Add in a heart rate monitor or at-home blood pressure cuff, and a smart water bottle, and you have even more information being collected and correlated, no spreadsheet and daily note-taking required.

Maybe you don’t want to track your weight over time, but chances are, your doctors and healthcare team do. Or maybe it’s not you, but someone in your family who needs to keep an eye on their body weight. Smart scales are smart enough to know the difference between a few different users and can track their weights separately and privately. Bluetooth vs. Wi-Fi Scales

Smart scales are either Bluetooth-enabled, or both Bluetooth- and Wi-Fi-enabled. Wi-Fi scales generally cost more because they require more components to work. They’re also much more convenient.

To get your daily weigh-ins off of a Bluetooth scale and into the app where they’ll be tracked, you need a Bluetooth device by your side. If you leave your companion smartphone, fitness tracker, or running watch in the other room, you’re out of luck until it’s within Bluetooth range. (Some scales can save a recorded weight until the next sync, but the cheaper ones do not.) A Wi-Fi-enabled scale doesn’t have this problem. It syncs your data as long as it has a signal from your Wi-Fi router. In our testing experience, Wi-Fi syncing is also more reliable, whereas Bluetooth syncing fails from time to time.

Pregnancy Mode

Women who are pregnant or who might become pregnant have unique needs when it comes to tracking their weight. Plus many pregnant women do not want impedance measurements, which are taken by way of mild electrical impulses sent through the feet to estimate body composition (things like body fat, bone density, and water percentage). People who have an implanted health device, such as a pacemaker, are often warned not to use impedance scales either.

While a few scales that support impedance measurements have an option to turn them off, only one scale, the QardioBase 2, has a full pregnancy-tracking mode. When enabled, impedance is shut off, and the scale flashes a happy face every time you step on it, rather than showing your weight in numbers. The best smart scales for 2020: Withings, Fitbit, Garmin, Eufy and JaxJox

Today’s bathroom scales can do so much more than just show you your weight. These smart scales can provide you with a more complete picture of your body, tracking your weight over time, helping you with weight loss and measuring how much fat and muscle you have, among other metrics.

A smart bathroom scale can do all of those measurements and more. But with so many smart bathroom models available, including ones from Eufy, Fitbit, Withings and Garmin, it’s hard to pick the best smart scale for you. Whether you’ve got weight-loss goals, fitness goals or you’re just interested in your health stats, here I’ll break down the top smart bathroom scales on the market to help you choose the best smart scale.

What is a smart scale?

Put simply, a smart scale is one that uses Bluetooth or a Wi-Fi connection to sync all of the metrics it records about you to a health app on your phone such as Apple Health. Many of these bathroom scales have sensors to measure body fat percentage (including BMI and visceral fat), muscle mass, bone mass, heart rate and more measurements and data, in addition to weighing you.

The flaws in measuring body fat with a scale

All of the scales on this list can measure your body composition, weight and BMI using an electrical current that travels from the scale’s sensor through your leg, across your pelvis and down the other leg. It measures how much resistance that current encounters and then uses a mathematical formula to estimate how much fat, muscle and bone makes up your entire weight.

While these features are useful, they aren’t always reliable. Consumer Reports tested the accuracy of many scales that measure BMI and body fat percentage and found that most didn’t hit the mark compared to a BodyPod — one of the gold-standard clinical tests for body fat measurements.

Those data inaccuracies can be chalked up to many things, including if you’re sick, retaining water, have recently exercised, are menstruating or have consumed alcohol. One of the most influential factors is where you carry your weight — if your chest and arms are slim, but you have more fat and muscle in your pelvis and legs, it might incorrectly calculate your overall body fat percentage.

Each scale I stepped on gave me a different body fat percentage, but each number was within a 10% range. But for muscle mass percentage measurements, the range was between 33% and 63%. Two of the scales I tested provide a basal metabolic rate, but there was a whopping 631-calorie difference between the two. That’s more than one McDonald’s Big Mac or three glazed Krispy Kreme donuts.

All of this is to say, don’t get caught up in those metrics. Follow the directions that come with your scale to get the most accurate measurements and data possible, and if you’re concerned about your body fat percentage, body composition, health or fitness, talk to your doctor about getting a proper scan.

Of all the scales I tested, this is my favorite. That’s mostly because the Eufy app (iOS and Android) that you use with the scale is very easy to navigate, and the app will track and give you detailed data and reports of your weight, body fat, water, muscle mass, bone mass, BMI, BMR and more. The app will also flag those measurements as low, normal or high, so you know how your health stats compare to what’s considered the standard in health and fitness for your height and age.

Comparing my stats to other scales, Eufy’s seemed the most consistent with its data, though my BMR is suspiciously high. One of the best things about the Eufy scale is that it supports up to 16 different users. Simply select the correct user in the Eufy app and all of your data and metrics from the scale will sync to that profile in the mobile app. It also connects with Apple Health and Fitbit.

Withings’ digital bathroom scale comes packed with lots of features that go above and beyond the rest. It provides detailed historical data and metrics on your weight, BMI, body fat, muscle mass, body water, heart rate and bone mass, so you can see how those measurements and your health and fitness change over weeks, months, quarters and years. This bathroom scale also records the weather every day that you hop on the scale, to help you decide what to wear if you step on the scale first thing in the morning.

Garmin’s Connect app (Android and iOS) offers a holistic view of your health, including data and metrics such as your activity level, weight, BMI, body fat percentage and other measurements and data.

The bathroom scale measures weight, BMI, body fat, body water, muscle mass and bone mass, and it offers charts for tracking weight loss and other data over a week, a month and a year. It uses four AA batteries, and battery life is up to nine months.

The Fitbit Aria 2 Wi-Fi scale measures weight, BMI and body fat, but it gave me less data than the rest of the scales. This digital bathroom scale is best for people who currently use a Fitbit wearable and want all of their data — activity, nutrition, weight, BMI, body fat, sleep — in one dashboard. The Aria 2 also gets points for being really cute. As you interact with the bathroom scale, you see an animated face that smiles at you and goes to sleep as the device goes into standby mode.

This device also includes a lean mode, for professional athletes or bodybuilders whose physiques are different from the average person. Plus, up to eight people can use the Aria 2 and each of their metrics and data are saved to their user profiles in the Fitbit app (Android and iOS).

While the JaxJox bathroom scale is best used in tandem with JaxJox’s smart kettle bell, activity tracker and/or heart rate monitor, it does a good job on its own. Even if you don’t own any other JaxJox product, this scale is still worth your attention because its BMR and BMI measurements and data were the most correct out of any of the scales I tested.

It also measures visceral fat, which research now shows is the fat most associated with insulin resistance, high levels of bad cholesterol, and low levels of good cholesterol. This bathroom scale is also cheaper than most of the scales on this list. And you can use the app (Android and iOS) to sync your activity data from Apple Health to your mobile device (iPhone only).

The best bathroom scales ain’t what they used to be. They’re now called things like ‘body composition monitors’, because they’ve evolved. As spring approaches, they can help you safely lose weight or, if you’re bulking up like Thor, gain weight. Bathroom scales now not only measure body weight, but also your body fat. That’s done using well-proven science around the extent to which different bodies resist electricity when a small, painless voltage is run through them. That’s why you always have to stand on these things barefoot: they’re running electricity through you – don’t worry, you won’t feel a thing.

What is the best smart bathroom scale?

At T3, we did a test a few years back to assess the accuracy of a range of bathroom scales, using a Loughborough University lab test (water displacement) to find out a T3 staffer’s exact weight. On comparing it to the scales, we found that most were inaccurate to varying degrees with the exception of Tanita’s scales.

Exact accuracy, as with fitness wearables, is not not necessarily essential, however. If you’re tracking your weight and body fat percentage long-term, if the statistics are going in the right direction, and within safe limits it doesn’t really matter if your scales are a few grammes out. None of the scales below are dangerously inaccurate.

That said, the best scale in terms of reliability and usefulness is probably the Tanita RD 953 which strikes an excellent balance between looks, accuracy and range of body metrics measured. If you just want to track your weight and body fat percentage alongside your favourite fitness tracking wearables, you might be better off with the much simpler scales from John Lewis, Fitbit or Garmin.

Bathroom scales: what you need to know

Firstly, you don’t have to put them in the bathroom, though that is the standard location for scales in the UK.

Secondly, what we’re talking about here are body monitor scales or smart scales – you can still get plenty of bathroom scales that only tell you your weight, but that is not necessarily a useful metric on its own.

Smart scales range from accessories that you add to your fitness wearable’s data feed – from the likes of Fitbit, Nokia and Garmin – to something more like laboratory equipment, which is able to track things such as visceral fat and BMR.

As with most areas of tech, these scales are largely styled so as to fit seamlessly with your lifestyle and home decor, rather than looking like something you’d find in your GP’s surgery – though there are exceptions to this.

Once you input your gender, height and age, scales can estimate muscle mass, bone mass and body water percentage. It can then add easy stuff like your BMI – a weight-to-height ratio that is fairly useful for calculating obesity, although it can be skewed if you have a lot of muscle, as rugby players never tire of telling us. It can also give insight into your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR – the number of calories you burn daily just by existing) and visceral fat rating (the more dangerous fats that surround the stomach and vital organs).

Although this data is usually shown onscreen, these scales also work with apps via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections, so you can track your progress over time on your phone and/or laptop.

It’s worth bearing in mind that many of the statistics pulled up by scales are informed estimates rather than gospel truths. Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) can be easily estimated from your weight, height, gender and age, but a more accurate calculation would also take into consideration your daily and weekly activity level, which most scales don’t.

Not everyone even agrees that BMR or BMI are useful – for athletes and those who exercise hard every day, arguably they are not. However for the majority of the population, they are.

So don’t live your life based on what your scales tell you. But do take their advice on board when working on a diet, fitness regime or general medical programme.

Tanita puts out three types of scale, and they’re all in this list. At the top end, they do expensive devices perhaps more suited to the deep pockets and thirst for knowledge of a research institution. At the bottom, very good body monitor scales that look absolutely horrible. Right in the middle sits this beauty, which will tell you everything from weight to BMI to visceral fat level and a slightly terrifying ‘cardio age’ estimate – try to stay the right side of that.

All the data is sent via Bluetooth to Tanita’s own app which has improved a lot in recent times in terms of reliability. It feeds into Apple Health and Google Health, so you can track your body’s fluctuations over time. The 4x AA batteries it takes seem to last forever, too.

For the price, you get a lot of useful data, good ease of use and a quite attractive, accurate set of scales, but one reading that we think Tanita might consider doing away with is its ‘physique rating’. If our experience is anything to go by – ‘obese’, if you please – its calculation is either based on the generally more slender build of people from Tanita’s native Japan, or it’s just plain wrong.

Fitbit’s Aria 2 is like a more attractive, better connected, but much simpler version of the Tanita RD-953. It only tells you your weight, BMI and body fat percentage – which is all a lot of people want.

The minor genius of it is that it then reports this to your Fitbit account, so you can monitor your weight trends and use it alongside your Fitbit wearable’s daily calorie-burn estimates. Obviously, if you don’t use a Fitbit, that’s not so useful but it’s still a solid set of scales.

Add MyFitnessPal or Fitbit’s own dietary features and you can then sync your meal-plans, daily calories consumed and weight goals, if you want. Fitbit’s app is a decent motivator and will let you monitor your calories in vs calories out in an exactingly precise manner. Whether that’s a healthy route to fitness and weight loss is up to you.

For a cost-effective solution to weighing yourself, look no further than John Lewis. You get to see your weight on screen, there’s no app or other ‘smartness’ and its models costs as little as 18 quid and come with a 15-year warranty. There’s nothing to get excited over and nothing much to complain about either.

4. Withings Body Cardio

On top of the body composition data, the Withings Body Cardio scale also claims to calculate your cardiovascular health through a Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) reading. As well as measuring your heart rate – Withings suggests doing it at the same time each day, preferably first thing in the morning, before you’ve had your morning coffee – the Body Cardio calculates your ‘arterial health’ via PWV. This measures the velocity at which your heart pulses blood into your arteries and so is related to (but not the same as) blood pressure, and a faster PWV can be a symptom of a less healthy heart.

A similar method is used in several other products, but they’re more geared around telling you if you are ready to workout hard on any given day, or take it easy. The Nokia markets it more as a warning sign that you should see a doctor or revise your personal habits.

The scales look great and use a handy arrow display to ensure you are standing correctly balanced on them when being weighed. Weight, body fat percentage, BMI and PWV can all be tracked over time with the Nokia Health Mate mobile app via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth – it’s like a more French version of Fitbit. The price does seem a bit on the high side for what you get, however.

5. Omron BF511

Affordable alternative to Tanita

The Omron BF511 is similar to the Tanita 901 at #1, but adds handles that you bend over and grasp whilst weighing yourself. This supposedly gives a more accurate reading of your body fat than is possible from just shooting a current through your feet, but is a tad undignified.

The Omron calculates BMI, BMR and visceral fat levels. There’s no app, but for the money it’s a solid choice if you can put up with its rather NHS clinic looks.

6. Tanita BC 1500 Ironman

Best scales for more serious athletes

Triathletes are among the most keen datamongers in the endurance universe, so it’s is no surprise that Tanita – one of the best brands for smart scales – partnered up with Ironman for this model.

The BC 1500 uses 8 electrodes to calculate your body composition, with no fewer than four retractable handles and four sensors on the scale platform increasing the precision of the reading and making it more accurate.

As a result you get both full-body composition (fat/water/muscle), but also results for specific body segments (trunk, right arm, left arm, right leg and left leg).

The software for your laptop or mobile is more like a bit of academic software than a user-friendly app, but most triathletes would probably have it no other way. If you’re just someone who wants to measure your weight, the BC 1500 is total overkill.

7. Garmin Index Smart Scale

Best for Garmin wearable users

As the market leader in more serious sport tracking devices, Garmin naturally produces a smart scale that is quite similar to Fitbits… but a touch more serious.

On top of measuring weight, BMI and body fat the Index adds muscle mass percentage, then syncs (with something less than 100% reliability, it must be said), with Garmin Connect. As such it can feed into all your other Garmin-tracked activities, appearing on your Connect dashboard and helping with calorie burn estimates and so on.

The Omron HBF-514 has most of the metrics found in the Tanita model including resting metabolism which is seldom found in other machines.

It uses hi-tech sensors which seem to provide an extremely accurate reading… as long as you have an ‘average’ build. If you have quite a lot of muscle mass, this scale bizarrely gets your readings wrong time and again.

This Omron model has the unusual combination of having all the metrics needed by athletes but is actually very unsuitable for them! For non-athletes, it is one of the best scales on the market but could be considered expensive.

Best for Weight Loss Only: EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

First and foremost, you must realize that this scale only measures your weight and doesn’t offer metrics such as body fat %. In terms of traditional scales, EatSmart is top of its class due to its accuracy, 400 pound capacity and nice design.
