Sometimes simple is best. If you only want a pedometer that simply and accurately counts steps and calories burned then you do not need to buy a fancy pedometer watch.

All you need is something you can slide into a pocket or clip to your shirt.

The Omron series of pedometers are generally the highest quality of the lower end of the pedometer price curve for the pedometer market.

Omron pedometers are fully functional. They are built to last and will generally give you all the information you need from a pedometer.

The “non” Omron pedometers all have great reviews, solid functionality and get the job done when it comes to tracking your daily steps.

The only thing these inexpensive pedometers “lack” is all the extra bells and whistles other pedometer watches give. Bells and whistles you probably already have on your mobile phone, if we are being 100% honest.

Most of the items on this list are multi-functional. They are pedometers and…. something more. But Omron pedometers (and their competitors) are simple, What you see is what you get. You don’t pay for features you don’t want. If all you want is something simple to count steps one of these options will be perfect for you.

The Omron is a highly accurate pedometer that gives you step counts, time, distance, and in most models: calories/fat grams burned. If you want to keep things simple, this pedometer does them really well.

Many of the less expensive pedometers fail because they are spring-activated. They may be fairly accurate for large movement swings, so they work well for running, but they fail to accurately track steps when it comes to walking.

The Omron Altiva Pocket Pedometers have Tri-Axis technology which makes making this pedometer accurate no matter what position it’s in, and therefore highly accurate in tracking steps and distance.

(Note: All of the items on this list use accelerometers for that reason: they are much more accurate.)

This simple, but accurate pedometer has the advantage of its simplicity, the small size and relatively low cost. Of the inexpensive models of pedometer the Omron Alvita HJ325 gets my vote for best pedometer.

It is my opinion that Fitbit makes the most reliable, accurate and cool pedometers around. They don’t have a version that can really “compete” with the price of the least expensive options above, although the Fitbit Zip comes close.

They have all the flavors of activity trackers that you could desire. They have watches, bands, clip-on pedometers, and tiny activity trackers. They are also great for the multi-tasker since, in conjunction with the Fitbit app, they do quite a bit more than just count steps.

It is my opinion that the “best” Fitbit is also the newest model released. The Fitbit Charge 3.

The Charge 3 pedometer has almost all the bells and whistles of the fancier “pedometer watches” in the Fitbit lineup but at a far lower cost.

The Ionic gives you a complete tool for measuring and tracking your daily fitness. Heart rate, steps, sleep tracking, calories burned, floors climbed, swim tracking and much more. Then it gives you multiple views and full real-time breakdown of the stats of your choice. It even has an option for personalized workouts straight from your watch.

It also has many features you can expect from any Smartwatch on the market. It stores and plays over 300 songs. It features a number of really cool watch faces. It has a large watch screen with a colorful LED display that has some great resolution.

The Fitbit Ionic has great support for tons of apps. From full integration with many workout apps to music services like Pandora.

The downside of this Fitbit Tracker is the cost. It is on the higher end of Fitbit options. (But it is still less expensive than an Apple watch or many other Android watches.)

Besides its focus on being a complete fitness tool, the Fitbit Ionic is way ahead of the other SmartWatch options in one very important way. Its battery life.

I hate the idea of having to constantly charge a watch. They should be ready to go with you as you go about your day. With a battery life of days rather than hours, The Ionic is simply the best option for this currently (2020) on the market.

This makes the Fitbit Ionic the best fitness tracker watch available. If you can afford a fitness watch that has everything, I highly recommend this one.

Its tracking accuracy encompasses all metrics, especially active minutes, steps, and distance – the whole idea behind a pedometer. What’s more, Fitbit Zip is incredibly easy to use and set up, and its companion app is something to call home about. Its UI is amazing, allowing you to set/customize your fitness goals, check data, and sync it to your PC via Bluetooth.

On the overall, Fitbit Zip is a compact, lightweight, accurate, and versatile pedometer that you can clip anywhere on your body. It easily offers all-day tracking, much like Omron Heartguide.

The battery only last nine days, but all the data is saved for a whopping nine months, and since it’s small and unintrusive you shouldn’t really notice that it’s even there.

In most respects the very definition of ‘bog standard fitness band’, the Vivofit 3 excels in one area: shove in a standard watch battery and it lasts for a year.

That aside it counts steps adequately, and attempts to detect exercise, Fitbit style, but does so fairly inadequately. It logs steps, sleep and ‘intensity minutes’, although again, the Vivofit’s concept of ‘intensity’ may not quite chime with yours.

For those who are allergic to charging, this could be a decent choice. Personally, I wouldn’t wear something that ugly for 12 minutes, never mind 12 months. There are some replacement ‘designer’ straps available for it but seriously, they’re beyond hideous.

A lot of these fitness bands are great at telling you what you’re doing wrong, but not how to improve. Moov Now isn’t satisfied with that.

With a six-month battery life from a standard watch battery, waterproofing to 30m and a choice of wrist and ankle straps, Moov Now is a very interesting and potentially brilliant device.

The lightweight, reasonably attractive band syncs with an app which takes you through runs, actually telling you when to slow down, lengthen your stride or speed up.

It’ll also track and, to greater and lesser degrees, coach you through swimming, cycling, running, cardio boxing and seven-minute HIIT workouts.

When we say coaching varies, it really does. Cardio boxing is almost like Guitar Hero but with punching, with lots of voice input. Seven-minute interval workouts do encourage you to “feel the burn”, but cyclists just get vague tips on cadence, and inaccurate data on RPM and power.

Moov Now also handles day-to-day step and sleep tracking and is very reasonably priced.

There are two quibbles here, though: the app is still quite basic, and fundamentally, we question both the accuracy and usefulness of some of the coaching advice. When it’s good, however, it’s very good.

Although the Jawbone UP3, the big brother to this, is packed with sensors including a tri-axis accelerometer, bioimpedance sensors, plus skin and ambient temperature sensors and a heart-rate monitor that uses electrical sensors rather than light-based ones, we actually prefer this one, which is lacking the bio sensors and only has movement-based ones.

That’s because both Jawbones’ crowning glory is a very friendly, easy-to-use app which tells you next to nothing of any use. So why bother getting a more complicated band to use with it?

The Jawbone app shows you how your daily stepping and sleeping are improving (or deteriorating), letting you challenge other users to “duels” and offering reasonably helpful health tips and more context to the data than most tracker apps (although sadly, that’s not saying a lot)

This is a pure “lifestyle” tracker, designed to be worn 24/7. There’s no display, so you’ll have to check your stats on the iOS or Android apps, but the band is light and discreet enough to just put on and forget about it (unless you go swimming – the Jawbone UP2 is okay in the shower, but not waterproof). Battery is also good at around 10 days.

On the other hand, we know from experience that these have a habit of malfunctioning, and in terms of improving fitness, as opposed to taking the first ‘steps’ towards it, Jawbones are a bit of a non-starter.

At the current price it’s currently going for, however, it’s a decent deal.
