggie.

Marco’s

Healthy Pick from Marco’s: Hawaiian Chicken Pizza

Ingredients: Ham, chicken, bacon, pineapple, three-cheese blend, Marco’s sauce

Nutrition: 230 calories per slice, 14 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugar

The Hawaiian Chicken Pizza from Marco’s might have slightly fewer calories per slice than other options from the healthiest pizza places, but the majority of those calories are from protein, so it’s a fair trade-off.

Papa Murphy’s

Healthy Pick from Papa Murphy’s: Herb Chicken Meditteranean

Ingredients: Mozzarella, garlic, chicken, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, herbs

Nutrition: 220 calories per slice, 12 grams of protein, 3 grams of sugar

Papa Murphy’s was made famous for being one of the healthiest pizza places, but also for being the biggest “Take ‘N Bake” restaurant, meaning customers come into the store, order the pizza, and take it home and bake it at their own convenience. You can create your own pizza or order one of the signature recipes, but if you want to ensure the pizza you take home is as healthy as can be, it’s best to select the ingredients yourself.

Tips When Ordering From the Healthiest Pizza Places:

The healthiest pizza places can only do so much for your diet. Your choices would still determine how “healthy” they actually are for you. Here are some tips for when you order your next pizza box or meal from your pizza place of choice – wherever it may be:

  • Try to eat no more than two slices a day. This way, you can stay under 500 calories from your pizza consumption. Think of it as a treat instead of a diet cheat. Thinking of it as a cheat day item would make you crave for it more!
  • Stick to thin crust offers. A thick crust pizza may immediately add 300 calories for two slices while thin crust pizzas would only have around 150-200 calories for two slices.
  • Choose your toppings well. Stick to veggie pizzas which have wholesome toppings like spinach, mushrooms, olives, green and red bell peppers, or pineapples. If you can, request for less ham on your ham and pineapple pizza.
  • Know your cheeses. One big trick would be to choose less cheesy-topped pizzas and go for the more tomato-based ones. Less cheese would mean fewer calories, but when you can, try asking for cheddar instead of mozzarella cheese because it has a 1 /3 of usual mozzarella pizza calorie-content.
  • Go for personal sizes. These are smaller and you can enjoy the thought of having a “whole” pizza for yourself when you decide to order this. To make this even better, go for a thin-crust personal pizza and enjoy the same pizza goodness without too much bulk.
  • Balance it out with the drink you choose. Instead of going full out on your pizza dinner treat, cut back on the calories by having juice with it instead. Pineapple or orange juice can make great pizza accompaniments especially if you already ordered a veggie-based pizza.

Low calorie fare, menu nutrition information, and great taste make for big success for Papa Murphy’s

The “Take and bake” pizza business has been very, very good to pizza chain Papa Murphys. Just this year the Nation’s Restaurant News identified Papa Murphy’s as one of the fastest growing franchise in the US.
While Papa Murphy’s remains the only chain of the top 5 to offer the take and bake option for buying pizza, it has been an early adopter to another profitable ventures: transparency in ingredients, full menu nutritional information, and creation of the lower calorie pizza.

This pizza chain that doesn’t even have ovens was just named best in America

Papa Murphy’s A chain where business is all about moms was just named the best pizza restaurant in America.

Papa Murphy’s ranks as America’s favorite pizza chain, according to Market Force Information’s annual quick-service-restaurant study.

This is the third year in a row that Papa Murphy’s has snagged the top spot — despite the fact that its sales are nowhere near Papa John’s, Domino’s, or Pizza Hut’s.

Unlike the biggest names in the pizza business, Papa Murphy’s doesn’t sell pizza piping hot and ready to be eaten.

Instead, the pies are never baked — the restaurants don’t even have ovens or freezers. Customers buy a raw pie, to be baked at home.

Papa Murphy’s

Papa Murphy’s has more than 1,500 locations in 38 states, as well as restaurants in Canada and the United Arab Emirates, making it the fifth-largest pizza chain in the US. It is by far the largest take-and-bake pizza chain in the country — the nearest competitor, Figaro’s Pizza, has fewer than 50 locations.

While chains like Domino’s or Papa John’s appeal to younger, mostly male customers who are hungry for delivery pizza, Papa Murphy’s is focused on marketing to families, something that pays off when it comes to finding loyal customers.

In addition to being named the No. 1 pizza chain by Market Force, Consumer Reports and Nation’s Restaurant News have also ranked Papa Murphy’s as the top pizza-restaurant chain in the US.

Papa Murphy’s is so good! One just opened up down the street from us. I’m going to pop this bad boy in the oven and gorge in about 15 minutes. Also, we are watching the Documentary Making A Murderer on NETFLIX. It’s sooooo good. #papamurphys #netflix #netflixandchill

“Young males are not loyal. So a young male typically will love you today, and then when the next pizza place says they can charge nine bucks for that versus 10, they’ll go for that,” CEO Ken Calwell told Entrepreneur.com. “Moms are hard to get, but moms are really loyal.”

Papa Murphys

In an effort to appeal to families, Papa Murphy’s markets its pizzas as healthier options than the delivery-centric competition. The chain has lower-calorie options on the “Gourmet Delite” menu, cutting calories by serving up pizzas with thin crusts.

Papa Murphys

On the other side of the calorie spectrum is Papa Murphy’s “stuffed” menu, with sandwich-esque pizzas like Chicken Bacon Stuffed, with one layer of creamy garlic sauce, chicken, bacon, tomatoes, and mixed onions topped with another layer of tomatoes, bacon, provolone, and cheddar.

The menu is completely customizable. The “Create Your Own” platform lets customers pick their own dough, sauce, and toppings combinations.

Another much-loved aspect of the menu is the dessert selection, especially the chocolate-chip cookie dough and the S’Mores Pizza, which is a (cheese-less) pizza covered with chocolate chips and marsh mellows.

Papa Murphy’s heritage draws from two take-and-bake pizza chains: Papa Aldo’s Pizza, founded in 1981, and Murphy’s Pizza, founded in 1984. In 1995, the two chains merged, forming Papa Murphy’s.

While the majority of the company’s locations are on the West Coast, the chain is currently making a major expansion push. Recently, Papa Murphy’s announced plans to open 15 locations in Hawaii, with the first restaurant opening later this year.

Listen, there’s nothing like ordering delivery pizza, but by the time it gets to you it can totally be cold. Which is not really OK, considering we’ve already decide to blow hundreds of extra cals by ordering it in the first place. Thankfully, we’ve got Papa Murphy’s to help with that — the chain’s signature “Take ‘N’ Bake” plan gives you the delivery taste you crave, but uncooked (yet not frozen!) — and you get to bake it to perfection (at 425 degrees, to be exact) from the comfort of your own oven. But Papa Murphy and co. knew they had a new market to cater to: healthy eaters, like us. Thankfully, they did with the introduction of their take-and-bake deLITE pizzas. Skinny pizza #FTW!

The secret to the LITE part of these pizzas? A thin crust. These pizzas actually pack 25 percent less fat and 35 percent fewer cals than their signature pies. And since they use a perfectly thin crust, which has 25% less fat and 35% fewer calories than their signature pizzas. Enjoy two slices with a quarter of their garden salad tub for a dinner to have a well-rounded meal that clocks in at around 450 calories. Here are some of the pies you can grab and go:

  • Herb Chicken Mediterranean deLITE: This flavorful, made-before-your-eyes pizza features olive oil, garlic, Papa Murphy’s own Herb Chicken, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and feta, plus a sizeable amount of zesty herbs, too.
  • Veggie deLITE: Although it’s made with creamy garlic sauce and finished with diced tomatoes, spinach and mushrooms, I always ask for added olives, bell peppers and onion for the perfect veggie-packed, tasty meatless pizza option.
  • Chicken Bacon Artichoke deLITE: A pie with bacon that still qualifies as diet? Heck yes! At less than 200 calories per slice, this pizza is topped with creamy garlic sauce, chicken, bacon, artichokes, spinach, parmesan and herbs. Yum.

Papa Murphys Nutrition

As far as Papa Murphys nutrition goes, is there any reason to believe that their take and bake pizza has less fat and calories than the kind delivered hot to your door?

So how does Domino’s stack up to Pizza Hut and Papa John’s in terms of fat and calories? Let’s take a closer look at a few of the more popular pizza flavors and find out.

(note: all nutritional information has been taken from Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa John’s and Papa Murphy’s websites. Is it accurate? We don’t know, we just assume they tell the truth.)

Cheese Pizza
Serving Size = 1 slice from a 14″ (large) pie, thin crust

Papa Murphys falls right in line with the rest of the gang in terms of fat and calories with it’s cheese pizza on the original crust. If you go with the deLITE® pizza, you’ll get a break on the fat and calories. The deLITE® crust is thin and crispy and geared to those watching their waistline.

Next we took each of the pizza restaurants “supreme-type” pizza which comes with a couple different meats and veggies (toppings may vary on each pizza). All include cheese and hand tossed or original crust.

Supreme Pizza (or similar)
Serving size = 1 slice from 14″ (large) pizza, original crust

Papa Murphys is up there near Pizza Hut in terms of fat and calories. Our theory of take and bake pizza having less fat and calories is looking to be wrong.

Okay, let’s look at one more…the classic Pepperoni and Cheese pizza.

Pepperoni & Cheese Pizza
Serving size = 1 slice from 14″ (large) pizza, original crust

It looks like take and bake pizza isn’t going to save you on fat and calories just because you bake it yourself. Sorry to disappoint! Papa Murphys nutrition is again right up there with the rest…and again a little high on the saturated fat.

Doesn’t stop us here at CompletelyPizza.com’s HQ from diving in to a Papa Murphy’s stuffed crust pizza from time to time.

Everything in moderation, right?
