I will admit that I enjoyed the Proposal, but I’m not so sure I liked it.

Well that makes sense to me at any rate. So anyway…

There is one scene in this movie that sits in my memory like a stone in my shoe. I just don’t know what to make of it. It’s this one:

Don’t get me wrong, it ain’t no hangin’ matter as far as I’m concerned, but I have to wonder. Didn’t anybody involved in this production question the wisdom of having two women perform other people’s music and dance? First Betty White pretends to carry out a Haida ritual, adopting the stilted speech patterns of native movie characters for the entire scene. Tasked with joining her in the performance, Sandra Bullock ends up channeling Lil Jon and the East Side Boys. So, one of these women engages in faux native spirituality and the other effectively turns in a rap performance. It’s all at least a little appropriative.

It’s also more than a little cringe-worthy.

To me anyway.

I am admittedly prone to cringitude.

It’s a light comedy anyway, so I guess I shouldn’t expect them to take these issues any more seriously than the rest of the subject matter appearing in the movie. Still, I can’t help but shake my head at the apparent cluelessness.

…but then I wonder!

I come back to my original question; didn’t somebody question the wisdom of this scene? Wasn’t somebody aware that it’s more than a little odd to have two white women finding their bliss in the performance of other people’s music, dance, and ceremony. Wasn’t someone on set at least cognizant of the issue?

And then I wonder, what if someone was?

Could that have been the point?

Quite unexpectedly, the spirit of Nathan Poe haunts this scene!

The whole performance is so completely over the top, I find myself wondering if it isn’t an intentional parody of precisely the kind appropriation I’ve been talking about. Which would make it kinda cool after all.

…I still cringe.

I’ve looked around a bit to see if some movie reviewers can shed light on the scene, and I can’t say that I’ve found much. Newspaper Rock comments on the matter pretty directly, but he doesn’t seem to have any extra information on the production itself. The late Roger Ebert seemed perplexed by the scene, particularly insofar as it related to the Alaskan sunrise. Most reviewers seemed to skip the subject altogether. Here is an interesting blog post on the house where they filmed the movie. (I know, that’s a little left of the actual topic here, but it’s just kinda cool.) The Orlando Sentinel quotes Betty White as saying that she had to learn an ‘Eskimo’ song for the film. The Daily News has her explaining that the language was actually Tlingit. I can’t say that any of this sheds much light on the matter, but that’s about enough of this.

Ah well!

Then, lift the right arm and left leg so they are parallel with the floor and hold for three seconds. Return to a plank, then lower chest toward the ground to perform a push-up. Repeat raising opposite arm and leg. Do two sets of 10 reps.

There’s something about Gravity! The action-packed sci-fi flick starring a slim, strong, and sexy Sandra Bullock blasted off a record-breaking $55.6 million at the box office opening weekend, riveting audiences everywhere with its crazy realistic representation of outer space.

Another thing that has audiences buzzing: Bullock’s super-fit bod underneath that space suit! Being in amazing shape was essentially a prerequisite for her role in order to pull off the grueling wirework required to mimic movements in zero gravity. “I pushed my body to the extreme. Strength-wise, I had to know I could do anything asked of me at any given point, so not a day went by that we didn’t train,” the 49-year-old actress said during a news conference at the Venice Film Festival.

To create a realistic portrayal of floating through space, filmmakers created a custom 12-wire rig that was strapped to the actors with a harness, while puppeteers moved their arms and legs via the wires. “Being in a harness on a wire is an amazing amount of core work. You use only the balance of your body to keep yourself straight and upright, so there is a lot of muscle and demand on your body and entire core,” says stunt coordinator Franklin Hanson. “Sandra was in for over an hour at a time without resting. Some of the stunt girls were resting every 20 minutes, but she was up there forever without needing to stop. She’s incredibly athletic.”

So how did the former high school gymnast and cheerleader prepare for the incredibly intense role? There was a whole lot of movin’ and shakin’ involved! Bullock did endless dance training with her go-to fitness guru Simone de la Rue, and it didn’t stop once they started filming. “We had long periods between shots for set-up and lighting, so Sandra would always pop back to her trailer and do dance workouts for an hour or so, a few times a day,” Henson says.

According to Bullock’s stunt doubles Juliette Cheveley and Stephanie Carey, that type of dance training was necessary to portray such an ambitious astronaut character. “Dance is a powerful discipline that requires core strength and greatly improves balance, coordination, suppleness, and finely tones all muscle groups… The dance training in Sandra’s workouts gave her good body control to perform the zero-g work seemingly effortlessly. It helped her add fluidity and reality to the situation,” Cheveley says.

“Because Sandra was so fit, she could hold herself really well in some of the most difficult positions,” Carey adds. “Zero gravity is really not an easy thing to pull off convincingly. The strain would often show in our faces.”

Bullock’s training sessions with De La Rue obviously paid off (No wonder regulars at the Aussie’s New York City studio rave about her high-energy cardio classes!). It costs big bucks for a private sesh with De La Rue, but and get the red-carpet treatment for free.

Sandra Bullock: Conmen are using my name and picture to flog rip-off “miracle” diet pill

Hollywood star Sandra Bullock is furious after her name has been hijacked by conmen to push supposed weight-loss remedies.

Numerous websites are using made-up quotes that claim she uses a range of pills that boast of miraculous results.

The pills are also said to have won Dragons’ Den here in the UK, and its American equivalent, Shark Tank.

“It was the most watched episode in Dragons’ Den history when sisters Anna and Samantha Martin won over the Dragons’ Den panel,” gushes a website for supposed fat-burning weight loss pills costing just £4.95.

“Never before had the judging panel unanimously decided to each invest over a million dollars into a potential company.”

Which raises an obvious question: why would the Dragons invest dollars and not pounds?

Still, the site goes on to claim that a bunch of Hollywood celebrities endorse the product, TrimGenix Garcinia.

“I have a hectic schedule and I don’t have a lot of time to devote to workout routines,” the website quotes actress Sandra Bullock as saying.

“That’s why I love TrimGenix Garcinia! Taking just one per day helps me stay toned and feeling healthy and energetic.”

Trap: The offer comes with strings

The pills are made from a tropical fruit, garcinia cambogia, and besides burning fat they supposedly aid sleep and increase energy.

I’ve no idea if the health claims are true, but I can confidently say that the celebrity endorsements are fake.

“This site is using Sandra Bullock’s name and image without her giving permission,” her spokeswoman said.

“She is not associated in any capacity with this product nor has she ever used it.”

In the States, there are websites claiming TrimGenix won Shark Tank: “$4.95 weight loss pill that naturally burns fat gets biggest deal in Shark Tank history.”

So, did it win Dragons’ Den or Shark Tank? The answer is neither.

The pictures of Anna and Samantha Martin really show two sisters called Shelly Hyde and Kara Haught, who went on Shark Tank to promote a swimwear range.

Their pictures have been used ever since by conmen to promote junk that is nothing to do with them.

“We would love to get them to stop, not sure how though,” they said. “It’s so frustrating.”

Last year, I told how the same pictures were used to flog a skin cream called, among other names, Total Age Repair.

The blurb was identical: “Never before had the judging panel ­unanimously decided to each invest over a million dollars into a potential company”.

The only difference is that back then the sisters were given the names Anna and Samantha Williams, rather than Martin.

The skin cream version of the scam is still active and one of the names it now uses is Le Baleux Moisturiser.

This uses the same picture of the sisters and another fabricated endorsement from Sandra Bullock.

“I have a hectic schedule and I don’t have a lot of time to devote to beauty routines,” she’s quoted.

“That’s why I love Le Baleux Moisturiser! Just a few minutes every night keeps my skin beautiful and wrinkle free.”

And it’s not just Le Baleux, Sandra Bullock’s name is being used without permission for load of similar old beauty and diet baleux, just look at these:

If half these claims were true the actress would be spending so much of her life popping weight-loss pills and smearing cream over her face she’d never have any time for filming.

These products typically use pressure-selling to push free samples. This Tuesday, one garcinia site read: “Free samples are limited. Expires on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.”

What you won’t know unless you find the small print is that you’ll be sent more of the stuff every month, along with a bill.

“I applied for a free trial of Total Age Repair which I received a month or so ago,” one reader has just told me.

“Today I’ve had another jar and a fee of £89.95.”

She received a £44.97 refund after complaining, but has since had another £89.95 deduction from her account without even receiving another jar – which means that so far the “free trial” has cost almost £135.
