Ringer Star Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Total Body Workout
Sarah Michelle Gellar is one feisty, fearless female! The kick-butt TV veteran currently stars in The CW’s newest hit show Ringer, but she’s been wowing us for over a decade with her strong acting skills and buff body to match.
What’s the actress’ secret to keeping camera-ready all the time? In addition to chasing her adorable toddler around (two-year-old Charlotte Grace with husband Freddie Prinze, Jr.), some of her stay-fit secrets include exercising outdoors, Pilates, eating healthy and juicing.
Gellar has also worked with celebrity trainer Phong Tran of Joe’s Gym. Tran, whose expertise is dynamic functional training, worked with the athletic actress three times a week for two years, focusing mainly on Plyometrics.
“Sarah’s body type was perfect, but she just needed to be stronger because she does a lot of her own stunts,” Tran says. “Everything we did had to center around a very strong core, and her abs and back always had to be engaged.”
It’s not surprising Gellar was just as dedicated to Tran’s fitness routine as her acting roles.
“She was always very present in her workouts, always willing to try new moves and give it her best,” Tran says. “She was the perfect client!”
While we may not all be TV stars, we can still look and feel like one! The talented trainer gave us the scoop on how we can get buff arms, lean legs, and a super sexy midsection – just like Gellar. Read on for more!
You’ll Need: Cable rack; floor mat; dumbbells; high pulley with a straight, cambered or V bar; box step.
How it Works: Tran’s total-body workout he created for Gellar focuses on plyometrics to work the core, biceps, triceps, quads, glutes, shoulders, abs, obliques, back, thighs, legs, hamstrings and butt. It consists of seven movements done in a circuit for 60 minutes with no rest.
Begin with a light stretch and then warm-up for 5-15 minutes on a treadmill or elliptical – whatever gets your whole body moving!
STEP 1: Squatting Cable Row
How to do it: Stand facing the cable rack. Grab both stirrups and squat down with your arms straight out in front of you. Now you’ll want to stand up and, as you stand, pull the cable to your ribs. Do this in one fluid motion so that once you’re standing straight up, the stirrups are right against your ribs. Then squat back down and let your arms go straight as you drop down. That’s 1 rep. Complete 10-15 reps.
Muscles this move works: Legs, butt, back, biceps and shoulders.
STEP 2: Push-ups with Side Twist
How to do it: Start in the push-up position. Do a standard push-up, twist your torso to the right and swing your right arm up towards to ceiling, so you are now facing completely to the side. Twist back and lower your body to the ground. Now perform a push-up and twist to the left and raise your left arm. Complete 10 reps on each side.
Muscles this move works: Core, chest, triceps, biceps, shoulders, abs and back.
STEP 3: Full Sit-ups with Twist
How to do it: Lie with your back flat against the floor, bend your knees and place both feet on floor. Place hands behind ears, gently supporting your head, but not holding or lifting your head up. Push your lower spine flat against the floor. Slowly lift your shoulders off the floor, using the strength of your abdominal muscles. As you lift, imagine you are squeezing your belly button into your spine. Then twist to the left by angling right shoulder and right elbow towards left knee. Squeeze the left oblique muscles in your waist and side as you twist. Repeat again on the opposite side. Complete 10-20 reps.
Muscles this move works: Core, abs and obliques.
STEP 4: Dumbbell Reverse Lunge and Curl
How to do it: Grab a pair of dumbbells and hold them at your sides. Step back about 3 feet with your right leg, simultaneously curling the dumbbells toward your shoulders as you lower your hips until your left knee is bent 90 degrees and your right knee is a few inches from the floor. Push back up and lower the dumbbells. Repeat, stepping back with your left leg. That’s 1 rep. Complete 10-15 reps on each leg.
Muscles this move works: Core, biceps, quads and glutes.
STEP 5: Tricep Pushdowns
How to do it: Stand facing a high pulley with a straight, cambered or V bar. Grip the bar with a palms-down, less than shoulder width grip. Start with the bar at about chin level and your upper arms angled slightly up. Begin the movement by bringing your elbows down in line with your body. When your elbows are pointing down, continue the movement by pushing down and around in a wide arc.
Keep your elbows pinned tightly in to your sides and your wrists straight. Do not let your wrists bend back. Squeeze hard. Let the bar up. Let up your upper arms angle up again until the bar is at chin level. That is 1 rep. Complete 10-20 reps.
Muscles this move works: Core and triceps.
STEP 6: Box Step Ups
How to do it: Set up a box that is approximately knee high and grab a pair of dumbbells. Stand directly in front of the box. With one leg, step onto the box, push off of your heel and lift yourself up. When you reach the top, flex your glutes and hamstrings as hard as possible for at least one second, and then lower the leg slowly. That is 1 rep. Complete 25-30 reps on each leg.
Muscles this move works: Glutes, thighs and hamstrings.
STEP 7: Lat Pulldown with Squat
How to do it: Stand in squatting position, with arms held overhead at full extension, grasping a bar connected to the weight stack. Pull your elbows down and back, lowering the bar to the neck, then return to the initial position. This is 1 rep. Complete 10-20 reps.
Muscles this move works: Core, lats, biceps, rear delts, legs, quads, glutes and butt.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Secrets to a Healthy Life
Mark LiddellOn a soundstage in Los Angeles, Sarah Michelle Gellar, 34, has just finished filming a scene for her new CW show, Ringer. We sit on a couch on set, a well-thumbed script beside her. Still in an olive gown and full makeup, shes ready for her next scene—oh, except for the pair of white Nikes on her feet. Its a perfect illustration of how this working mom (of 2-year-old Charlotte) and wife (of nine years, to Freddie Prinze Jr.) manages both sides of her life.
Much like the twins she plays on TV, she has twin personas: “Im Sarah Michelle Gellar when Im at work,” she says, “and Im Sarah Prinze when Im not.” As the crew sets up the next shot, Sarah talks about her healthy food obsession, why she naps during lunch, and the “weekends off” rule she credits for keeping her happy.
Q: How do you think growing up in New York City affected who you are today?
A: I think, automatically, you look at the world differently if yourefrom a big city. Youre never bored, you dont stay home, youre always on your feet. I think it generates type A personalities.
Q: What are your favorite workouts?
A: I like anything outdoors. But Im just as happy on a treadmill. I love Pilates. I grew up with, and I still have, major scoliosis. Growing up in Manhattan, you had your schoolbag, but we were so trend-conscious, nobody wanted to put a backpack on both shoulders, so almost all the girls I grew up with have it to some degree, because we all were so lopsided. So Pilates not only is a great exercise, but does relieve a lot of discomfort.
Q: How did you keep fit when you were pregnant?
A: Well, I went into labor at the Pilates gym.
Q: Have you changed your workout since you started Ringer?
A: Ha, ha, um, if you count walking from Stage 3 to Stage 16! No. If anything, its downgraded. And I made sure that my body was strong before we started, because these hours are really difficult.
- Next Page: Keeping up confidence
- Q: Do you have a go-to way to lose five pounds?
- A: I dont believe in trying to trick your body into things. I eat healthy, I exercise, I love food—but I dont like junk food. I mean, were women. We go up by five pounds, we lose it, depending on the water, the moon, your cycle, whatever. So I just try to maintain.
Q: You seem so confident. Do you ever have moments of insecurity?
A: Oh God … Im a female! I totally have body dysmorphic disorder. I think most women do. A makeup artist friend once said, “I dont think Ive ever seen you look in a mirror.” Im surrounded by them all the time—you sit in hair and makeup—so I guess I just have this mechanism where I tune it out. So every once in a while, Ill look and Ill be like, “Wait, thats what I look like?” I just have to remember that Im human, and Im a mom. Being a parent changes the vanity at least a little bit. It has to. Your priorities are different.
Q: If you were ever to put a famous womans body on your fridge for inspiration, whose would it be?
A: I would never do that to myself, especially because Im aware of the airbrushing and trainers and food programs. You have to use yourself as inspiration. I think if I were ever going to put something up, I would put a picture of myself where I was proud of my body. But I would rather not look at a picture of myself on my fridge. In fact, we have a nonmagnetic fridge.
Q: What picture would it be?
A: Probably before I got pregnant—I was in really, really good shape. I think when I was doing Buffy I was a little bit thin, actually, because even though I was working out constantly, it was just the time and the age. But I was happy being pregnant, too. Im not as critical as I used to be about my body. And its also funny, too, how women perceive women, and how men perceive women. Because a woman will look at the skinniest person and think thats the most attractive, and a man will not think thats attractive at all!
Q: Everything Im seeing now is about Kate Middleton, like, “Oh my God, shes rail thin.”
A: But it seems like people are worried that shes stressed. I feel like 10 years ago, it would have been like, “Oh, she looks incredible.” Whereas you look at her sister, who has such a fabulously athletic body—I mean, a real athletes body—and I think theres this movement now, where more women, finally, want to look like that.
- Next Page: Learning to prioritize
- Q: How will you raise your daughter so she has a healthy outlook?
- A: Well, weve already taught her to love healthy food. We took her to sushi on Saturday night, and everybody couldnt believe what she inhaled. I think its important at a young age to enjoy different tastes. And we make this green juice for her. Its basically everything but the kitchen sink. We go to the farmers market and buy everything and just put it in the juicer: kale, Swiss chard, carrots, celery. You name it. And now weve all started drinking it, and weve all been healthier.
Q: You drink it in the morning?
A: In the afternoons. And we all get that boost. Messy to clean up, though. Im going to invent a juicer that self-cleans and Im going to retire!
Q: Who gets the job of having to clean it?
A: (Puts head down and jokingly whispers) My husband.
Q: What has been your favorite age?
A: Oh, right now, for sure. A lot of people say how much more relaxed I am, and its because I dont take things as seriously. You know, its not just about work, I have a different priority. And I can let things roll off differently. The only thing that makes me mad is if I lose time with my child.
Q: Is there a way you speed up the quality time with your family?
A: Napping. Thats why I never do anything at lunch, because most of the time I eat before we break for lunch, and I nap during lunch. I dont want to miss the mornings with her, so no matter how late we work, I get up with her. My weekends I refuse to work. Because thats her time. I love this job—its not my first priority anymore.
Q: Whats yourgo-to healthy meal?
A: Sushi, probably. I eat a lot of fish, and its so high in omegas. I do love some halibut sashimi with truffle, I like me some blue crab hand roll. Ooh, Im making myself hungry.
Q: Whats the one thing you put on that makes you feel really good about yourself?
A: Im a New Yorker: T-shirt and blue jeans. My stylist years ago said, “If you have a crisp white shirt and a nice pair of blue jeans, you cant go wrong.”
Q: Do you worry about what youre putting on, and if paparazzi will be taking pictures?
A: If youve seen some of my paparazzi pictures recently, you would knoooooow I dont!
Q: You and your husband have been married for nine years, which is a lifetime in Hollywood, of course. Whats your secret?
A: We communicate.Thats my secret. Its not a secret, but its how I handle all my good relationships, whether theyre male-female or not. If you bottle things up, it explodes on you.
Q: How do you keep from getting too stressed out?
A: Im not saving the world. I have to remember that I like my job, but its work, and its not my life. My life is my family. And I think thats the best thing. You know, take a minute. Its not the end of the world.
Q: If you could paint a picture of you in your happiest place, where are you?
A: Snuggling with my daughter. Doesnt matter where. I could be on a subway. I dont care.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s joke on Instagram about overeating on Thanksgiving has gone over like lumpy gravy to some of her followers.
The former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star posted a throwback shot of her looking thin in an underwear shoot with the caption, “I’m just going to pin these up all over my house as a reminder not to overeat on Thursday. #thanksgivingprep”
Unlike having fun embarrassing her two children or joking for her 16th wedding anniversary, her stab at some Thanksgiving humor didn’t go over well to everyone.
Some felt the caption by Gellar, 41, was in poor taste given the pressure on women to have the perfect body and equating being skinnier with being healthier.
Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.
“Hey @sarahmgellar I freakin love you, but this messaging (esp for young vulnerable girls) is crap,” one commenter wrote. “What about someone who can do both? What about considering your messages through a body-shaming/adding to shitty culture filter before posting? Your body is gorgeous, but so are all bodies – chubby, fat, curves need lifting up, not more demonising.”
“Because women don’t have enough reminders to starve themselves and stress about eating…” another wrote.

“This caption proves once more that diet culture is really everywhere and that so many women have internalized this kind of thinking,” another one chimed in. “It’s really a shame.”
“Is that where you place your value?” another wrote. “On the size of your thighs? Or your protruding hip bones? Nothing positive comes from this post.”
Others saw it as a light-hearted joke, not a body image issue, and came to her defense.
“Not to be offensive (lol) but so many sensitive flowers offended over a completely innocuous and harmless joke. We’ve gone too far people, recognize!!!!” one wrote.
We apologize, this video has expired.

“Can’t believe the grief this has caused,” another replied. “Leave her alone, she looks good and if she wants to pin the picture up for motivation so be it.”
“You are gorgeous and you have the right to post whatever you want,” another said. “I applaud your hard work to look like you do and should be able to joke around. People need to stop caring so much about what you post or say about yourself and focus on themselves.”
Some of Gellar’s friends also chimed in with support. Actress Shannen Doherty replied with fire emojis, while actress Tiffani Thiessen wrote, “Is it weird if I pin these pics of you in my house too?”
Gellar responded to the backlash in an Instagram comment Tuesday afternoon, writing, “It’s come to my attention that some people think I was ‘fat shaming’ with this post. That could not be further from my intentions. I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to myself not to do that.”
She continued, “I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humor. Any one that knows me, knows I would never intentionally ‘shame’ any one on any basis. I am a champion of all people.”

It’s hard to believe Buffy the Vampire Slayer debuted on The WB 20 years ago today. On March 10, 1997, the world was introduced to Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s Buffy Summers, a California teen chosen by fate to battle evil forces with super-human strength, endurance, agility, and healing powers.
During the show’s run (which lasted until 2003), Gellar reportedly performed many of her own stunts, and trained for her action-packed scenes with a combination of martial arts, gymnastics, and kickboxing. Today, the 39-year-old is still in fighting shape—and has the Instagram photos to prove it. Gellar mixes up her workouts with a combination of yoga, TRX, dance-cardio, Pilates reformer, and more.
She can even strike advanced yoga poses—in jeans:
Aerial yoga inversions are no biggie for the former Vampire Slayer, either. She makes inverted lotus look utterly relaxing:

Gellar is also into TRX, which involves using a suspension strap system and your body weight to get the ultimate total-body strength workout. “My new #archnemesis …..the super #villain in my life…#trx It may take me some time, but I will conquer and defeat you too!! (well once I can walk again)” she wrote of the workout.
She’s also shown her followers her sweet side through her workouts. Gellar recently regrammed a video from fellow former WB star Shannen Doherty, who is currently in treatment for cancer. Gellar is splayed on the floor after what seems to be an intense dance workout (Doherty posts them often on her own page). “I think I killed her,” says Doherty of a sweaty Gellar.
And in an adorable nod to Buffy, Doherty refers to herself as the #cancerslayer and to Gellar as the #slayer.

Those who were watching the TV series about Buffy and her battles with vampires can hardly believe that the active blonde is already 39. However, there’s no wonder, because the actress seems to know the secret of eternal youth.
Stay active anyway!
The first step to perfect body consists of outdoor activities. Any activity. Besides, Sarah adores Pilates. It not only keeps her body toned, but also helps the actress to eradicate the discomfort of scoliosis.
Moreover, even when Sarah was pregnant she used to do Pilates.
We are what we eat.
Another contributor to the actresses figure is healthy eating. She doesn’t deprive herself of some tasty dishes, but she tries not to eat the food that can harm her skin or health.
It is said that Sarah Michelle Gellar used to be a big fan of fast and effective weight loss methods.
What kind of diet did Sarah chose?
If she urgently needed to bring herself up, Sarah turned to the cabbage diet. Within a week she ate cabbage soup along with chicken, fish and vegetables. Also, she was allowed to take fruit instead of sweets.
Cabbage is rich in fiber that promotes active fat burning. One of the benefits of a cabbage diet is that the list of allowed products can be used in any desired amount. Such a diet is a kind of “big cleaning” for the body.
The Buffy star loves bowling, and never gives up the possibility to “drive balls” with friends.
Don’t know what to do? – Try martial arts.
Besides, during the filming of the TV series Buffy, Sarah seriously studied tekvando and was very successful in it.
Sarah Michelle Gellar has apologized to followers on social media for a Thanksgiving post in which she shared pictures of herself in lingerie that she said were serving as “a reminder not to overeat” during the holiday. On Instagram, fans of the popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer star took exception to the message, accusing the actress of body shaming and sending a “problematic” message to young girls struggling to deal with destructive notions of female beauty.

I’m just going to pin these up all over my house as a reminder not to overeat on Thursday #thanksgivingprep
“Please consider rewording this, there’s nothing wrong with eating or being something other than skinny. And this post is a great way to trigger people’s eating disorders,” wrote one Instagram user.
“I suggest you do some research on eating disorders, the mental health issues that go along with them, and how diet culture is harmful to women,” added another. “Girls look up to you, and you should be mindful of the message you’re sending.”
Other fans of the actress defended her from the criticism.
“As a former anorexic and bulimic, I don’t see any harm or malice in the post. She looks amazing and shouldn’t be shamed for looking that way,” wrote one supporter.
In a statement, Gellar clarified that the post was meant as a joke and that she had no intention to shame anyone.
“It’s come to my attention that some people think I was ‘fat shaming’ with this post. That could not be further from my intentions,” said Gellar. “I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to myself not to do that. I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humor. Anyone that knows me, knows I would never intentionally ‘shame’ anyone on any basis. I am a champion of all people.”
