Tried And Tested: Brow Products That Don’t Budge
Tinted, micro-bladed or HD, eyebrows have been an essential part of our beauty routines ever since Cara Delevingne persuaded us to retire skinny ‘90s brows. And even if you don’t consider yourself as a ‘makeup person’, it’s likely that you’ve experimented with eyebrow grooming in some shape or form. My brow hairs are naturally sparse and very faint in colour, which is why I choose to fill-in the gaps with a dark brown pencil, powder or gel, to achieve a fuller and fluffier finish. I can sometimes spend up to 15 minutes of my morning makeup routine, carving out the perfect graduated arch, all in the name of brows that wow.
Exhibit A – this is why my barely-there brows need some colour.
If you scroll through Instagram, you’ll notice that celebrities, ‘gram models and normal gals like us, take our brow game very seriously. Semi-permanent brow treatments such as micro-blading are painful (and pricey) and there’s always a chance that – if you’re super fussy like I am – you might hate the result.
So, what other options are there for women who want statement brows that last longer? ‘Long-wearing brows frame your face and keeps make-up looking smart and sharp all day,’ explains Hi Brow Expert Emma Apps. ‘In summer it’s even more important to opt for makeup products that last as we tend to perspire more, so nothing beats a brow look that is smudge-free and water-proof,’ says Emma.
With so many water-proof brow products on the high-street to choose from, it’s hard to tell what works best. So, I set myself a mission to try and test an assortment of long-lasting brow tools that are £25 and under to see if they live up to their beauty claim. And here’s how it went down.
1. Wunder2 Wunderbrow 1-Step Brow Gel, £19.95
The beauty claim: Water-proof, smudge-proof and transfer-proof brows in one-step that last for days.
How does it work? Made with PermaFix technology, this eyebrow gel promises to lock in colour and create tiny fibres that look like real hairs. The gel come with a trusty thin wand for easy application.
How long will brows actually last? If you don’t touch your brows too much, they stay intact for at least two days.
Is it sweat and waterproof? No! I My eyebrows were smudged after sweating in a spin class at the gym on day two.
How wide is the shade range? It’s available in five tones: Blonde, Auburn, Brunette, Black/Brown and Jet Black.
Will it last overnight: Yes, my WunderBrows survived one night of sleep.
SCORE OUT OF 10: 5
Reason: I was a little disappointed because the brows did smudge when I sweated it out at the gym. However, I did like the brow definition that I got from the product in the Jet-Black shade.
2. Hi Brow 24HR Brow Powder Compact, £18.49, and Hi Brow Smoothing Wax Pencil, £7.49
The beauty claim: Hi Brow Powder Compact combined with the Smoothing Wax gives you a water-proof brow that lasts for 24 hours.
How does it work? I used the Hi Brow Powder in Dark Brown using an angled brush to fill-in gaps in my brows and then ran the Smoothing Wax over it to seal the finished look.
Did it pass the smudge test? No! As I ran my fingers through the product it smudged at the eyebrow tail.
How long will brows actually last? If you smudge the product on purpose than it does move but if you don’t touch it, your Hi Brow makeup will last all day.
Is it sweat and waterproof? Yes! The pigmentation was still there after I touched my brows with wet hands.
How wide is the shade range? It’s available in four colours: Light Brown, Dark Brown, Dark Charcoal and Light Grey.
Will it last overnight: No, because the product promises to last for 24 hours only.
Reason: I’m a fan of the combination of these two brow products, and the finished look is stunning, but it does smudge. Plus, using the Hi Brow Smoothing Wax to finish-up is just an extra step in my makeup routine which is what I was trying to avoid.
3. Bardou Booster Brow, £25
The beauty claim: A semi- permanent brow-gel that is smudge and waterproof and builds effortless brows that last up to four days.
How does it work? The eyebrow gel comes with a wand that has a thin brush which is great for drawing-on individual hairs. It goes on smoothly but does take a couple minutes to dry.
Did it pass the smudge test? Normal brow makeup melts away when I touch it with my fingertips, but this miracle-worker stayed put.
Is it sweat and waterproof? Yes, these brows didn’t budge after my water-test.
How long do brows actually last? Although I absolutely love the texture of the Booster Brow in Black/Brown, the fibres started to fade away after two days, but that might be because my face cleanser got in the mix.
How wide is the shade range? It’s available in four shades: Blonde, Auburn, Brown and Black/Brown.
Will it last overnight: Yes, for the first two nights.
SCORE OUT OF 10: 8
Reason: I love everything about this product but was hoping for my Bardou brows last up to four days as promised in the claim. I would have been more satisfied with three days.
4. Mac Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set
The beauty claim: A non-greasy, pigmented, water-proof formula with a small precision brush that softly sets hairs for up to 8 hours.
How does it work? Use the mascara wand to brush pigments of colour through eyebrow hairs. Repeat this until you get your desired look.
Did it pass the smudge test? Yes, I used a wet cotton pad to smudge brows at the end of the day, and they didn’t budge at all.
How long will brows actually last? My brows lasted all day long which means it lives up to its beauty claim.
Is it sweat and waterproof? Yes, and yes!
How wide is the shade range? It’s available in 6 versatile shades from light to dark.
Will it last overnight: No, because the product only promises to last for 8 hours.
Reason: I love the fact that these brows are completely smudge- and water-proof. But I would have liked a slightly darker colour payoff for more definition.
AND THE WINNER IS…
5. Eyelure DyBrow Semi Permanent Eyebrow Tint, £7.49
The beauty claim: An ideal treatment for dark, glossy, semi-permanent brows that last up to 6 weeks.
How does it work? Mix brow formula instructions together and apply according to the instructions included.
Did it pass the smudge test? Yes, smudges are a thing of the past thanks to Eylure Dybrow in Dark Brown.
How long will brows actually last? It’s been a week and the colour payoff is still going strong, I have a feeling that this may be the winner.
Is it sweat and waterproof? Yes, because it’s essentially a temporary tint that darkens brow hairs.
How wide is the shade range? It’s available in two hues: Black and Dark Brown.
Will it last overnight: Of course, this is the real deal.
SCORE OUT OF 10: 10
Reason: Using a semi-permanent tint on my eyebrows means that I don’t have to fuss with makeup products anymore to achieve my desired look. And I only have to wait for the colour to fade, which means I won’t completely miss out on any hot new brow trends.
Although the Eylure DyBrow Semi Permanent Tint in Dark Brown stood out for me as the best choice for brows that last longer, I would still highly recommend Bardou’s Booster Brow and MAC’s Pro Longwear Brow Set. Because let’s face it, nobody’s got time for brows that smudge or move around your face.

This article originally appeared on The Debrief.
As far as brow horror stories go, mine was actually a blessing. The year was 2002, it was a Friday night, and all my friends were getting their eyebrows waxed at the mall. Well, except me. When it was my turn to sit down, the waxer gave me one look and some real talk: “I could wax you, but honestly you don’t need it,” she told me. “Just tweeze. Trust me.” Being left out of this coming-of-age ritual was, of course, devastating to eighth-grade me who only wanted to look like Drew Barrymore. But fast-forward to my twenties, and it’s been a real joy not having to spend the time and money trying to find the best brow-growth serum. (Colleagues tell me it’s this one, though, if you’re curious.)
So when microblading, the semipermanent eyebrow procedure that gives you full, natural-looking eyebrows, came along, I sat out yet another brow trend. It’s not that my brows wouldn’t benefit from some slight filling in, I’ve just held steadfastly to the advice that hasn’t steered me wrong in 16 years. Also, I hate needles, and I hear it’s hella painful. So there’s that.
But now the best of both worlds has arrived: Maybelline’s Tattoo Studio Brow Tint Pen. Unlike most clunky brow markers, this one has a four-pronged tip that gives you the same realistic hairlike strokes as a pro microblading tool. It’s also got a slanted design that makes it easy to flick and follow your brow’s natural shape.
I mean, just look at this thing in action:
Not only does the angled design make it faster if you’re doing a rush job in the morning—and honestly, who really wants to spend more than 30 seconds on their brows each day?—I’ve also found it keeps you from getting too heavy-handed at the tail, which is where most people’s brows tend to be the most sparse.
The formula also boasts a lofty 24-hour smudge-free claim, and while I haven’t slept in it, the swatches I made on my hand in the morning legit didn’t budge until I washed them off at the end of the day. And after a week of testing, the same goes for my actual brows, which are probably are the most important gauge. The best part of all, though? Unlike microblading, which costs upwards of $1,500, this pen is only $10.
I never did get to properly thank my brow fairy godmother. But hopefully this counts as paying it forward—if only to save some 14-year-old’s brows for two decades from now.

Brow aficionados these days have undoubtedly come across the ever-so-popular microblading solution—which involves getting semi-permanent tattoos to fill in patches—to achieve fuller arches. While I’m usually game to try literally any such treatment that pops up (I’m looking at you, vampire and vagina facials!), face tattoos have always felt a little too hardcore for me. So when a microblading tattoo pen (with zero actual tattooing required) came across my desk, I raised an arch in intrigue.
Iconic Beauty Microbrow Tattoo Pen ($9) is meant to give you that microblading effect without the permanence factor—AKA a makeup bag version of the treatment that requires zero tattooing. That I’m down to try. “Microblading pencils are great for people who need to fill in bald spots in the brows who aren’t comfortable or confident using a classic brow pencil,” says Molly R. Stern, a celebrity makeup artist. “My preference is a hard formula pencil which can be feathered and look very natural. The microblading versions deposit more color, which generally have a stain and cover more area in one stroke.”
To see what the pen, which has four teeny tips to mimic hairs, could do for my brows, I swapped it for my usual brow gel. Now, disclaimer: My brows aren’t super patchy to begin with, but the pen did a great job emphasizing what I’ve already got. I started in the inner-corner of my brow and began dragging it across skin, noticing that my brows looked much fuller as I did so. As I approached the arch, the pen allowed me to define it more than a typical pencil or gel because each stroke looks like tiny hairs. Towards the tail, my brows get thinner, so I need more fullness there—and the pen didn’t let me down. Flipping it so that the hairs tailed down, I created a few strokes that I swear could’ve been mistaken for my real brows.
As I gazed into the mirror afterwards, my arches looked darker and thicker. To add to the brushed-up, fluffy effect I prefer, I glossed over them with my brow gel and wound up having more lush-looking brows than ever before. My faux microbladed brows lasted the entire day, too. All in all, consider me a newfound devotee of microblading pens—so I can live an even fuller brow bush life than I ever realized was possible.

For the love of your arches, here are 5 pro tips for naturally gorgeous eyebrows. And you can also try soap brows for a fuller look, which only involves—you guessed it—a bar of soap.
Thin eyebrows are so 1990s. Thick, lush brows are back.
If you’ve over-plucked or have trouble growing your own, no worries.
All you need is one of the best tattoo brow pens and some patience.
You can learn to do your own eyebrows and save an astonishing amount of money.
Or you could go into business doing permanent makeup for others.
Today, we’ll review the tools of the trade, including microblading pens and rotary tattoo machines.
What Is Better: Microblading or Tattoo Eyebrows?
Microblading is different from traditional tattooing.
You‘ll use a different pigment that needs to be renewed about every year or so.
Microblading can be done manually without a power tool like a tattoo machine.
And instead of a single needle, microblading eyebrow pens have multiple needle points (1).
If you have your eyebrows professionally microbladed, you’ll spend $400 to $1000.
Meanwhile, tattooed eyebrows may cost a little less and last longer, but may not look as natural.
You may have seen someone older with bluish eyebrows. That’s because the tattoo ink faded over the years.
To improve upon the makeup tattooing technique, some artists have perfected “microcolor infusion.”
They use a rotary tattoo machine with a single needle and special pigment to draw each individual line of hair. Like microblading, it’s semipermanent and needs to be renewed every so often (2).
Let’s begin with tattoo machine pens to do permanent makeup. Then later, we’ll discuss microblading pens.
If you’re unsure about whether these brow pens are what you need, skip to the bottom. There you’ll find non-permanent eyebrow pens that will let you experiment risk-free.
Charme Princesse Rotary Permanent Makeup Pen Machine
Here is one of the most popular tattoo brow pens. It features three speeds and a quiet Swiss motor that runs cool.
There are four modes total that allow you to do eyebrows, eyeliner, lip makeup, and small tattoos.
Although it comes with a foot pedal, you can operate it without that.
On the handle, you can adjust the protrusion of the needle. The stroke length is 2.5 mm.
Pinkiou Permanent Makeup Pen (10-0127)
Pinkiou makes an assortment of tools for permanent makeup.
This rotary tattoo pen fits into the hand like a marker. It’s made of anodized aircraft aluminum that stays cool while you work.
The machine operates at 10,000 to 15,000 rpm but with little vibration. There are three power settings in total.
The package includes needles to get you started.
BIOMASER Permanent Makeup Tattoo Machine Kit with Rotary Pen
Here’s a kit that includes a rotary pen and power supply, a foot pedal, ink, ink cups, needles, and practice skin. Although it has the footswitch, it can also run continuously without it.
We’ve heard that this machine is similar to ones used in cosmetic school.
The speed of the Swiss coreless motor is adjustable from 8000 to 10,000 rpm. You can also alter the length of the needle.
The company offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a 12-month warranty.
BIOMASER Original Mini Permanent Makeup Tattoo Machine Pen
If you’d like just the rotary pen and not an entire kit of accessories, here’s a good option.
Not only can it do permanent makeup, but it also works for micro meso-therapy if you use the proper needles.
Biomaser P1 Permanent Makeup Machine Kit
Here’s a machine with five modes. It can do eyebrows, lip tattoos, eyeliner, meso-therapy, and other skin treatments. It’s made to cause minimal damage to the skin.
There are two CNC-machined aluminum handpieces so that you always have one tool ready to use. The digital touchscreen simplifies setup and operation.
Solong Complete Tattoo Kit Permanent Rotary Tattoo Pen
This tattoo machine can do more than shade eyebrows. It can also minimize stretch marks. It’s an all-in-one pen for permanent makeup.
The lightweight pen is made of CNC-machined aircraft aluminum alloy with an anodized finish. It won’t rust, and it feels comfortable in the hand.
The package includes a digital power supply and foot pedal, silicone needle cartridges, and pigment mixing sticks. The company offers a satisfaction guarantee.
Permanent Makeup Machine Kit Mast P10 by Dragon Hawk
The P10 Mast rotary tattoo machine provides good value for the price. It’s thin, compact, and lightweight.
The aircraft aluminum alloy casing encloses a custom Japanese coreless motor. As a result, it runs cool and quiet.
Feel free to use it for all types of permanent makeup.
BioTouch Permanent Makeup MOSAIC MACHINE
The highlight of this tattoo brow pen is its compatibility with different types of needles. It accommodates round and flat needles with a varying number of prongs.
It runs at 10,000 RPM to give you plenty of power and speed.
It’s made in the USA and recommended by permanent makeup artists.
Solong Tattoo Permanent Makeup Pen Tattoo Machine EM804
One thing you want to watch as you shop for eyebrow tattoo pens is the needle protrusion. The skin is thin on the face, and permanent makeup generally rests in the upper layer of the dermis.
This machine has an adjustable needle protrusion between 0 to 2.5mm. It’s good for lining eyes and lips and doing permanent eyebrows.
There are three speed controls between 8000 to 16000 rpm.
But what you may love the most is the fact that it’s cordless. It runs on a lithium battery.
It also comes with an assortment of sterilized tips and needles.
Pinkiou Rechargeable Eyebrow Permanent Makeup Tattoo Microblading Pen
Here’s another rechargeable brow pen. It also works on lips.
There are three levels of speed, but even on the highest, the pen stays cool and runs quietly.
BioTouch DELUXE MERLIN MACHINE Kit
If you like to keep your tools organized, this American-made pen comes in a nice case. The box has space for needles, the power adapter, and the foot pedal.
The only downside is that you must use the brand’s own needles. Of course it’s not compatible with microblading needles, either.
HoriKing Tattoo Supply Permanent Makeup Eyebrow Pen Kit
As you can see, there’s no lack of brow pens for tattooing. This attractive machine is made of aluminum alloy and features a Swiss-made motor.
It operates with little to no vibration between 12,000 to 15,000 RPM.
It’s ideal for all types of permanent makeup. The package includes the rotary pen, power supply, and disposable needles.
Manual Tattoo Brow Pens
You don’t need to have a rotary tattoo machine to do eyebrow makeup. But you will need to choose between reusable and disposable tattoo eyebrow pens.
BIOMASER Professional Tattoo Manual Pen Microblading Pen
This microblading pen resembles an X-Acto knife. It has a stainless steel barrel that you can disinfect and reuse.
Unscrew the tip and you can replace the disposable needles. The package includes a few needles to get you started.
Xiaoyu 6PCS Manual Tattoo Microblading Pen
Here’s a package of six aluminum alloy microblading pens. They are exceptionally lightweight and easy to use.
Each one has a copper nonslip handle.
Stylia Microblading Pen Two-Sided Manual Tattoo Eyebrow Pen
The benefit of this manual tattoo eyebrow pen is that you can mount needles on each end. It’s compatible with pretty much any blades or needles available.
You can use it with round shading blades, 7-17 needles, and U blades, among others.
It’s built to stand up to regular use and won’t rust if left for hours in disinfectant.
The manufacturer offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
ZUSING Very Sharp Disposable Microblading Pens 14/16/18 Pins
If you’re new to microblading, you might not realize that sharper is better. You’ll cause less trauma to your client’s skin if your needles are ultra-sharp.
Therefore, you may appreciate these disposable pens with extra sharp needles. Their diameter is 0.2mm, and you can choose from 14, 16, or 18 pins.
Each package contains ten pieces that are pre-sterilized by gamma rays. And each pen has a cap to protect the needles.
Microblading Pen – Yuelong 5PCS Sterilized Disposable Eyebrow Pen
If you want 14-prong needles, these are made of surgical-grade stainless steel. They are pre-mounted on disposable pens that are sterilized and individually wrapped.
They are from a professional tattooing supply company that offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Pinkiou 3D Microblading Pen Permanent Makeup Pen
This reusable eyebrow pen is made of aluminum. It has two heads for regular or round needles. In fact, it comes with two microblading needles with 14 pins so you can try it out.
It has an ergonomic grip that won’t slip while you’re wearing gloves.
It’s packaged in a transparent box and comes with a satisfaction guarantee.
Pinkiou Steel Microblading Pen
The difference between this microblading pen and the one above is the material. This one is built from stainless steel and copper, not aluminum.
It’s suitable for blades with 7 to 17 pins. The package includes three trial needles and a clear storage box
Non-Permanent Brow Pens
If you’re not ready to commit to permanent makeup, there’s no problem. Practice with these non-permanent eyebrow pens to see how you like your new look.
Maybelline New York TattooStudio Brow Tint Pen Makeup
Maybelline’s TattooStudio brow pen comes in four colors: blond, soft brown, medium brown, and deep brown.
When it was tested by consumers, 75% agreed that the effects lasted 24 hours.
The shape of the point resembles a microblading pen with multiple prongs. Sweeping it through the hairs on your eyebrows, you can fill in gaps and add definition.
The formula is resistant to smudging and transferring once it sets.
Maybelline Total Temptation Eyebrow Definer Pencil
Maybelline’s 21st-century eyebrow pencil has both a teardrop tip and a spoolie brush. But the makeup is mild enough to remove with micellar water.
Authentic Music Flower Eyebrow Tattoo Pen
This Korean beauty product offers colors beyond what Maybelline has. You can buy dark gray and chestnut, not just brown.
The design is similar in that it resembles a microblading pen.
The pigment takes a few minutes to set, which allows you to correct mistakes. Once it’s dry, it lasts for a day or longer. It’s resistant to sweat.
L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Shape & Fill Pencil
L’Oreal’s brow pen is a mechanical pencil with two tips. One end is for outlining and the other for shading.
It’s available in five colors, from blond to dark brunette.
LINTEC Tattoo Eyebrow Pen
The durable pigment of this eyebrow pen requires oil-based cleanser or makeup remover. It’s water-proof so that it won’t smudge with rain or sweat.
Available colors include brown and chestnut.
Three Essentials You Need to Know about Tattooing Eyebrows
Whether you do your own brows or someone else’s, there are certain things you need to know about tattooing eyebrows.
First, the work needs to be done in sanitary conditions. Just like tattooing, the equipment needs to be sterile, and you should be wearing gloves.
Second, after the work is done, it’s crucial to care for the wound properly. You won’t be able to sweat, swim, sunbathe, or wear makeup around your eyebrows until they heal. You shouldn’t even sleep on your face or put pressure on your brows.
Third, about a month after the work is done, it’s time for a follow-up appointment to ensure that all is well. That’s the time when some touchup work might need to happen.
Please realize that it’s normal for the pigment to fade a bit while the eyebrows are healing. Avoid complications by following the aftercare recommendations of the artist.
We hope you discovered the tattoo brow pens you need today.
Fortunately, there are many to choose from, depending on the type of permanent makeup you want to do. Just double-check compatibility with the needles that you’ll be using.
Please get the training you need before applying permanent makeup to yourself or others.

The 5 Best Waterproof Eyebrow Pencils
Filling in (or drawing on) your brows, symmetrically, takes a lot of effort. So naturally, the last thing you want when exposed to moisture — whether that’s water or sweat — is for them to smudge or wear off. If you keep one of the best waterproof eyebrow pencils in your makeup kit, however, you’ll never run into this problem again.
There are a few things to remember when buying a waterproof eyebrow pencil, though. First of all, it’s a good idea to find a pencil that has a little spoolie on the end. Those are helpful, because it will help distribute the pigment over the hairs in a more natural way. If you apply too much, just brush the spoolie up through the hairs to diffuse the color. It’ll also help them look more full and allow you to shape them however you like.
It’s also a good idea to have a little makeup remover on-hand in case you mess anything up. Since waterproof makeup sets pretty solidly, you’ll have to move fast to erase any errant lines. Grab some micellar water and dip a Q-tip in it to help erase any pigment that winds up on your skin.
Got all that? Great. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the best waterproof eyebrow pencils, so sweat doesn’t stand a chance.
1. The Best Actual Brow Pencil
If you’re a fan of actual pencils you can sharpen manually, then you’ll love Luscious Cosmetics Brow Luxe Definer Pencil. It’s a vegan, cruelty-free product that is both sweat-proof and smudge-proof. And even though it’s a pencil, it comes with that good ole spoolie brush on the end to diffuse pigment. Just be careful with these pencils — since the tip is more rounded, they tend to distribute pigment a little heavier than normal. Use short strokes when applying, and you’ll be good to go.
Available shades: brunette, taupe, caramel, natural black, cool brunette, deep brunette
2. A Solid Liquid Option
If you love a bold, precise-looking brow, go with Music Flower Liquid Tattoo Eyebrow Pen. It applies in a liquid tint and has a forked applicator, which means you get a more micro-bladed look. And unlike other liquid pens, this one doesn’t smudge or smear. It’s guaranteed to last all day — no matter what happens.

3. A Pencil That Comes With Refills
If you love the idea of an eyebrow pencil you can refill — thus cutting back on wasteful packaging — then pick up HeyBeauty Eyebrow Pencil With Brow Brush. It’s got a diamond-shaped tip, so you can use it to fill in tight little nooks and crannies as well as sketch a full brow. And its spoolie on the end helps keep the hair in your brows groomed to perfection. Of course, it’s waterproof — so no rain, sweat, or water will muck up your brows.
Available shades: dark brown, light brown, black
4. A Pencil/Stencil Duo That Comes In A Multi-Color Three-Pack
If you’re new to filling in your brows, then the Maange Eyebrow Pencil Set is for you. It comes with four reusable stencils, so you can sketch the perfect brow every single time. It also comes with three brow pencils in varying shades: brown, black, and grey. The angled tip gives you amazing precision, while the spoolie helps distribute any wayward pigment. It doesn’t drag, and its waterproof formula ensures your brows are protected from the elements all day long. All of this, for only $10.
5. A Pencil With A Precision Tip
Some people prefer a precision tip, and in that case, Maybelline New York Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil is the best pencil for you. Its teeny, tiny tip helps you fill in sparse areas in a natural-looking way. And instead of a spoolie, it has a plastic comb on the end to push your brow hairs up and out. Like all the others on this list, this formula is fully waterproof.
Available shades: light brown, dark blonde, medium brown
