What are Right Size Smoothies?

The Right Size is a company that is marketing a weight loss product in shake form which joins the pantheon of other similar shake diet products such as SlimFast and Nature’s Way.

So what is the Right Size Smoothie? Well according to the product description on the Amazon sales page: “Right Size is a delicious, hunger smashing weight loss smoothie packed with protein, fiber, and over 20 essential vitamins and minerals that keep your body nourished. It conveniently replaces breakfast and lunch and staves off hunger with its unique combination of protein and fiber keeping you full for hours.”

Each container contains approximately 20 servings. The other issue is to find out where to purchase this product. Amazon lists the Right Size Smoothie as “unavailable.” The only commonplace we could find it was on eBay of all places. Prices there range from $89.97 up to $139.99 with free shipping. These prices seem much higher than what it may have been advertised. One review site noted that it was once offered at $55 for a container of 30 servings. It makes one wonder what happened between then and now.

It also seems that at one time, Right Size offered ready-to-drink 8-oz size bottles. However, we could not find this product version available anywhere we looked.

We completed a review of the product, and from our analysis, we found there are a variety of flavors of smoothies, including Lean Cocoa Bean, SkinniVanilli, Leano Cappuccino, and Slend-A-Berry.

How Did Right Size Smoothies Start?

According to the Facebook page of Right Size, the company began in 2002 and is currently based in Lake Zurich, IL. A search found that the company is listed as Right Size Health and Nutrition, LLC. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gives the company an NR rating and the business is not BBB accredited. The website listed on the BBB page goes to a domain name that is no longer active and is for sale. However, we did find a simple WordPress site for the product.

The mission of the company is also listed on their Facebook page, and it highlights how their product addresses a standard issue for many Americans. As stated on their page:

“Hectic lifestyles tend to make healthy choices wait. Right Size Weight Loss Smoothies fixes this problem. Even if you have only a few minutes to eat, you’ll have enough time to shake up one of our smoothies. Simply replace your current breakfast and lunch with our easy-to-make smoothies, and you can expect to lose up to 18 lbs. in 12 weeks.”

Claims

Well, we highlighted one claim which we pulled straight from the company’s Facebook page. But we also checked their website and found this short statement:

“Not a bodybuilder? Enjoy a protein smoothie anyway! Our bodies need protein for healthy skin, hair, bones, and heart. Plus a protein-packed breakfast can prevent overeating, and a dose of protein after resistance training helps build and repair muscle tissue (especially when you consume a blend of proteins).”

From what little is being currently advertised on the site and other places, the claims from the company do not seem unique or overly extravagant – beyond what we found on their Facebook page and their basic website.

Ingredients

Right Size Smoothies Ingredients

There is quite a list of ingredients with the usual scientific sounding names to make up a smoothie concoction. For full disclosure, they are all listed below (at least for the lean cocoa bean flavor version):

• Resistant maltodextrin (Soluble dietary fiber)
• Cocoa (Processed with alkali)

At the bottom of the list is a further notation that the product does contain milk and soy.

One thing to note is that the product previously advertised and emphasized an ingredient called “Appemine” which is a combination of ingredients such as Green tea extract and cinnamon. However, it appears to be a made-up word. The company appears to have removed Appemine from Right Size Smoothies, although some of the ingredients in Appemine are still present in the ingredients list.

Does Right Size Smoothies Work?

Well, the verdict from our review does not seem to indicate a ringing endorsement for this product.

Even on the company’s Facebook page, it indicates at the asterisks below the Mission statement that “Results not typical. Weight loss was achieved by replacing two meals a day with Right Size Weight Loss Smoothies while following a reduced-calorie diet.” So can it work? Possibly, but mainly in combination with other actions by the consumer.

However, some positive reviews were found on the Amazon sales page (even if the product is unavailable there). The average reviews indicated a 4.1 out of 5 stars for the product which isn’t bad.

But does Right Size Smoothies work? Well, it seems to depend on how one uses it in conjunction with other activities. One site review appeared to explain it like this:

The top ingredient on the list of the product ingredients is soy protein isolate. According to Environmental Health Perspectives, one study has shown that “soy provides a complete source of dietary protein, meaning that, unlike most plant proteins, it contains all the essential amino acids” even though “Americans as a whole still consume very little soy protein.”

The second primary listed ingredient is Crystalline fructose. This seems to be a favorite substitute for sugar and provides a sweet flavor for the product.

The third primary ingredient that is listed and we will discuss briefly is the Resistant maltodextrin. This is essentially a form of dietary fiber. According to the European Journal of Nutrition, in one study conducted, it was shown that Resistant maltodextrin did help in colonic function.

One area that seems uniform in the review of the product is the positive feedback on its taste. That could be one of the not so minor factors that allow consumers to imbibe this smoothie instead of eating a regular meal.

Benefits & Results

We’ve discussed some of the advertised benefits and supposed results. In the past, the company may have run into some difficulty in regards to some of the benefits it advertised.

We did find several YouTube testimonials about the effectiveness of Right Size Smoothie and one from 2013 highlighting the supposed benefits of it in a health infomercial.

In 2011, the company was approached by the Electronic Retailing Self-Regulating (ERSP) program challenging some of the claims made on their website and Facebook page at the time. After some discussions and requests for supporting documentation, the ERSP decided that Right Size “can support certain performance claims” but that they had also “voluntarily discontinued certain claims made at Facebook and in consumer testimonials.”

Details on Right Size Smoothie and Weight Loss

Well, it seems that the feedback is mixed on results of Right Size Smoothie as a weight loss supplement. However, the details on how it works are reasonably clear. The product is not designed to work alone and requires a commitment to proper diet and exercise to be potentially useful.

In one YouTube testimonial, a woman describes her experiences with Right Size Smoothie. For her, it was a clear success, but she emphasizes the need to change one’s diet and to add moderate exercise to one’s regime for the product to enable one to lose weight – otherwise, it won’t work for you.

How to Use (Take) Right Size Smoothie

Right Size Smoothie is designed to replace two daily meals. The directions say that one should add one serving of the powder to a glass of milk or water, shake, and drink up. It also recommends you follow it with another 8 oz glass of water. The container also indicates that one should also “enjoy two 100-calorie snacks” and to “eat one sensible meal.”

Of course, it requires that one also change one’s diet and exercise regularly. Otherwise, the results may not be as advertised.

Side Effects

Potential Right Size Smoothie Side Effects

Well, there could be risks if one does not follow the directions correctly for use. Replacing two meals with a weight loss drink and over-exercising or under exercising could have some negative consequences.

There are some concerns about some of the individual ingredients used in the smoothie. One site went into some detail about these particular elements.

The first major ingredient item is soy. “RightSize diet shake uses soy as protein. While the unimpressive 7 grams offered in a serving isn’t much, consuming soy for protein is still not advisable. Due to demand, soybeans have become one of the most highly genetically modified crops also highly contaminated by pesticides.

Maltodextrin is listed as the third ingredient in Right Size. This substance is a food additive made from grain starches, most commonly corn, according to the Food and Drug Administration. It’s used to stabilize, sweeten, and thicken packaged foods. While it is highly processed, maltodextrin is still a naturally derived additive.

In small amounts, maltodextrin isn’t necessarily harmful. What’s bothersome about its use in Right Size is the fact that it’s listed as the third ingredient, meaning it’s found in a relatively high quantity in the food.

Crystalline Fructose is used to sweeten Right Size. This sweetener is derived from corn and has such concentrated sweetness it can add flavor with fewer calories, thus making it attractive to companies producing products marketed to the health-conscious.

Canola Oil is made from a genetically modified version of the Rapeseed plant.

Often touted as a “healthy oil,” it does have low amounts of saturated fats and high amounts of unsaturated fats (the good kind of fats), including Omega 3 fatty acids, according to the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. But, industrial production of canola oil utilizes processing methods that include dangerous chemical washes and exposure to heat that oxidizes the oil. One study also found up to 4.2% trans fat in canola oil.

The artificial flavors listed on the label are strange chemical mixtures that imitate a natural food flavor.

Silicon Dioxide is a compound used in food to prevent caking. A variety of products incorporate it, from drugs to supplements to printer toners to cosmetics to insecticides.

Although Environmental Science and Pollution International categorized Silicon Dioxide in Toxicity Category III, the FDA considers it to be safe based on the fact that most people will consume a small enough amount they will never experience a negative impact on their health. However, the fact remains that silicon dioxide in significant quantities is harmful.

Acesulfame Potassium (also known as acesulfame K) is an artificial sweetener. 200 times sweeter than table sugar, acesulfame potassium is not metabolized or stored in the body. Ones you consume it, your body absorbs but then excretes it unchanged.”

While the description for some of these ingredients is essential to note, it does appear that if one does not overindulge consuming large quantities of this product, it may not be of great concern. But as always, if you feel some concern, one should consult with your physician before consuming this product.

As far as we can see, there are no specific product warnings associated with Right Size Smoothie. On the container though, it does have in fine print at the bottom to “consult your doctor before starting any weight loss program.” Smart advice to use for any weight loss product.

Lawsuits

Any Right Size Smoothie Lawsuits?

There do not appear to be any lawsuits involving Right Size Smoothies. However, there have been complaints made concerning the customer service of the company mainly surrounding being charged automatically after the free-trial period.

Even though it appears that the free trial period is no longer being offered by the company, it is something to note about the entity that is providing the product. Hopefully, customer service issues have changed for the better. It does appear that the company itself has gone through some transition but whether this is a positive or negative outcome, only time will tell.

Right Size Smoothie Alternatives

After reading this review and you are beginning to feel very skeptical of Right Size’s Smoothie as a product choice, you may not be alone. Just the fact that the company appears to have changed websites and that the only site we have found to be able to buy the product is on eBay, with an average price that is much higher than what it used to be advertised at, does not give a consumer a “warm fuzzy” feeling.

If you are looking for an alternative to Right Size Smoothie, there are certainly several alternative smoothie type drinks if that is your preference. There are other long-running meal replacement products, such as SlimFast. But one idea could be to create your smoothies from all natural ingredients that one can at least verify the source. According to Current Research in Nutrition and Food Science, smoothies may play a positive role in a healthy diet when utilized correctly.

However, in general, the efficacy of most diet supplements is questionable. In the Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences, you should consult your physician before trying any weight loss supplement.

Finally, one must consider that if one chooses to take this product and uses it correctly and responsibly, and one achieves their weight loss goals, it is important to remember that this product is not a complete meal replacement for long-term use. It should never be considered part of a sustainment plan for keeping off the weight once you achieve your goals. There can be no real substitute for maintaining a proper diet of authentic food to keep one fit and in shape.

The Bottom Line – Do Right Size Smoothies Work?

So, are Right Size Smoothies Weight Loss Shakes the best around? We were initially excited to review this one because it appeared like the shake may be a promising way to reach your weight-loss goals, but we’re not sold on suggesting this one to dieters because the clinical proof is just not there. Plus, we are concerned about customer complaints that claim it doesn’t work.

Recently, I had the opportunity to hear a commercial for Right Size and became curious if things had changed since I last reviewed them. Where’s The Appemine?

When I originally reviewed Right Size, the marketing at the time was touting the weight loss power of an ingredient called “Appemine.” This was actually a made up word that was composed of the following ingredients:

  • Resistant maltodextrin (soluble fiber)
  • Guarana seed extract
  • Green tea extract
  • Ginger root extract
  • Cinnamon bark extract
  • Cayenne pepper

In the list notice “resistant maltodextrin.” Another name for this ingredient is “Fibersol.” Its a man made fiber that we cant digest (so we cant get calories from it). This ingredient is in many weight loss shakes Ive looked at including:

  • 310 Shake
  • 18 Shake
  • Zeal Shake
  • NutriSystem Shakes

If you saw my original Right Size Smoothies review you may have noticed that the ingredients in Appemine look a bit different than are listed here. The ingredients I listed above are what I recently saw on older Right Size Smoothie container at a local drug store. This makes me wonder if the ingredients in Appemine were altered/ adjusted since my first review?

In any event it may not matter, because Appemine is no longer listed in the ingredients of newer looking containers or the product website. It appears they removed Appemine from Right Size Smoothies although some of the ingredients in Appemine are still present in the ingredients list. Why they removed it, I can’t say.

For this review, I looked at the ingredients in Skinni Vanilli flavorr. The Nutrition Facts label for container I looked at contained 20 servings. One serving of SkinniVanilli (29 g, about 1 ounce) contains the following nutrition values:

What Are The Sweeteners ?

The label indicates that Right Size Smoothies contains (in order as they appear on the label) the following sweeteners:

  • Crystalline fructose
  • Corn syrup
  • Acesulfame potassium (also known as Acesulfame K)
  • Sucralose (Splenda)

How Much Protein?

As can be seen from the table above, if you mix Right Size Smoothies with milk, it has 15 grams of protein. However, alone, the shake mix only has 7 grams of protein. By itself, I don’t feel that’s a lot of protein for someone on a weight loss plan-especially if you don’t eat enough protein at other meals or snacks. As such, I don’t think people should mix Right Size with water. I feel milk is a better choice.

People should eat a bit extra protein when they are trying to lose weight. This is to try to reduce muscle loss during dieting. Adding extra protein to meals (as well as exercising) can help reduce this loss.

Does Right Size Contain Soy?

Yes, the label indicates that Right Size Smoothies contains both milk and soy.

Does Right Size Contain Dairy?

The product website states that Right Size Smoothies contains casein, which is a protein found in milk, so yes, the product does contain some dairy.

Is It Kosher?

Yes, Right Size Smoothies are both Kosher and gluten free.

How Much Caffeine?

According to the product website, each of the 4 different flavors of Right Size Smoothies have the following amounts of caffeine:

  • Lean Cocoa Bean: 22.2 mg caffeine
  • Slend-A-Berry: 3.3 mg caffeine
  • Leano Cappuccino: 60 mg caffeine

The website does say that this is less caffeine than is in a cup of coffee.

Who Makes Right Size Smoothies?

According to the product website – MyRightSize.com – the company is Right Size Health & Nutrition Corporation. They are located at 750 Oakwood Road, Lake Zurich, IL 60047-1519. Interestingly, when I searched for this address online, I noticed that it is also the same address for a company called Insight Beverages.

The linkedin profile for Insight Beverages states that: “The company manufactures and distributes cappuccino, hot chocolate, frozen cappuccino, barista products, fruit smoothies, frozen granita, tea products and iced coffee.”

Therefore, I believe that Insight Beverages is the company that actually makes Right Size Smoothies – as well as many other products.

Right Size Smoothies Research

The product website does list a clinical trial done on Right Size Smoothies and even lets people download the entire study to read. The study was published in 2012 and is titled Meal Replacement Beverage Twice a Day in Overweight and Obese Adults (MDRC2012-001). I read the study and noticed a few things that I thought were worth mentioning:

  • The study lasted 12 weeks and involved 55 overweight men and women (the average age was 40).
  • Twice a day, people were instructed to mix Right Size Smoothies with 8 oz of water, milk or other liquid– AND to follow that up by drinking 8 oz of water. This drinking extra water after the shake should be performed for those looking to duplicate the results of this study. It does mention this on the product label too.
  • The people in the study were also placed on a calorie restricted diet that reduced their calories by 500 per day. In other words, Right Size Smoothies was used in addition to a lower than usual calorie intake.
  • The people were also given questionnaires to fill out about how full they felt etc. as well as food diaries and beverage logs to keep track of what they ate and drank.

Study Results:

At the end of the study, it was reported that:

  • People lost between 10 and 13 pounds after the study. The most successful dieters lost as much as 18 pounds.
  • Decreases in body mass index (BMI) were also reported.
  • People felt fuller 2 hours after consuming Right Size Smoothies.

Possible Weaknesses Of The Study

  • There was no placebo to compare the effects of Right Size Smoothie to. This lack of a placebo group could reduce the significance of the study.
  • Everyone in the study replaced 2 meals a day with a Right Size Smoothie in addition to their weight loss diet. In other words, people did not just drink the shakes. They did other things too including filing out questioners and writing down what they ate and drank. Because of this, we can’t know how much of an impact these other things had on the weight loss results.
  • A total of 55 people were in the study however, only 28 completed the study. That’s an almost 50% drop out. This says a lot about how hard weight loss is, even with this “Hunger Smashing Smoothie.”
  • People dropped out for a variety of reasons including being bored, scheduling conflicts, and inability to track their progress with the questioners and logs they were supposed to fill out. A minority of people dropped out because of side effects such as nausea and diarrhea.

Overall this is an interesting study but I think this investigation should be followed up with a placebo controlled study.

Right Size Smoothies Side Effects

I’m not aware of any side effects from using the product. When I searched online, I did not see anyone saying crazy, out of the ordinary, side effects. I think if you are basically healthy, Right Size Smoothies is safe.

When I looked at Amazon reviews of the product I saw one person who noted gaining weight after adding adding fruit to the shake. Fruit is healthy but my guess is that this weight gain is likely because the fruit added additional calories to what they required to lower weight. This is something to keep in mind. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how many calories we eat.

Keeping tabs of calories using apps like MyFitnessPal or the software that came with your FitBit tracker, can help reduce the chances of weight gain happening. I’ve found the Fit Bit software to be particularly good in this respect.

Does It Raise Metabolism?

Anytime you eat, your metabolism goes up a little bit (and then goes down again). That’s because it takes energy to digest food. The caffeine in the shakes might also slightly bump up metabolism too, but I don’t think this will play a significant role in weight loss.

As we lose weight, our metabolism naturally tends to go down. This is because as we get smaller, we don’t use as much energy to keep us going. While exercise can help this to a degree, I wonder how much of an impact this has in terms of the “Big picture.” I recommend not worrying about how to raise metabolism and focus on calories eaten and healthy exercise and nutrition.

RightSize Vs IdealShape?

IdealShape is another weight loss shake that people ask about. Here is my review of the IdealSpape for those who wanted to know how it compared to Right Size Smoothie.

Does Right Size Work?

I believe that Right Size Smoothies work in a similar way to other meal replacement shakes. They get people to eat fewer calories. If people follow the directions on the product – drink 2 shakes a day, each followed by two 8 oz glasses of water, and 2 low calorie snacks and a sensible meal for dinner, and follow the instructions to the letter, I’m pretty sure they will lose weight. But, that’s only because people ate fewer calories. If the shakes are a vehicle to help people do this, then that’s great. Because the shake mix alone is relatively low in protein, I think making sure you get protein at other meals is something to strive for.

How To Make Weight Loss Smoothies at Home

What do you need for delicious, filling weight loss smoothies? You will need all of the ingredients the recipe calls for and a way to blend the ingredients together. If you already have a blender, you are all set.

When making a weight loss smoothie at home, we always use our NutriBullet because it works so well.

Eating all of these healthier foods is a great choice, but it can also be expensive. We have some great tips to help you keep your grocery budget in check once you start making these super weight loss recipes regularly.

Do make it a point, though, to make your smoothies per the recipe instructions to be sure that you are actually making healthy fruit and vegetable smoothie recipes for weight loss, instead of what may as well be high-calorie fruit-flavored desserts.

It really doesn’t take much to throw off the macros of these recipes and get too much sugar (which typically means weight gain, among other negative side effects) or simply end up with nutritional deficiencies over time, which comes with its own host of problems.

In general, you’ll want to follow these guidelines:

  • Keep your finished serving size around 8-10 oz for a thicker smoothie (those cute, tiny mason jar glasses you always see in smoothie pictures ARE on purpose and not just for looks – they’re the perfect size for portioning out your smoothie!). If your smoothie is far more water-based, you might be able to get away with a 16-oz smoothie depending on the exact ingredients. This will keep your calorie levels under control, and also help make you’re not getting too much of any vitamins in your drink, which believe it or not can cause problems for your health.
  • Assuming you’re following a healthy diet outside of eating smoothies and you’re aiming for 5 servings of fruits and 5 servings of veggies per day, then limit yourself to no more than 2 servings of fruit per smoothie serving. The reason for this is to avoid a “sugar-rush” from too much fruit in one sitting (which can cause your insulin to spike), as well as let your body take it’s time to absorb as much goodness as it can, without your system being “rushed” to digest so much as once.
  • Sugar is sweet. Therefore super sweet smoothies are, sorry to say, too sugary to be as healthy as possible. You can split your finished smoothie in half and water it down to help reduce your sugar intake (although you do likely lose some nutritional value this way), and definitely make a note to add fewer sugary foods and sweeteners next time. Replace sweetened milk with unsweetened, avoid adding things like honey, and try to pair a high-sugar-content fruit with a low-sugar-content fruit instead.
  • Keep the protein levels to a reasonable amount (by making a point following recipes). Unless you’ve been specifically advised by a professional, licensed nutritionist to eat an insane amount of protein for some reason, there is such a thing as too much protein, both at once and in a day.
