Alyson Stoner Talked About Her Eating Disorder Recovery & How It’s Related To Other Mental Illnesses

On Feb. 13, actor and singer Alyson Stoner opened up about seeking treatment for an eating disorder and how being a child star impacted her health in an interview with PEOPLE. Stoner is known as the pig-tailed dancing kid in Missy Elliot’s “Work It” music video and acting roles like Cheaper by the Dozen, Step Up, and the Disney original movie Camp Rock, PEOPLE reports. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Stoner said working non-stop and becoming famous at such an early age affected her emotional and physical wellbeing, and she started developing health problems as early as six years old, including severe anxiety that caused heart palpitations, hair loss, and seizures. “As a kid, I learned to make fire out of fumes,” Stoner told PEOPLE. “It’s all I knew.”

Stoner told PEOPLE that she also experienced trust issues, difficulty socializing with others her age, and a “terrifying fear of failure.” Stoner says the mounting pressure led her to experience anorexia nervosa, exercise bulimia, and binge-eating disorder, according to PEOPLE. While in treatment for eating disorders, says PEOPLE, Stoner was also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) tendencies, and alexithymia, a condition in which people have difficulty identifying and describing their feelings, according to a 2017 study published in Frontiers in Psychology.

You might think Stoner’s situation is not the norm because she’s a celebrity who faced an extreme amount of pressure and stress. But experiencing an eating disorder along with other mental illnesses is actually pretty common. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), mood and anxiety disorders frequently co-occur with eating disorders, but co-occurrence of mental illness with eating disorders is rarely talked about. Some of the mental health diagnoses that commonly can co-occur with an eating disorder include anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD, says NEDA, and those diagnoses can happen at any time — before symptoms of the eating disorder begins, after, or even during. It’s worth noting that eating disorder is itself considered a kind of mental illness, according to NEDA.

In a national survey of women with eating disorders, NEDA found that 94 percent of women had a co-occurring mood disorder and 92 percent had a co-occurring depressive disorder. The survey also found that there is a “markedly elevated risk for obsessive-compulsive disorder among those with eating disorders,” according to NEDA, with 69 percent of respondents with anorexia nervosa also experiencing OCD and 33 percent of respondents with bulimia also experiencing OCD.

Eating disorders are often so closely tied with OCD because both can cause intrusive and compulsive actions intended to relieve the anxiety of the person experiencing them, according to Walden Behavioral Care. But it can sometimes be difficult to diagnose whether the disorders overlap or are mutually exclusive from each other, says Walden Behavioral Care, which affects the treatment path. Either way, it’s important to talk about how eating disorders and mental health aren’t always mutually exclusive.

Stoner communicated the pain her career was causing through her relationship with food and its connection to her mental health. “Some people are complimentary of me when it comes to maybe not acting out in ways that they see other child stars behaving,” Stoner told PEOPLE. “I was acting out, but I chose vices that were societally acceptable and praiseworthy.”

Conversations like these are so vital to creating greater awareness of how eating disorders and other mental illness are often so closely connected. After all, education and awareness are the foundation for better treatment options for those who might share similar experiences as Stoner.

Disney Alum Alyson Stoner Says She Was Diagnosed With Alexithymia, an Emotion Processing Dysfunction

Actress Alyson Stoner, perhaps best known for her roles in “Cheaper by the Dozen” and for being a co-host on Disney Channel’s “Mike’s Super Short Show,” opened up to People magazine about struggling with her mental health growing up.

Stoner shared she struggled with anxiety due to the pressure of childhood stardom, as well as eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, exercise bulimia and binge-eating disorder. She said though it didn’t seem like she was “acting out” like other child stars have been known to, she actually was.

“Some people are complimentary of me when it comes to maybe not acting out in ways that they see other child stars behaving,” she said. “I was acting out, but I chose vices that were societally acceptable and praiseworthy.”

Though much of the interview focused on Stoner’s struggle with disordered eating and her time in treatment, the article mentioned she had also been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive tendencies and alexithymia.

Alexithymia isn’t an official diagnosis recognized in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), but is a term used to describe when you have difficulty identifying your emotions. According to The Journal of Neuropsychiatry, psychiatrist Peter Sifneos coined the term to describe patients who struggled to engage in some types of psychotherapy.

According to Dr. Deborah Serani, Psy.D., who specializes in treating depression, folks with alexithymia simply can’t put words to their feelings — even if they want to. She said some of the typical signs of alexithyma include difficulty identifying and expressing your feelings, limited understanding of what causes feelings and trouble recognizing facial cues in others. It’s associated with a variety of mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and schizophrenia.

Struggling to identify emotions is not confined to just people who live with alexithymia. Feeling, identifying and expressing emotions is something most people struggle with at some point in their lives.

The Mighty’s editorial director of contributors, Sarah Schuster, knows what it’s like to struggle with emotions. In her piece, “The ‘Emotion Chart’ My Therapist Gave Me That I Didn’t Know I Needed,” she explained why emotions are hard sometimes, and shared the tool her therapist gave her to help identify them. She wrote:

My therapist isn’t big on worksheets or homework, so I was surprised when after one session, she excused herself to get something for me. What she handed me was a piece of paper I didn’t know I needed: a Wheel of Emotions. It’s a simple chart, with different levels of color-coded emotions, meant to help those who possess it identify how they’re feeling. I stared at it, and was hooked.

Now, Stoner said she has been focusing on her mental health and well-being. She told People she even shaved her hair off as “an act of mental health and confidence, not self-destruction.” She continued:

I can’t tell you how many beliefs and opinions and insecurities fell to the floor with every tuft of hair, and I’m leaving them there. I’m shedding one era and rising as a new being in real time.

Do you also struggle to feel or identify emotions? You’re not alone. to join the conversation and connect with others who have been there.

Why Alyson Stoner Shared This Photo Despite the Fear of Nasty Comments

Growing up in the spotlight isn’t easy-and if anyone knows that, it’s dancer, musician, and former Disney star Alyson Stoner. The 25-year-old, who was once part of the Step Up movie series, recently took to Instagram to share just how often she’s trolled for her appearance. It happens so often that she almost didn’t share a photo of herself in fear of the hateful comments she might receive.

“I almost didn’t post this because the flat-chested, little boy comments really miss the point of celebrating how perfect and wonderful every body size and shape are,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself in a sequined cream dress. “It’s not news that wardrobe, angles, and natural shifts in weight can transform appearance instantly. But still, so many people cling to representing and defending one status quo.” (Related: Kayla Itsines Perfectly Explains Why Wanting What Others Have Will Never Make You Happy)

Stoner continued by encouraging other women to embrace the skin they’re in. “I think the magic begins when you start accepting yourself in every phase, not getting too attached to an image, but letting an appreciation for the magnificence of your body guide decisions in self-care,” she wrote. While the road wasn’t easy, Stoner revealed that practicing self-acceptance helped her through eating disorders, depression, and anxiety-which is why she refuses to let body-shaming trolls affect her anymore. “When I see this photo, I see hard-earned confidence and ease,” she wrote. “I hope you do, too, but I can’t control you. Ultimately, it’s your loss if you live in a one-size-fits-all world.” Preach.

Disney Channel and Step Up Star Alyson Stoner Details ‘Traumatizing Experiences’ of Hollywood

From her standout dance in Missy Elliott‘s “Work It” video to parts in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Cheaper By the Dozen and the Step Up franchise, Alyson Stoner had a pretty busy childhood — nabbing roles in high-profile projects since the early 2000s.

But nearly 50 films and animated voiceover roles later, the former Disney channel star admits fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

“Being famous as a kid is weird and unhealthy,” Stoner, now 24, revealed in a candid YouTube video posted in August — which she said she made in an effort to prevent fans from asking “the same questions” while also showing them “where heading and what creating now.”

“I was a pack mule growing up,” she said. “Living in that little box? Being part of that little machine? It takes a huge toll on you.”

“The competition, narcissism, perfectionism, the pressure, schedule, the traumatizing experiences that we can never talk about, because we’re either under contract or we’ll get shot or other things will happen to us if we open our mouths,” she said, adding: “No, I’m not in the Illuminati.”

While Stoner didn’t give specific examples, she said years and years of living “a lot of different lives in a short amount of years” had left her “sick and tired of telling other people’s stories.”

“I’m done waiting, hoping that the politics are going to change,” said Stoner, who also has a successful singing and touring career.

“I want to be able to show you who I am, not giving a damn about whether it matches what you wanted me to be building a true community of people where we can talk about s— that matters,” she said.

The Los Angeles-based actress said the choice leaves her looking at life “with a whole new lens.”

“In my generation we sort of let the art speak for itself. We don’t disclose our personal private lives. But I’m embracing it,” Stoner said of her YouTube page. “I see a lot of really great potential from having this kind of connection.”

“I have some really cool bucket list projects and dreams that are coming true right now,” she added. “ finally tapping into a life that I want to live.”

Stoner was just 14 when she graduated high school and took a couple of years off before trying her hand at college, even studying neuroscience on the side.

In addition to her work on the stage and screen, the brunette beauty also focused on humanitarian work — traveling the world teaching sustainability and ways for families to get out of poverty.

Alyson Stoner is a famous American Singer, dancer, model, and actress. She is so talented even at this young age. She has acted in many movies, the most noticeable are cheaper by the dozen, The suite life of Zack and Cody, the step up series and much more. You could notice her as a dancer in Eminem, Missy Elliot, Wil Smith and many others’ album.

It is unfortunate that this pretty young actress is the recent victim of the plastic surgery rumors. So, we are here with the clarification and justification whether she had or hadn’t done a plastic surgery procedure. Well, it’s not wrong to have a plastic surgery procedure. It’s their wish, anyone can have plastic surgery treatment nowadays. Although the actress denied the plastic surgery allegations, we are a little bit confused with respect to her present look, which does not look familiar to her earlier looks.

When you compare her pictures taken years back with the recent look, you could find a change in her nose region, which is why we suspect that she might have had a nose job.

Alyson Stoner Nose Job

When you see her photos taken years back, you can see a wider and bigger nose. When you observe her recent photographs, you cannot find a wider nose, instead, you can see a slimmer and pointed nose. It appears so perfect to her. And there are talks that her nose is crafted like an art. We agree on it though. Her nose job is one of the finest job done ever and should have been done by someone who is an extremely skilled top surgeon. Looking at the images, you wouldn’t question whether she had plastic surgery or not.

Though the actress has not revealed anything regarding the plastic surgery allegations, we cannot be cent percent sure that she has undergone plastic surgery ailments. But from the pictures and her recent look we can very well find the difference in her face. Though she is an all-rounder in cine field, she might have felt to have a perfect face and nose, maybe the reason she has gone for plastic surgery.

Alyson Stoner gained fame from Disney and dancing. But she’s moved from ‘flashy choreography’ to intellectual fare with her YouTube channel and new podcast.

  • Alyson Stoner got her start as a dancer in Missy Elliott’s “Work It” music video when she was seven, and also claimed a spot among the 2000s Disney Channel stars and blockbuster actors early in her career.
  • Recently, she’s focused on her direct digital audience and intellectual drive with a YouTube channel and new podcast, “Simplexity.”
  • Stoner said she sees “Simplexity” as way to feed her curiosity about the world and encourage her fans to engage in society and culture through interviews with experts in a variety of fields.

If you’re a hip-hop fan, you might know Alyson Stoner from her performance in Missy Elliott’s 2002 “Work It” music video when she was seven.

Now, the multi-hyphenate actor and dancer is stretching into the world of podcasting.

In her new show, “Simplexity,” which launched Nov. 11, Stoner aims to understand some of the most pressing issues facing today’s global society through interviews with guests from world-renowned business women to hip-hop experts.

After 15 years in the entertainment industry, Stoner said she was ready to share a more intellectual side of herself with her fans.

She started that process by building her YouTube channel, which has more than 600,000 subscribers. Stoner’s early YouTube videos are primarily dance routines and choreography tutorials, but she said she always planned on using the channel to showcase her less well-known passions as well.

“The Catch-22 of having a previous public identity is that unless you want to shock your audience with a reinvention … you often have to satisfy the appetite of your followers’ expectations first,” Stoner told Business Insider.

But about two years ago, Stoner shifted her content to focus more on vlogging and tackling meaningful projects. For instance, she took a trip to Ethiopia to work for nonprofit I Pour Life’s economic empowerment program with other YouTubers and influencers like Alisha Marie.

Stoner sets out to ‘spark curiosity’ with new podcast

Having established herself with an online audience, Stoner moved into the audio-only space with “Simplexity,” further emphasizing intellectual ideas over showmanship.

“For most of my career, my intellectual ability has been hidden behind flashy choreography,” Stoner said.

Stoner works with an external team to source ads for the show, but has the freedom to approve the ads she reads.

“I created the strictest parameters possible for potential sponsors and try to favor sites and services that center education, productivity, health and self-care, and giving back,” Stoner said. These sponsorships help fund internal and backend expenses, Stoner said, and while she hopes to continue to grow the “Simplexity” brand, she’s not concerned with turning a profit from the podcast.

In podcasting, Stoner said she found the right platform to foster long, in-depth discussions with experts about various aspects of society and culture in a way that’s not over-produced or edited.

For example, the first episode features Mariéme Jamme, a Senegalese technologist who was born into poverty, sex trafficked, and is now teaching women and girls to code. Jamme shares her expertise on Africa’s role in the tech race, but also chats with Stoner about empowerment in general.

“You will learn about this expert’s field, but it’s through storytelling and experience of the universal human process,” Stoner said. The wide-ranging podcast has no overt theme besides the desire to “spark curiosity” in the audience with important issues, Stoner said.

In future episodes, Stoner plans to interview marine biologists, SpaceX employees, authors, and hinted that she would have have guests from her “previous career milestones.”
