She finds that it’s the slow controlled movements of Pilates which enable her to stay toned without bulking up. She has also become an aficionado of Vinyasa Flow yoga which involves intense cardio and strength-building exercises as well as some core work to increase strength and flexibility as well as some acrobatic elements.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Gained 55 Lbs. During Her Pregnancy: ‘I Let the Reins Go’
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley gained more weight that she expected during her pregnancy — 55 lbs. — and found the weight loss process “very humbling.”
The model and designer, 32, said her pregnancy with son Jack, 2, was “an intense journey” during an interview with Ashley Graham — who is expecting her first child in the next few months — on her podcast Pretty Big Deal.
“Listen, I enjoyed myself. I let the reins go,” Huntington-Whiteley said. “It’s a new experience, so you’re kind of like, well, let’s see how this goes. And six months in I was like, ‘WHAT! This is crazy!’ ”
Huntington-Whiteley, who welcomed Jack in June 2017 with fiancé Jason Statham, said she struggled at first to accept her changing body, but “basically walked around naked for the last month at home.”
“So by the end I just felt really empowered in my body, but it took a minute to get there,” she said.
And after giving birth, the weight didn’t come off easily.
“I would look in the mirror and I was like, I have 35-40 lbs. to lose,” she said. “And I go to the gym, go to the gym, go to the gym, it’s not falling off, it’s not coming off, and it was very humbling for me, because having had a certain body type for most of my life … I will say working out in the gym and looking back at myself and feeling like s—, I was like, now I understand how hard it is for some people to get to the gym.”
Huntington-Whiteley started to feel guilty about the times pre-pregnancy when she would talk about her workout routine and tell people to just work out three times a week to look like her.
“I cannot tell people how to feel about their bodies, because everybody has a different experience,” she realized.

Around seven months after giving birth, Huntington-Whiteley was doing a photoshoot for her swimwear line and paparazzi photos appeared online, which led to intense criticism about her body.
“I was kind of taken aback by some of the comments that people had … and the narrative around how women are supposed to look,” she said. “It was just shocking to see someone write, ‘Another Body Ruined After a Baby.’ I was like, what the f—. Sure, I haven’t bounced back, it’s 7 months later, but like… I was quiet for a couple days but you get on, it makes you stronger.”

Huntington-Whiteley said that she got back to her pre-baby weight about a year after giving birth, but by then, her mindset had changed.
“Everybody’s body is different, everyone is on their own journey, and I really want every mother to really focus on herself but also the time with her child and it’ll come, it’ll happen, and everybody gets back to a place where they feel good again, if not better. Because I feel better, and I feel a different respect for my body than I did before,” she said.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley gave birth to her son Jack two years ago, but she just opened up about how the whole experience of having a baby made her view her body differently.
The model revealed on Ashley Graham’s Pretty Big Deal podcast that she gained 55 pounds during her pregnancy.
“Listen, I enjoyed myself. I let the reins go,” Huntington-Whiteley said. “It’s a new experience, so you’re kind of like, well, let’s see how this goes. And six months in I was like, ‘What?! This is crazy!’”
The mother of one admitted that she initially found it challenging to accept how her body changed during pregnancy. Eventually, though, she made peace with the changes — she said she “basically walked around naked” in the month before she gave birth.
Ultimately, Huntington-Whiteley said she felt “really empowered in my body” even though “it took a minute to get there.”
It wasn’t easy for her to lose the weight afterward, though. Huntington-Whiteley said she wanted to lose “35 to 40 pounds,” but she struggled to actually lose the weight, despite multiple trips to the gym.
Huntington-Whiteley said she was “in good shape” before her pregnancy and “never felt fitter,” which made the whole experience especially difficult.
“It was very humbling for me,” she said.
Huntington-Whiteley eventually lost the weight about a year after having her son, and she said she wants other women to know it can take time.
“Everybody’s body is different, everyone is on their own journey, and I really want every mother to really focus on herself but also the time with her child,” she said. “It’ll come, it’ll happen.”
Pregnancy comes with plenty of bodily changes, and it’s common for women to feel a little uneasy about them, says Michael Cackovic, M.D., an OB/GYN at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
It helps to focus on the big picture. “I tell patients that this is for the baby right now,” Dr. Cackovic says. “Just be comfortable in what’s going on right now and understand that you can get back to your pre-pregnancy shape after you have the baby.”
Keep in mind that the recommended weight gain during pregnancy varies by body type. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), underweight women should aim to gain between 28 and 40 pounds during pregnancy, normal weight women should strive for 25 to 35 pounds, overweight women should try to gain 15 to 25 pounds and obese women should aim for 11 to 20 pounds.
“Overall, everyone should gain a little weight because of the baby and the increase in fluid during pregnancy,” says Christine Greves, M.D., a board-certified OB/GYN at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies.
If you’ve gained more weight than is recommended, don’t panic — it happens. “Just do your best,” Dr. Greves says. “And if you’re concerned, talk to your doctor.”

“I read this book a few years ago called You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty! and it really changed a lot for me. It’s a doctor talking about the importance of making sure we drink enough water and the benefits of drinking two to three liters of water of day, and if we don’t drink that much we are incredibly dehydrated and that’s often what leads to anything from bad skin, to being sick, and things like that. I started doing that and noticed the benefits immediately, certainly with my skin, my well being and energy levels. I drink a lot water when I am at home.”
On her exercise obsession
“Body By Simone. Simone De La Rue who’s the founder and creator of Body By Simone, I’ve been working out with her for about three years and it’s just completely changed my body. Everything is derived from dance, cardio and pilates, it’s a really upbeat, fun, high energy workout. All of the teachers are professionals dancers and they do the whole workout alongside with you which is really fun. There’s really no talking, no break, the music is blasting and you are going to sweat a lot, but it just feels so incredible when you are done. The environment is really pro female and upbeat, and I can’t speak highly enough about it.”
On the importance of breakfast
“I make a smoothie pretty much every morning at home, it’s often my breakfast if I’m on the go. Normally I’ll put a frozen banana, frozen strawberries–basically any berries–a little bit of almond milk, a spoonful of butter, some flax oil, ice and a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt to get my probiotics and that’s basically it. And I do love a green juice as well.”
“I read a lot. I wouldn’t say I’ve ever really read any book twice expect this one book called The Four Agreements. It’s a spirituality book, but it’s really beautifully written and it’s just a great book when you’re kind of feeling you need a little bit of guidance in your life.”
On her mother’s confidence-building advice
“Always to enhance what you have, not to hide what you have. And I think what she meant by that when I was younger, was really focus on your favorite features, enhance those attributes that you have first as opposed to worrying about the things you don’t like and I’ve always liked that idea. And her other great piece of advice is the importance of staying true to yourself. That’s always been important to me especially in this industry.”

What does your typical daily health routine look like?
As soon as I wake up, I try and drink a litre of water. I often find that after a night’s sleep you’re dehydrated, and it’s a really easy thing to get everything moving the way it should be. Breakfast is also really important to set me up for the day. I need proper food in the morning so I usually have boiled or scrambled eggs with spinach and a green juice.
How do you maintain a healthy balance with your diet and exercise?
It’s hard, because I’m travelling a lot and I don’t have a routine to my life, so I’m often eating out or ordering room service. When I’m at home I try and cook very clean, very basic foods. When I’m out I’ll enjoy myself, but there are ways to make healthy choices – there’s always fish and chicken and salad. If I have a lingerie shoot or a red-carpet event coming up, I might cut out carbs, watch my salt and sugar intake and drink even more water for a few days before.
What do you do when you need an instant pick-me-up?
Go to the gym. I come to London once a month, it’s a massive journey from LA and I’m always exhausted when I get here. Luckily, my brother is a personal trainer so he comes over to my hotel and makes me train with him. You should always try and listen to your body – often, when I am really tired and I go and train hard, I’ll pull a muscle, so now I try and make sure I just do some yoga and some stretching.
What’s your secret to getting a perfectly toned stomach?
I have to really work on my stomach. I’ve found Pilates great because it’s slow and controlled and you really have to think about the muscles you’re working. I’ve also been doing Body by Simone, which is a high-powered dance class, and that also focuses a lot on the stomach. I drink a lot of water too. I always find that when I’ve not been drinking enough, I get more bloated. It sounds counter-productive but drinking more water will actually get rid of the water retention. Probiotics are great for keeping things moving as well, I throw them in a smoothie or take them in pill form.

When you’re short on time, what exercises do you like to do?
Skipping is a really good way to get the heart rate up immediately, I’m always out of breath within two minutes. Everything’s on YouTube now, too! You can go on there and type in ‘exercise for 10 minutes’ and see what comes up.
What is the best beauty tip anyone has ever given you?
Look after your skin. There’s no point putting on loads of make-up if you’re not investing in healthy skin so it’s really about working out which products work for you. It can take time and trial and error and, believe me, I’ve been through it all. I’m very loyal to a product from IS Clinical called Active Serum which has changed my skin, and my aesthetician in LA, Shani Darden, has a fantastic retinal cream called Resurface, which is great for fine lines and dark circles and gives you that even skin tone we all want. I also try and wear sun cream everyday on my hands and face.
What tricks have you picked up from hair and make-up experts to use in your everyday life?
The power of contouring is amazing. Many people naturally do it anyway with the way our mums taught us to put on blusher, but there is a skill to it. I’ve been lucky to work with a number of make-up artists who have taught me how to contour my face but there are also some great tutorials on YouTube. Contouring is great because it enhances what we have, so you can highlight your cheekbones, enhance your lips, slim down your nose or open up your eyes.

If you were only allowed to wear one beauty product, what would it be?
Definitely bronzer, I always feel healthiest when my cheeks are flushed.
What is your signature fragrance?
Anything with rose in it. It sounds like a cliché because I’m Rosie, but I’ve always loved anything with the scent of a rose in it. I’m a big fan of Jo Malone Red Roses, I wear that during the day. There’s a scent from Heeley called Hippie Rose that I save or special occasions or date nights. Scent is our strongest sense and it’s incredible how emotive it can be. It plays a big part in my life and I never feel fully dress without perfume.
How do you like to spend your downtime?
I like to hang out at home with my dogs, make some good food, catch up on my reading, go to the beach for a swim or go out with my girlfriends for some cocktails and dancing. I love to spend time with my family when I’m in England so I’ll always try to go down to Devon for a few days. Just being with loved ones and living in the moment and doing fun activities, that’s what’s really important.

“I was kind of taken aback by some of the comments that people had… and the narrative around how women are supposed to look,” said Huntington-Whiteley. “It was just shocking to see someone write, ‘Another Body Ruined After a Baby.’ I was like, what the fuck? Sure, I haven’t bounced back, it’s seven months later, but like…
“I was quiet for a couple days but you get on, it makes you stronger,” she continued. “But really it was more like, really – are we still at a place where we have this pressure of ‘bouncing back’ after a baby?”
Huntington-Whiteley said she had put on 55 pounds during her pregnancy. She gave birth to her son, Jack, in June 2017.
“Listen, I enjoyed myself. I let the reins go,” she told Graham. “It’s a new experience, so you’re kind of like, ‘Well, let’s see how this goes’. And six months in, I was like, ‘What? This is crazy! It was an intense journey. It was so magical to see – towards the end I just walked around naked. So by the end I just felt really empowered in my body, but it took a minute to get there.”
After she’d had her child, she went back to the gym, but having had “a certain body type”, she didn’t find the process easy – and it gave her a newfound understanding and respect for others who don’t enjoy working out.
“I will say working out in the gym and looking back at myself and feeling like shit, I was like, now I understand how hard it is for some people to get to the gym,” she explained.
“I cannot tell people how to feel about their bodies, because everybody has a different experience.”

Except the 15-second, fast-forwarded workout video (shown above) is pretty hard to break down for anyone wanting to try it out at home. So we chatted celebrity trainer, Astrid Swan–who specializes in sculpting A-list bodies–for an expert’s take on Rosie’s routine.
Astrid trains celeb clients like Julianne Hough, contributes workouts to fitness video site CosmoBody, and is a former model herself. Here’s how she says you can recreate Rosie’s workout yourself–at home, or at the gym.
1. Cardio warm up
Start with some light cardio for about five minutes to get warmed up. “This could be a jog, jumping rope, or jumping jacks,” Astrid suggests. “Just get your heart rate up for 3 to 5 minutes. You want your body to be warm to get the most out of the workout and not risk injury.”
2. Kick backs
That weird movement Rosie does on all fours is actually called a kick-back, and it’s great for your butt. Astrid explains how it’s done: “Start on all fours, pull your knee into your chest and flex your foot as you extend the leg back.”
Rosie is using ankle weights in the video, but it’s not necessary if you don’t have them at home, or if it’s too hard. “Instead, just create your own resistance like you are trying to push your leg through mud,” Astrid said. “Remember to hold your leg straight, keeping your abs engaged, and then bend your knee and extend back 20 times to work your hamstring. Repeat on the other side. Do this for a tight and toned, lifted butt.”
3. T planks
The next part in Rosie’s workout video is how she gets those killer abs and toned shoulders. Astrid says it’s simple to copy the move: “While in pushup position, with your legs slightly wider than hip width, open up your body to the side by lifting one arm up to the sky–remembering to keep your hips up–and then return back to pushup position and repeat the other side. Do 20 (10 per side) to tone the shoulders, back and core.” Hello, Rosie abs.

4. Mountain climbers
“Keeping the above pushup position, make sure your shoulders are right over your wrists, pull knees into your chest at a quick base,” Astrid explained. “Really think about crunching your abdominals each time your knee comes forward. You will feel your heart rate go up, your abs will be on fire, and your upper body will be working hard to support you.” She recommends doing 60 climbs, 30 per leg.
5. Cardio and tone
Not everyone has access to the band setup Rosie’s using in the video, but there’s still a way to get in a solid cardio and toning session that will yield the same results. “As many of us do not have access to a band set up like this, I would recommend using light weights, 3-5 lbs, and create your own mini circuit,” Astrid said. She recommend that circuit include: Shoulder press jumping jacks x 20 reps, cross over punches x 20 reps, and upper cuts x 20 reps.
“Your heart rate will be up and your shoulders will be worked,” Astrid promised.
6. Pikes on stability ball
Sure, Rosie makes this move look easy, but Astrid actually warns it’s quite an advanced exercise. “Try it and if it is too much, there are always options. With your hands on the floor, feet on the stability ball, pike your hips up to the ceiling as you draw your belly in, roll the ball up towards your hands and with control return back to starting position. Go for 10-20 reps.”
If that’s too hard or you don’t have a stability ball, she suggests trying this to work your core, arms, and back: “In top plank position, walk your feet forward towards your hand as you draw your hips up to the ceiling, crunch your belly and slowly walk your feet back to starting position. 10-20 reps.”
7. Hamstring curls on stability ball
Want legs like Rosie? Try this: “Lay on your back, feet up on the stability ball, and hands by your hips. Lift hips off of the ground, squeezing your glutes. Without letting your back arch, draw your heels into the ball as you pull it towards your glutes. Slowly return legs back straight, keeping hips up the entire time. Go for 20 reps,” Astrid said.
If you don’t have a stability ball, she suggests putting a towel under your feet and doing the same thing.
8. Bridge roll ups
Astrid recommends repeating this move for 25 reps: “Lay on the floor, bend your knees and extend your hands straight down by your side. Line up your heels with your finger tips. Lift hips up, squeeze and slowly roll back down,” she said.
“Erica and Rosie are using a ball between their knees, which is an extra burn for you inner thighs as well as the back of legs and glutes. If you do not have a soft ball to use, you can roll up a towel and squeeze the towel or do without.”
9. Figure Four Stretch
Now that the hard part is over, you should make a bit of time to warm down and stretch.
Astrid recommends the “figure four stretch” for your legs and butt: “Lay on your back, bend one knee and place foot over opposite knee–and be sure to keep that foot flexed to protect the knee. Reach through the center of the ‘4’ and pull into the chest,” she said.
