At 22, there’s a lot to love about rising star Shailene Woodley: She’s passionate about the environment, wears used clothes, and prefers bare feet to Louboutins. To add to that list: Woodley did her own stunts for her highly anticipated new film Divergent. “If you don’t get a few bumps and bruises when signing on to an action movie, you’re not doing something right,” she says.

In order to become Tinseltown’s newest action heroine, she turned to legendary stunt master Garret Warren, who has taught martial arts and fight choreography to A-list celebs like Jada Pinkett Smith, Jessica Alba, and The Rock. We went one-on-one with Warren for the inside scoop on how he transformed Woodley into fierce, fighting shape for her gun-toting, knife-throwing, butt-kicking role.

Shape: Why was it so important for Shailene to train specifically for this role?

Garrett Warren : Shailene’s character comes in and she’s not supposed to know how to fight-so that worked for us, because that’s who she is as a character. The sequences turned out to be interesting fights rather than blockbuster action. By the end of the movie, Shailene’s character is a well-oiled machine. She isn’t a superhero. She’s a real person who works hard yet has her weaknesses like anyone else.

Shape: We heard she did many of her own stunts. How dangerous were they?

GW: One of the hardest stunts was standing 35 feet in the air on the edge of a building with only a safety cable. One night in Chicago, she also climbed up the side of a Ferris wheel with 75-foot ladders. That’s why we did supersets, lots of reps, and few breaks. She needed endurance the entire day, every day.

Shape: Tell us more about the training.

GW: We’d do body movements like pushups, chin-ups, dips, squats, lunges, and plyometrics for 30 minutes, then we’d move into fight choreography for 30 minutes: jiu-jitsu, judo, close-quarter combat situations, krav maga, boxing, and muay Thai. After that we’d learn how to throw knives into targets. It was an intense bootcamp that involved shooting firearms and hand-to-hand fighting too. We started again five weeks before the movie started with the same routine, but we added weight work and functional training. We always did her whole body but different exercises each day.

Shape: What were some of your specific goals?

GW: We had to worry about not working out too heavily. The workouts weren’t for building muscle but rather for building the endurance for the dozens of takes of jumping off trains, climbing up ladders, and shooting guns.

Shape: What was the biggest change you saw in Shailene post-training?

GW: Her posture and confidence were amazing. She held herself really well when she first came in, but by the end she had such a strong posture.

Shape: Did you do anything special with her diet for the role?

GW: She was already eating healthy. She didn’t really eat candy or fried foods, or drink alcohol. I just encouraged her to eat smaller meals more frequently. We also tried to cut out salty foods so she wasn’t bloated on set.

Of late, Shailene has grown with the roles she has played on the big screen, “Divergent,” being her latest flick in the year 2014. She has been highly acclaimed for her performances in her other two movies “The Descendents” and “The fault in our Stars.”

The actress is known for her active lifestyle. She performs approximately 45- 50 minutes of Yoga everyday for many years now and to increase her agility.

Shailene does not go to the gym or believe in any school of thought when it comes to exercising. However, if a role calls for it, she never steps back. Shailene is also known to have done her own stunts for her movie, Divergent.

Shailene Woodley leads an extremely alternative lifestyle and follows a form of thinking based upon the Wise Woman Tradition, which is a New Age Concept that is believed to empower women. For her own body, Shailene goes foraging for wild food and collecting spring water.

As Shailene is mostly on the move her go- to healthy snack is whatever that is abundantly found locally. She is fond of seaweed and carries along the Three Lily Farm’s Spirulina Gomasio, made with hemp seeds, Incan spirulina, and organic onion granules, which she sprinkles over her food.

Whether it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner our Divergent star likes her food to always be in the cleanest and purest form. She visits the farmer’s market often, to gather her food and buy anything that is in season.

She also is a big believer in fermentation, which, she states, creates an abundance of probiotics in the body. Shailene always has at least one fermented food, like sauerkraut, pickled Korean kimchee, or the tangy drink kefir, with her every meal.

She always has three essential ingredients, Sauerkraut or kimchee, chilli garlic spice, and raw chocolate, the cocoa bean in its purest form, kept in her refrigerator or pantry at all times. While on set, Shailene packs her own breakfast, lunch and dinner.

She also carries along olive oil, seaweed and Spirulna Gomasia wherever she goes. Shailene listens to her body’s wants and eats whatever her body wants her to eat, whenever it wants her to eat. That is one healthy girl whom I’d like to follow. What about you?

If you’ve seen Divergent already (or even just the promos), you know that Shailene Woodley is one fit and powerful star. So it’s no surprise that she and the rest of the actors went through an insane training regimen to shape up for their roles.

Shailene and the other actors trained with fight coordinator J.J. Perry for a month before filming even began. He instructed them to do 20 minutes of cardio first thing in the morning at their hotel gym (so basically, you have no excuse not to stay fit while traveling—you might see a celeb at the fitness center!). Then Perry had them spend three hours a day working out and learning the fight choreography.

Sounds intense, right? Here’s a closer look at how those three hours broke down:

The Warm-Up
First, Shailene and the others warmed up with light jogging and stretching. Then they did four three-minute rounds of jump rope, which was great prep for the fighting footwork they would be doing next.

Martial Arts
Shailene’s martial arts training consisted of striking, hitting punching bags, low kicks, and other fight choreography. “Shailene had to fight more than anyone in the movie,” says Perry. “And we were detailing her striking work because it needed to look like there was a progression in the movie .”

Strength Training: Legs and Abs
Perry had the actors do the strength-training portions of their workouts together to mimic the fact that they were a class of new recruits in the movie. “I made it like a basic training,” says Perry. For legs they did squats while standing back-to-back and linking arms. Then they did squat kicks and low kicks and were instructed to aim within one foot of their partner. “It teaches you that when you get fatigued, you need to still not hit each other,” says Perry. Crunches also became a team activity, as Perry would have them link legs or face a partner in a sit-up chain. And of course, no workout would be complete with plenty of burpees.

Strength Training: Arms
For arms, Shailene did pushups (including several variations of pushups) and as many pullups as possible. “We put her in the ‘up position’ in the beginning and had her hold it as long as she could, then let herself down slowly,” says Perry. “Then she developed the strength to do the pullups. (That smart strategy is the same one featured in our six-week chinup challenge!) And of course, Shailene rocked those pullups. “Her work ethic is what got her through it, and I was not easy on them,” says Perry.

So how did our girl Shailene do overall? “Out of everyone, she worked the hardest,” says Perry. “She had a long way to go to get there and she went there—and went a little further than the rest of them.” All we have to say is, we’re insanely impressed!

For Shailene Woodley’s latest role, she has entered an elite group of actors, like Charlize Theron and Christian Bail, who have drastically altered their bodyweight for a role.

Her new film, Adrift, which is based on the real-life story of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, follows a couple who are left at sea whilst sailing. Woodley’s character is adrift for an extended period of time, meaning she has to survive on minimal food.

This meant, for the sake of authenticity, the 26 year-old felt compelled to quickly lose weight for her final scenes, and the Divergent star has revealed how she did it.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, the Big Little Lies alum explained, ‘For the last two weeks I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day—350 calories. It was f*cking miserable.’

To handle this extremely drastic calorie deficiency, she took to the bottle, ‘I can’t sleep when I’m hungry, so I would have a glass of wine to basically pass the f*ck out.’

Obviously, this is not a diet that anyone should look to for healthy weight loss, and we imagine Woodley was closely supervised by doctors during filming.

And, the actress wasn’t the only one who was taking the job seriously.

‘This whole process was as beautiful as it was taxing,’ Woodley previously told E! News. ‘Every time that would show up with a big smile on his face and not complain at hour 16 or not complain when we were seasick or not complain when something went awry—not only did it inspire me, but it inspired the whole crew to stand up and work harder.’

Sounds like and ass-kicking movie to us.

Adrift is a film based on the inspiring true story of two sailors who set out to journey across the ocean from Tahiti to San Diego. As’s “resident hippie” (as one of my co-workers labeled me just last week), I thought I might be up to the task—after all, I prefer to forego Western medicine (even Advil) for herbal remedies, find the bounties of nature to be completely astounding, and, like the actress, I simply have a passion for the environment. So I read up on all of her interviews, formulated a schedule that I imagined might be similar to that of hers, and prepared to follow it to the T. Was I looking forward to consuming clay and fending for myself in the wilds of Central Park? Well, not particularly. But I, like the rest of the world, was fascinated by the prospect, and it didn’t seem like too much of a leap for me. Was I right? And more importantly, would channeling Shailene bring me the same “awakening moment” with the universe that she says to have experienced when filming The Descendants in Hawaii? Only the day ahead would tell:

8AM: I wake—not quite with the sun, as I had hoped—but with a bit of trepidation at the day ahead of me. I brusquely toss all skepticism aside, and try to embody Shailene’s attitude apparent: I let a calm, zen smile form on my face, and try to imagine how she is starting her day. With gratitude for the earth and life, perhaps? Or is she already on her way to the mountains to collect her spring water? (I was hoping to do the same, but apparently every regulated mountain spring that is in feasible commuting distance from NYC is no longer open to the public.)

8:05AM: I sleepily resist, on instinct, my first temptation of the morning: to reach for my computer. Shailene does not even have a cell phone, so I will shelve my technology as well. Besides, maybe after spending my days squinting at a screen for a living, a detox could do me some good. I envision myself living in the moment and becoming one with the world. It ain’t Kauai, but maybe there is some kind of cosmic force in Brooklyn.

8:10AM: I leave bed to begin my morning routine as I have read that Shailene does: With the ancient practice of oil pulling. I pick my poison—organic, unrefined sesame oil, à la Shailene—and groggily gargle it while I begin to make my breakfast. It’s not bad (and I’ve done it with coconut oil before), and when I spit, I do swear my teeth feel cleaner.

8:15AM: I will not lie: When I first decided to channel Shailene for a day, I immediately Googled “Does Shailene Woodley drink coffee?” She does—Bulletproof-style, which, for those who aren’t in the health craze know, involves blending Bulletproof brand coffee with expensive grass-fed butter and coconut oil, mimicking ancient Tibetan tradition (though, let’s be frank: I seriously doubt that Tibetan monks have ever insisted on using Kerrygold). I am vegan, so I forego the butter, but blend my Trader Joe’s brew with coconut oil and a bit of almond milk. It’s very frothy.

8:20AM: I have obtained mushroom chaga powder, which Shailene consumes daily, and was responsible for Miles Teller’s kissing scene complaints when they were filming The Spectacular Now. “It tastes like dirt,” told New York Magazine. “But I like the taste of dirt.” I can’t say the same—even the teaspoon blended in my morning smoothie gives the beverage the subtle yet definitely apparent undertone of soil, and even I, with my natural-erring ways, cannot imagine having a crockpot of this stuff as tea going all the livelong day (which is exactly what Shailene does).

9:15AM: It’s the moment of truth and infamy: I will eat clay. (“I mean, I’m healthy, but that is some next level shit,” says my roommate. Yes, yes it is.) I mix it per the directions with eight ounces of water, and as I gaze at my mason jar of muddy-looking liquid, I kind of wish I could just take the 1/2 teaspoon of clay on its own and get it over with. I begin to sip, and it’s about as appetizing as you would imagine drinking clay is.

9:30AM: Using Shailene’s favorite facial cleanser from Living Libations—made from sea buckthorn, it’s 100% natural and sourced from small farmers—I remove all residue of last night’s makeup from my face, since the actress insists that she doesn’t wear any cosmetics on the day to day. The cleanser smells fantastic and leaves my skin glowing. In fact, I like it so much that I think I’ll add it to my daily routine.

9:45AM: I’m still working on that clay drink. (Yes, I’m being a baby about it.) I multitask and concoct my own toothpaste, using a recipe that I assume is close to that of Shailene’s. The ingredients include more clay, a calcium powder, coconut oil, xylitol, and peppermint essential oil, and I mix them into a green-tinged paste. It is far less appetizing than drinking the clay.

9:50AM: Feeling slightly nauseous and smelling of patchouli, I slip into Shailene’s uniform of choice: leggings and a drapey top. I forego her Vibram Five Fingers for my hole-y Toms.

10AM: I bike the mile to my local farmer’s market. As the breeze blows in my hair, the nausea has been replaced with serenity. It’s probably just the glorious, 75-degree June morning, but for the first time today I feel positively at peace with the world.

10:30AM: Fourth wall be damned: Riding on my biking high, I greet our photographer with a hug at the farmer’s market. She looks slightly startled, but then again, I assume this is also the case with the dozens of strangers Shailene greets in the same fashion. I peruse the local produce with a beady eye out for beets, since Shailene used the red vegetable’s juice as a lip stain at the Golden Globes in February. If I end up going out for a farm-to-table dinner tonight, I would like to have the option to put something on my face—even if it is beet juice. Alas; apparently beets are not in season, and I settle for some gorgeous, very expensive oyster mushrooms. (Shailene likes mushrooms, as evidenced by the dirt I ate for breakfast this morning.)

11AM: I stroll into Fort Greene Park, hoping to find a secluded place to meditate and be one with nature. After a few minutes, I happen upon a group of squirrels, and as I make eye contact with one, it is not only unperturbed, but actually comes closer. I conclude that my previous suspicions were correct: Shailene is the real-life, 21st century version of an animal-beloved Disney princess. Or, too many people have been feeding the damn squirrels. Anyway, I am barefoot in the park, because that is the Shailene way.

12PM: Shailene likes yoga. I like yoga. Hence, I go to yoga.

1:30PM: After 75 minutes of glorious sun salutations, I jaunt into a thrift store around the corner. Shailene insists that she does not buy any of her clothes new. I don’t buy anything after browsing, however, mostly because nothing tickles my fancy but also because lately Shailene has only been living out of a suitcase with a pair of leggings and two pairs of jeans. And, I assume, her Vibram Five Fingers.

2:15PM: After an inconsequential lunch of groceries from Trader Joe’s (she shops there, so it’s okay), I write a letter, since Shailene loves writing letters and does it every day. I write to my friend Liz in LA, since she is an actress who I feel will understand my method and gets me in general. Dare I say that she is the Brie Larson to my Shailene?

2:30PM: As I set out to drop my letter in the mailbox, I remember that my rent is six days late. (Thanks Shailene!) However, this also makes me feel as if I’m not fully playing my role, since Shailene does not have a home and prefers to couch surf. Ah, well. I’m still sticking it to the man.

2:45PM: I have to run, since I have a very important appointment to forage for food in Central Park. But first, I dash up to my sunbathed roof for some Vitamin D me time.

4:30PM: Foraging in Central Park is actually against regulation, save for under the jurisdiction of Wildman Steve Brill, who leads tours around its northern paths for those curious about the edibleness of the vegetation. He is a total character, and I am astounded by his expertise (not to mention that of his 10-year-old daughter and “assistant,” Violet). He informs me on everything from the PMS-alleviating benefits of mugwort to identifying a harmless looking plant that could kill me four ways. I sample both the vegetation and his own recipes that he pulls out of his backpack, which include ridiculously delicious curried sunflower seeds and a spin off kale chips made from plantain leaves, which are not the banana relative but the exact plant that you pulled from your parent’s front lawn as a grumpy pre-teen and the star of weed killer commercials. (They are delicious.) When I not only voluntarily chew on a birch twig but actually enjoy its minty flavor, I wonder if I’m just still traumatized from the green, gritty “toothpaste” I used this morning or if I really am turning into Shailene.

7PM: After bidding Adieu to Steve and Violet, I take the trip back to Brooklyn with a backpack full of “dinner.” (Without any attempt to hide the disgust on her face, one lady on the subway blatantly asks me, “You’re going to eat that?”) Still pretty satiated from all the sampling uptown, I make a light salad with my bounty, and it’s not half bad. Then again, I’ve grown my own vegetables in the past, and I know that anything tastes one hundred times better when it’s literally the fruit of your own labor.

8PM: I chase dinner with a soothing mug of pine needle tea—a favorite of Shailene’s—which I happened to already have on hand. I am not kidding.

8:30PM: Though my energy is fading fast (it’s tiring to be Shailene!), I rally to partake in one of her favorite activities: fermenting things. I would like to spend the month of July sipping kombucha, so I dive into the beginning stages of brewing (it takes more than a month for anything drinkable to come to fruition). Shailene doesn’t drink, but home-brewed kombucha naturally produces a tiny bit of alcohol. Things are about to get wild, people. (In 4-6 weeks.)

9:30PM: I collapse into bed, utterly exhausted. And in the minutes before I drift off, I reflect on my day:

When I woke up that morning, I was extremely conscious of what I was supposed to be doing and how offbeat it was (wasn’t that the point of doing it?). Yet, in spite of all the sarcasm (and yes, whining), by the day’s end, while I was still certainly aware of everything I was doing, the quirkiness of it all just didn’t really matter. Instead, I noted that after a day free from technology, the constant chatter of being “tuned in” had at last subsided. I felt healthy, and yes, one with nature (which, let’s face it, is a feat in the confines of New York City). This was what mattered. And that’s what I think really encapsulates the authenticity of Shailene.

She recently said that she doesn’t understand why people compare her to Jennifer Lawrence. I do: It’s because unlike many of their glossy, publicly over-rehearsed peers, they both display real, relatable behaviors and quirks. But I think the fact that Shailene can’t understand their relativity is the telling difference between the two: Where with every meme-worthy silly face or red carpet stumble, J.Law is very vocal about how “weird” and “awkward” she is, Shailene just does what works for her. Sure, as evidenced by all the interviews and actions cited here, she has no qualms about sharing it with the world, but she doesn’t seem focused on our perception of her. That is authenticity, and that was the conclusion I came to after living like her for a day. We’re quick to make fun, but she remains outwardly happy and unapologetic, and if her habits aren’t hurting anyone (actually, they do quite the opposite), who are we to judge? You keep doing you, Shailene. And while I probably won’t chase my breakfast with a glass of clay ever again, I think I’ll do what I want to do—no matter what the peanut gallery thinks.

And, I will be using that face wash on the daily.

It has taken 35 years for Tami Oldham’s compelling survival-at-sea story to make it to the movies, but as I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), it was worth the wait. Sure we have seen similar kinds of stories like this, where one person must face the odds alone against Mother Nature, but when it is well done, as this one is, it is worth taking the voyage.


At 23, Tami (Shailene Woodley) gets the opportunity to sail a yacht from Tahiti to California with her boyfriend Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin), but the vessel rides directly into the eye of a horrendous hurricane and she must find a way for her and the injured and virtually immobile Sharp to survive against all odds alone at sea on a crippled boat. Oldham’s memoir has been brought to the screen in high dramatic fashion by director Baltasar Kormakur (Everest, Two Guns), who lets his heavy-action-movie past subside to tell the story as largely a romantic drama set against the unpredictability of nature. It is tough to pull this kind of thing off since in real life their boat drifted for 41 days and that can get kind of monotonous. A key story device involving the injured boyfriend helps, but Kormakur and screenwriters Aaron Kendall, Jordan Kendall and David Branson Smith also find to way to weave in and out of flashbacks in a structure that not only fills in the details of the romantic relationship that flowers in Tahiti but also in leading up to their catastrophe on the open water. The film is able to build suspense based on anticipation of what will happen even after initially opening with the aftermath of the storm, which then leads into the first of the flashbacks. A couple of unexpected twists help enormously.

It also is admirable that the director ruled out shooting the many water sequences in a tank, filming instead on real open-water locations off Fiji and New Zealand. He has much experience and fondness for these kinds of stories, especially a previous sea-survivor film, The Deep, which became Iceland’s Oscar entry in 2012. Clearly he loves putting his actors through the ringer.

With that in mind we can be thankful it has Woodley throwing herself hook, line and sinker into perhaps her most challenging role yet and emerging triumphant. Yes, the romantic angle between her and Claflin smacks of the kind of thing YA novels thrive on. But this is no YA story — rather it’s one of courage, fortitude and the will to survive. It takes awhile to get fully to that point, but when it sinks in, Woodley is there to guide us all the way. As Tami, she is a young woman who grew up with a love and special knack for navigating uncharted waters, and Woodley captures that passion effortlessly. Claflin’s character, who gets severely injured during the hurricane, has far less to do in driving the action, but he’s clearly there for eye candy for the large female audience this film is aimed at.

Adrift has been gorgeously photographed by the great cinematographer Robert Richardson, and his experience shows every step of the way. The CGI’d hurricane also is impressively done but is saved largely until the end. This is more a character study of a woman fighting nature and using everything she has in her to do it. Producers are Kormakur, the Kandell brothers, Woodley and Ralph Winter. STX releases it today.

Big Little Lies actress Shailene Woodley portrays real-life sailor Tami Oldham Ashcraft in the new movie Adrift. Released on June 1, the film is inspired by true events experienced by Ashcraft and her husband when they were caught in a storm on their yacht. When Ashcraft’s husband was left incapacitated by the struggles of life on the open sea, Ashcraft was forced to sail them both 700 miles across the ocean to get to the nearest land.

As you can imagine, that kind of struggle wears on you. Ashcraft said she survived only on non-perishables the couple had previously stored on the boat, and most of her meals throughout the journey consisted of sardines and Spam. Of course, when Woodley was cast in the role, she had to replicate the physical deterioration Tami actually experienced—and, contrary to her caption on this Instagram, it wasn’t easy.

According to the 26-year-old actress, in order to shed pounds for the role, she skipped dinner every night and ate nothing but “a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day.” She also said she couldn’t sleep when she was hungry, so she’d drink wine at night in order to “pass the f*** out.” Um, who wouldn’t?!

Although Woodley’s preparation for the film made her “miserable,” she said it was all worth it in the end because she felt very close to Ashcraft’s story. She remembered reading about it when the catastrophe first occurred and recalled sobbing as she learned what had happened. Another saving grace for the actress was her costar, Sam Claflin. “I don’t know that I could do it without Sam. We both really were there for one another in our moments of extreme exhaustion and hunger,” she said.

Luckily, when filming was over, Woodley went right back to eating a healthy diet. She’s now back in action, filming another season of Big Little Lies alongside stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz and Meryl Streep. We’ll be watching Woodley in both roles (and drinking our own glasses of wine as we imagine what it must have been like for her to go on that extreme diet).
