McDonald’s are releasing a mini McFlurry with HALF the calories

22 June 2018, 11:34 | Updated: 23 August 2018, 16:58

The new ice-creams are here to stay, but there are some limited edition flavours that sound delicious.

The McFlurry has been a staple of McDonald’s menus across the UK since 2000 – and now it’s getting a revamp.

We’re always excited when new flavours are released and regardless of brain freeze, will scoff the thing down with ease after a Big Mac meal.

But rather than simply launching a new flavour, McDonald’s are introducing a new size of the frozen treat in time for summer.

So if the regular size McFlurry is a bit too much ice cream to handle, you might be interested in this.

The fast food chain are launching a McFlurry just under half the size of the regular version which will cost a mere 59p for a 75g pot and will contain 150 calories compared to the usual 320 calories.

The new mini McFlurry’s will be available in the standard flavours such as Dairy Milk, Oreo and Crunchie as well as two new limited edition flavours; Flake and Flake raspberry.

But if you like the sound of the new flavours then you’ll want to get in there fast because they will only be available from 27th June to 7th August.

But that’s not the only change to McFlurry’s on the menu. If you don’t struggle to eat the usual sized McFlurry then you may be disappointed to hear that the regular size one will be reduced from 170g to 150g but the price will also be shrunk to 89p instead of 99p.

Limited edition flavour McFlurry’s will now cost £1.29 instead of £1.39.

McDonald’s New Soft Serve Isn’t As Healthy As It Seems

Earlier this season, McDonald’s decided that they were joining the healthy ice cream movement. The fast-food chain has recently been making some major changes to their recipes — from ridding their McNuggets of artificial ingredients and preservatives to swapping out trans-fat-laden margarine for real butter in their breakfast items — to keep up with customers’ demands for cleaner ingredients. Darci Forrest, Senior Director of menu innovation, recently announced that soft-serve was the newest updated item.

In a company statement, Forrest explained that McDonald’s has “been raising the bar on serving delicious food that our customers can feel good about eating.” But if you’re anything like us here at Eat This, Not That!, you were also probably wondering exactly how high they were raising that bar.

In the same statement, McDonald’s explained that they decided to nix artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives from the soft serve recipe. There’s no doubt about it, making these changes is a big deal. But is the new version as good as it sounds? Curious to see if the dessert changes would be just as stellar as the rest, we decided to compare the new soft serve recipe to the one McDonald’s served up in 2015.

McDonald’s Soft Serve: Then Vs. Now

Comparing Ingredients

Old Vanilla Soft Serve Ingredients

Milk, Sugar, Cream, Nonfat Milk Solids, Corn Syrup Solids, Mono- and Diglycerides, Guar Gum, Dextrose, Sodium Citrate, Artificial Vanilla Flavor, Sodium Phosphate, Carrageenan, Disodium Phosphate, Cellulose Gum, Vitamin A Palmitate.

New Vanilla Soft Serve Ingredients

Milk, Sugar, Cream, Corn Syrup, Natural Flavor, Mono and Diglycerides, Cellulose Gum, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Vitamin A Palmitate.

It was about time the chain dropped the long list of chemicals. Sodium phosphate and disodium phosphate — preservatives typically used to keep meats tender and moist — have been implicated in higher risks of heart disease, osteoporosis, and kidney health issues when consumed in large doses, according to a review in the Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc Journal.

The Golden Arches also switched to natural vanilla flavor from artificial, which isn’t as much of a monumental move as you’d think. It is somewhat comforting knowing that natural vanilla is made from bacterial fermentation of rice bran whereas artificial vanilla flavor often comes from a chemically-treated byproduct of paper manufacturing called lignin, according to Michigan State University.

Finally, they rid their recipe of two sweeteners — corn syrup solids and dextrose (replacing one with plain-old corn syrup) — and tossed out nonfat milk solids.

Mickey D’s may have skimmed down the chemicals. But as for flat-belly friendly? It’s still not your best option. To our surprise, this dessert got a bit more waist-widening. The recipe changes tacked on an additional 30 calories, 0.5 gram of both fat and saturated fat and 10 milligrams of sodium.

We were most surprised that even though McDonald’s switched from having three sources of sweeteners to two, they managed to increase the ice cream’s sugar count by 4 grams.

Moral of the story: we’re all for the fact that the Golden Arches are ridding their menu of artificial ingredients and preservatives, but we hope they will also focus on the nutritional makeup of the foods in the future. So while this recipe change is good, don’t let this soft serve’s cleaner ingredient list act as an excuse to order a second cone.

McDonald’s Caught Lowballing Nutrition Numbers

McDonald’s greatly understates the serving size—and therefore the fat and calorie content—for its Vanilla Reduced-Fat Ice Cream Cones, according to a survey of five Washington, D.C. McDonald’s outlets by the non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).

McDonald’s web site only offers nutrition information for a 90-gram ice cream cone that lists 150 calories and 3 grams of saturated fat. But CSPI researchers found two sizes on sale in Washington, DC, and even the smaller size exceeded McDonald’s official size by 49 percent, averaging 134 grams. The average “small” cone would have 225 calories and 4.5 grams of saturated fat, or 22 percent of the recommended Daily Value for saturated fat, according to CSPI.

The larger ice cream cones purchased by CSPI exceeded McDonald’s lone listed size by 99 percent, averaging 179 grams. The average large ice cream cone would have twice the calories and fat of the size listed on the McDonald’s web site. The six grams of saturated fat in a large McDonald’s reduced-fat ice cream cone would provide about 30 percent of the Daily Value of saturated fat.

“This would present a real problem for dieters who are trying to avoid obesity or heart disease, and are relying solely on McDonald’s web site for accurate nutrition information,” said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson. “It’s surprising that a major restaurant chain would provide such inaccurate information.”

Why You Should Never Order A McFlurry At McDonald’s

If you’ve decided to get a McFlurry from McDonald’s, you know that you’re in for a delicious treat. Regardless of if you prefer Oreo pieces or M&M’s in your McFlurry, everyone knows that the signature dessert is one of the best things on the Mickey D’s menu. But, it seems like the McFlurry machines NEVER WORK! We did some research and found out why it’s so hard to get a McFlurry nowadays. We also found some pretty alarming things that will make you never want to order one again…

One of the reasons the McFlurry machine is never working is because it hasn’t been cleaned properly. Though this may seem like an easy fix, former Mickey D’s employee Becca Jansen says that’s not an easy job, at all. “Cleaning these machines takes HOURS,” she told “I mean it, these old machines can take 4 hours to clean. The reason? It has a preprogrammed cycle that it must complete, and if it senses you did something wrong, it will start over.”

She also revealed that not every employee has been properly trained on how to clean, or fix, the machines. So, if the machine breaks during a shift where no specialized employees are present, it can’t be fixed until they arrive. But most of the time, the machine hasn’t even been turned on yet, according to Kelsey Stiegman, another former McDonald’s employee.

“They probably say they can’t make because the machine is cleaning,” she revealed. “If they say it’s broken, it’s probably because they cleaned it already so they’re making an excuse that the customer will understand.”

Wow, who knew there were so many factors involved in this? If you’re lucky enough to have chosen a McDonald’s with a “working” McFurry machine, there’s still one thing that might stop you from getting the classic frozen treat: its nutrition facts. One regular-sized M&M McFlurry has 630 calories, 22 grams of fat, 77 grams of carbs, and 200 milligrams of sodium. Its Oreo counterpart may only have 510 calories and 17 grams of fat, but it’s also got 60 grams of carbs and 280 milligrams of sodium. Yikes!

Indulging in a McDonald’s McFlurry can be a sweet treat on its own. But, if you order it with one of its signature burgers, sandwiches, and fries, then you’re looking at a lot of calories, fat, and sodium.

Remember to enjoy your McFlurry in moderation to stay within your healthy recommended daily calorie intake. Yeah, this is definitely going to be tough…

Best & Worst McFlurry at McDonald’s

You know that one wrong choice can erase the calories you burned in a workout or two, but there’s good news: some indulgences aren’t as bad as you might think. Enter the McFlurry, McDonalds’ ice cream dessert swirled with M&Ms or Oreos. The right choice can fit nicely into your cheat day; the wrong one can set you up for a cheat week.

It’s no shock that a snack-size dessert is a better choice than its regular-size counterpart, but in the case of the McFlurry, you might be surprised to see how many calories you’re saving. Swapping a regular M&M for the one-third-smaller snack-size Oreo version saves you 310 calories, or the equivalent of a cheeseburger or a medium order of French fries!

Mickey D’s most consistent McFlurry mix-ins are Oreos and M&Ms, although special flavors pop up from time to time. Surprisingly, the cookies are the better choice in either size. (Putting the snack sizes head-to-head, the Oreo McFlurry has 90 fewer calories and 25% less fat than the M&M version.) Alas, while studies involving M&Ms have taught us various ways to stay slim, none of the conclusions involved scarfing them in McDonald’s ice cream.
