Oscar Nod for ‘Walk the Line’

Witherspoon furthered her success with commercial films like Sweet Home Alabama (2002), while also performing in indie fare and providing voiceover work for animation projects. She earned critical acclaim in 2005, when she appeared as country singer June Carter, opposite Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, in the biopic Walk the Line. The film proved to be both a critical and commercial success, with Witherspoon earning an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance in the film.

While her career was at a high, Witherspoon was also experiencing serious challenges in her personal life. She and Phillippe announced their separation in October 2006 and divorced the following year. In an interview with Charlie Rose in 2014, Witherspoon opened up about the dissolution of their marriage. “I spent a few years just trying to feel better. You know, you can’t really be very creative when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs,” she told Rose. “I was just kind of floundering career-wise ’cause I wasn’t making things I was passionate about; I was just kinda working. It was really clear the audiences weren’t responding to anything I was putting out there.”

In 2007, Witherspoon began working on the film Rendition, also starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The stars began dating shortly afterward, but their romance didn’t last long; the Hollywood “It” couple split in 2009. Witherspoon began dating Hollywood agent Jim Toth shortly after. During this time, she also co-starred in the fantastical comedy Penelope (2008) with Christina Ricci, in addition to serving as a producer on the project. Later that same year, Witherspoon starred with Vince Vaughn in the family holiday comedy Four Christmases. Other big-name film projects were to follow, including voicing the main character in the animated blockbuster Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) and starring in Water for Elephants (2011), with Robert Pattinson.

In 2011, Witherspoon also tied the knot with Toth. The couple welcomed son Tennessee James Toth in the fall of 2012. New mom Witherspoon kept busy, promoting her romantic comedy This Means War (2012) with Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, and the drama Mud (2012) with Matthew McConaughey. She also began working on the true-crime tale Devil’s Knot (2013), co-starring Colin Firth and Stephen Moyer.

‘Wild’ Acclaim

In 2012, Witherspoon launched a production company called Pacific Standard, which was behind the 2014 films Gone Girl and Wild. The latter, based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed, stars Witherspoon as a woman who takes to the road after the death of her mother. Witherspoon earned rave reviews for the role, receiving Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG award nominations.

In 2015, Witherspoon starred with Sofia Vergara in the comedy Hot Pursuit, but the film turned out to be a box office dud. She also launched a Southern-inspired home and apparel line called Draper James that year. Witherspoon returned to voicing an animated character in the 2016 musical hit Sing, in which she played a pig with musical dreams.

‘Big Little Lies’

In 2017, Witherspoon took on the roles of producer and star of David E. Kelley’s HBO series, Big Little Lies, which featured such talents as Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern. The series garnered significant attention at the Primetime Emmys, including an outstanding lead actress nomination for Witherspoon, prompting speculation that the storyline would continue. Season 2 premiered in June 2019, with Meryl Streep now part of the star-studded cast.

‘A Wrinkle In Time’ and ‘The Morning Show’

In early 2018, Witherspoon appeared alongside Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling in an adaptation of the acclaimed science-fiction novel A Wrinkle In Time. Later that year, it was revealed that she was preparing to reprise the role of Elle Woods for Legally Blonde 3, with much of the creative team from the original hit movie also in talks to join the project.

Witherspoon then teamed up with Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell on The Morning Show, an original program on the Apple TV+ streaming service, beginning in November 2019.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon, in full Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon, (born March 22, 1976, New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.), American actress who appeared in a wide range of genres but was perhaps best known for her romantic comedies, in which she often portrayed charming yet determined characters.

Witherspoon’s father was a U.S. Air Force doctor, and the family lived in West Germany for several years before moving to Nashville, Tennessee. As a child, she worked as a model and appeared in commercials. In 1991 she made her big-screen debut, portraying a tomboy in The Man in the Moon. That coming-of-age drama was critically acclaimed, and Witherspoon garnered accolades for her performance. Other roles followed, including a supporting role on the television miniseries Return to Lonesome Dove (1993), before she took a break from acting to briefly attend Stanford University in 1994–95. Resuming her career, she appeared in such notable films as the dark crime comedy Freeway (1996), which was inspired by the Grimm’s fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood”; Pleasantville (1998), a comedy centring on teenaged siblings in the 1990s who become trapped in a 1950s TV sitcom; and Cruel Intentions (1999), a modern take on the 18th-century novel Dangerous Liaisons, set in high school. The latter film costarred Ryan Phillippe, to whom she was married from 1999 to 2008.

In 1999 Witherspoon earned rave reviews for her portrayal of Tracy Flick, an overly ambitious high-school student running for class president, in Alexander Payne’s black comedy Election. The following year she was cast against type as the girlfriend of a serial killer (played by Christian Bale) in the violent satire American Psycho, an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial novel. Also in 2000 Witherspoon had a memorable turn as the sister of Jennifer Aniston’s character on the popular television series Friends, and she provided a voice on the animated series King of the Hill.

Returning to the big screen, Witherspoon had her first major box-office hit with Legally Blonde (2001), a romantic comedy in which she played Elle Woods, a spoiled sorority girl who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School; she reprised the role for the 2003 sequel. During that time she also appeared in the hugely popular comedy Sweet Home Alabama (2002) and in several adaptations, notably The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), which was based on the play by Oscar Wilde.

Witherspoon turned to more serious fare with Walk the Line (2005), an acclaimed biopic of country singer Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix). For the role of June Carter, she learned to sing and to play the autoharp, and her commitment to the part helped Witherspoon win an Academy Award for best actress. She then appeared in a series of romantic comedies, including the box-office hit Four Christmases (2008) and the less-seen How Do You Know (2010) and This Means War (2012). In 2011 she starred in the Depression-era drama Water for Elephants, portraying a performer in a traveling circus who is caught in a love triangle (Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz). Better received was Mud (2012), in which she had a supporting role as the girlfriend of a troubled loner (Matthew McConaughey) who befriends two boys.

Continuing with dramatic roles, Witherspoon appeared in The Good Lie (2014) as a job recruiter who helps Sudanese refugees who have relocated to the United States and in Wild (2014) as a woman who hikes the Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to overcome the effects of a series of tragedies. The latter film was adapted from the memoir by Cheryl Strayed, the rights to which Witherspoon had purchased through her production company. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for best actress.

In Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice (2014), adapted from the comic crime noir by Thomas Pynchon, she played the love interest of a private investigator (Joaquin Phoenix). The farcical Hot Pursuit (2015) featured Witherspoon as a straight-laced police officer who must protect the widow of a criminal. She later supplied the voice of a pig who enters a singing contest in the animated film Sing (2016). In 2017 she starred as an overachieving mother in the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies, adapted from Liane Moriarty’s best-selling novel. Later that year Witherspoon appeared in the romantic comedy Home Again. She played the role of Mrs. Whatsit in the 2018 film adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s acclaimed 1962 sci-fi novel, A Wrinkle in Time. In 2019 Witherspoon reprised her role in Big Little Lies for a second season. Later that year The Morning Show, a series on Apple TV+, made its debut. It featured Witherspoon as a news reporter and also starred Aniston and Steve Carell.

Witherspoon’s first book, Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits (2018), is a cheery primer on Southern etiquette, cooking, and beauty.

Reese Witherspoon – Biography

Horoscope : Capricorn
In reality, the stunning actress is a great deal more sophisticated than the characters she often plays. Her on-screen personas have tended to be, well, not plagued by ideas. But the real Reese comes from a family of accomplished professionals and had intended to follow in her family’s academic tradition until she was distracted by Hollywood.
Born in Louisiana on March 22, 1976, Reese was studying at Stanford University in California when the movie industry came calling. Offered a part in the movie Twilight, she says she simply couldn’t refuse the opportunity to work with Paul Newman and Susan Sarandon made the offer irresistible.
“Clearly I’m crazy,” she says. “Nobody in their right mind would do that!” Her parents, a respected surgeon and a professor of paediatric nursing, were concerned when she decided to abandon her education to work on the film, but the gamble paid off. What had been a hobby became a full-time job as her performance in the film led to a series of other offers. “Twilight begat the next film, Pleasantville, and that begat Election and, well – here I am.”
Her 2002 blockbuster Sweet Home Alabama grossed $125 million in the US alone, putting her in a position to write her own cheque when producers called on her to sign up for Legally Blonde II the following year.
And it wasn’t just professional success that came from her move into cinema. She also met actor Ryan Phillippe who would become her husband and father of daughter Ava and son Deacon. However, in November 2006 the couple announced they were divorcing.
Despite the stresses of their divorce, it seems that Hollywood hasn’t put a dent in the old-fashioned values Reese grew up with in the deep south. The petite star says the hyper-stylish, image-obsessed world of cinema is not a natural environment for her: “I grew up in Tennessee. We didn’t know what Louis Vuitton was,” she admits. “I had to order all my prom outfits out of catalogues.”
Nor had she heard of Robert De Niro or Martin Scorcese when she set off to audition for the film Cape Fear. Unfortunately, a passenger sitting next to her on the plane told her all about the two cinema giants, making her so nervous she bungled the reading. As a result she lost out on the role to Juliette Lewis.
Although she remained unperturbed by her failure on that particular occasion, Reese has her sensitivities and reveals mixed feelings about not having completed college. “I sometimes feel quite insecure because I didn’t finish my education,” she says. “I feel intimidated when I meet people who are very knowledgeable and learned.” A refreshing admission from “Hollywood’s most bankable woman”; but one thing’s for sure Reese is a long, long way from your average college drop-out.

So many people these days are reliving the legendary film Legally Blonde: Ariana Grande honored the movie in her video of “Thank U Next,” and Kim Kardashian West paid homage to Elle Woods with an epic Halloween costume. But Reese Witherspoon is still the best Elle Woods there is—especially because Witherspoon recently revealed she even has the iconic wardrobe to back up her performance. She shared that, after Legally Blonde 2 wrapped, she got to keep the clothes from the set, including all 77 (!) pairs of shoes that Woods wears in the movie.

Appearing on The Graham Norton Show this week, Witherspoon admitted that she currently has all of the footwear from Legally Blonde 2 casually lying around in her closet. “How many pairs of Jimmy Choos?” host Graham Norton asked her. The actress, who was sitting next to a shocked Jennifer Anniston, responded it was “like 77.” She added, “I had it written in my contract…I have all of them.”

Even though she has all of them, she hasn’t been putting too many Elle Woods outfits together lately. She explained, “I’ve never touched them , and then on the 15th anniversary I took them all out of storage and tried them all on. Some of them fit, some of them didn’t, and then I showed them all to my daughter and it was really cool.”

Witherspoon has confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 is on its way, which means we’re going to have another chance to see some more brilliantly pink Elle costumes. Maybe a few pairs of the shoes Witherspoon has will make an appearance in the latest installment; we have a few favorites we wouldn’t mind seeing again, including the bright red boots, the fuzzy slippers, and the glittering sandals that she paired with her Jackie O–inspired outfit.
