Tried and Tested: 15 Kiss-Proof Lipsticks That REALLY Last All Day

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, we want a beauty look that’s filled with romance, romance and more romance. Something that would make Cupid jealous. But we can’t let the pretty pink and red shades distract us from the most important thing: a makeup look that will stay put, especially during those oh-so-romantic moments.

Lipstick smudged on your partner’s face is never a good look and the main reason why women often forgo bold lips on date night in favor of sultry eyes. You don’t need to ditch your favorite sexy lippie, though. The shelves are filled with transfer-proof, long-wear lipsticks that will stay put from your first celebratory toast to that goodnight kiss.

We tested all the best long-wear lipsticks on the market and these lived up to their promise:

  1. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Color
  2. Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Lipcolor
  3. Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick
  4. Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipstick
  5. Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick Metallized
  6. Nyx Cosmetics Full Throttle Lipstick

Scroll through to see more of the best long-lasting lipsticks that won’t migrate during your next smooch session.

There’s nothing more disappointing than covering your pout in a gorgeous lip shade only to find the color has disappeared not long after you’ve applied it. Where did it go?!

To avoid spending money on fast-fading lipsticks and glosses, we asked beauty editors — the women whose job it is to road test cosmetics all day long — to recommend their favorite long-wearing finds. From their lips to yours, here are there favorites.

Liquid Lipsticks

1. MAC Cosmetics Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in “Feels So Grand,” $21, Nordstrom

Also available for $21 at ULTA.

“During the last season of HBO’s ‘Girls,’ Jemima Kirke wore a lipstick that I became obsessed with tracking down. It wasn’t just the color — a rich, deep ruby red — but the texture, which looked like velvet. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one, because she wrote about it on Twitter and I promptly got the shade! One of the bonuses was that this stuff does not transfer at all — not on my coffee cup, my water bottle or my clothes. It actually takes effort to remove at night,” said Jamie Rosen, contributing editor at Town & Country.

2. Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor, $10, Walgreens

Also available for $10 at ULTA.

“This wax-free, moisturizing formula should slide right off, but it doesn’t. Instead it leaves a velvety finish that isn’t drying — and will last through multiple drinks, dinner and a goodbye kiss. (Bonus: It smells like a hint of vanilla.) My favorite shades are ‘Love,’ a modern red, and ‘Devotion,’ a grown-up, flirty pink,” shared Jackie Danicki, beauty columnist at the Observer.

3. Maybelline Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid in “Sinful Stone,” $5, Amazon

Also available for $9 at Walgreens.

“Gray lipstick?? Yes! It’s the ultimate power shade! Instant cool for just $6. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s shockingly flattering. Plus, it adds instant polish to any look. I’ll also dab a bit on my lids for a quick smudgy eye. A fellow beauty editor shared it with me at an early morning work breakfast, and when I saw her that night at another work event, the shade was still going strong on both of us,” said Emily Dougherty, editor-in-chief at New Beauty.

4. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in “Perla,” $22, Amazon

Also available for $22 at ULTA.

“Lately, I’ve been obsessed with this liquid lipstick. It’s the perfect soft pink for my skin tone. It doesn’t dry out my lips at all and it stays on for hours — definitely my everyday go-to, especially if I’m not trying to make a statement with my look,” said Carly Cardellino, beauty director at

5. Giorgio Armani Beauty Beauty Lip Magnet Liquid Lipstick, $38, Sephora

Also available for $38 at Nordstrom.

“Truth be told, I’m a lip balm girl. I don’t like the feeling of anything goopy on my lips. But for a big night out where I want a dramatic lip look, I reach for this liquid lipstick that comes in a zillion gorgeous shades (I particularly love their reds) and lasts for hours. When it wears off, my lips are left stained, which, when covered with a swipe of my trusty lip balm, also looks fab,” said Alexandra Parnass, executive editorial director for beauty at Hearst.

As beauty director at Martha Stewart Living and Martha Stewart Weddings, Melissa Milrad Goldstein agreed.

“I’ve tried many liquid lipsticks but this is the one I return to time and time. It’s weightless and the applicator is perfectly shaped to line and fill lips with precision. I always swipe it on the edge of the bottle to take off any excess product, then build the intensity of the color. It’s smudge-proof and lasts, but the tone mellows out a bit as the day goes on, and I like that about it,” said Milrad Goldstein.

Matte Lipsticks

6. Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipstick in “Tell Laura,” $34, Nordstrom

Also available for $34 at Bloomingdales.

“Here’s how I justify the price of this lipstick: Whether I’m wearing it with a T-shirt or something I’ve frantically grabbed from the back of my closet, people suddenly think I’ve made a real effort. (Fools!) This long-lasting lipstick always does the trick: a velvety orange-red and a dead ringer for my favorite (discontinued) shade,” said Jessica Matlin, beauty director at Harper’s Bazaar.

7. NARS Semi Matte Lipstick in “Heat Wave,” $28, Sephora

“I’ve never met a red lipstick that can withstand more. Aside from being the most perfect orange-y red (people will compliment you all day long), it lasts through even the longest, most wine-filled dinners. Before I apply it, I like to wet my lips and wipe them with a towel to buff away any flakes, then I dab on a little balm. I wait 30 seconds, pat off the balm, then go in straight from the tube and I’m good to go for hours without any dryness or stiffness — unlike most long-lasting formulas,” said Marta Topran, beauty director at Cosmopolitan, Women’s Health and Seventeen.

8. MAC Lipstick in “Velvet Teddy,” $19, Nordstrom

Also available for $19 at ULTA.

“With my modestly sized lips, attempts at wearing anything more than my Burt’s Bees balm inadvertently ends up making me look like a 4-year-old who’s gotten into mommy’s makeup bag. But on the occasion when a little lip is called for (and called for to last), I lean toward a nude matte that I can apply, then blot and then never worry about again for the rest of the night. This shade is pigment-packed nudity, which sort of sounds like an oxymoron, but it works for me and my reluctant pout,” said Jane Larkworthy, a beauty columnist at

Lip Pencil

9. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in “Blindfold” and “Bahama,” $27, Sephora

Also available for $27 at Nordstrom and ULTA.

“I’m currently obsessed with these lip pencils — my fave shade of the moment is ‘Blindfold’ from the Charlotte Gainsbourg collection. They’re so easy to apply (I’ve been known to dab on my lip color in a moving taxi or on the subway, sans mirror), and truly last all day without feeling dry or looking cake-y. My trick is to dot the lip color on, then use a fingertip to blend color to edges, pressing pigment into my lips. This makes for a perfect flush of color, and if I want a more intense effect, I keep layering. Genius! I also love the shades ‘Endangered Red’ (a dark burgundy), ‘Dangerous Red’ (poppy) and ‘Dolce Vita’ (if I need a lasting nude). This last one is my go-to hue when I do on-camera stuff,” said Gwen Flamberg, executive editor of beauty and style at US Weekly.

“I’ve never fallen in love with anything from a limited-edition collection before, and now I understand why it’s almost not even worth it. This matte lip pencil (in the shade ‘Bahama’) is absolutely the most flattering rose I’ve ever found; (it’s) not too thin, not too thick, so it’s just right for applying without a mirror. I want to wear it every day,” said Alix Tunell, beauty writer for publications like Refinery29 and InStyle.

Lip Stains

10. Victoria’s Secret Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stain in “Adored,” $15, Walmart

Also available for $14 at Victoria’s Secret.

“While matte liquid lipsticks are all the rage, I’d never met one I loved — heck, even liked — until a makeup artist friend recommended this lip stain. Here’s how my experience with liquid lipsticks went: I’d see women (celebs, models, makeup artists) on Instagram slapping them on then flaunting smooth, matte, pillow-y pouts, but when I would try them, they made even the tiniest chapped skin flake look massive and literally felt like Saran wrap on my lips after five minutes in.

“I had just about given up on the trend when I tried a sexy rosy pink shade that looks like my natural lip color, only better. It went on super smooth (and stayed on that way), felt hydrating and lasted from the minute I applied it on the train ride into work at 7 a.m. until I removed my makeup at 11 p.m. (despite my iced latte, Diet Coke, hours of chatting with publicists and kissing my husband when I got home). One caveat: The sponge applicator deposits a lot of product, so be sure to wipe off the excess before applying it onto your lips. Swipe it on top and bottom lips, blot them together, then use your finger to tap it in for a more lived-in look,” said Heather Muir, beauty director at Real Simple and Health.

11. RMS Lip2Cheek in “Diabolique,” $36, Sephora

Also available for $36 at Nordstrom.

“Lately, I’ve been loving this lip and cheek stain. It’s not labeled long-wear, but because it contains such an intense pigment load (after all, it doubles as blush), I find it wears beautifully for hours. The color was handpicked for me by Rosemarie Swift, the line’s creator and muse, which meant a lot to me because she’s a true visionary.

“Because it’s quite matte, I like to sheer it out for day by applying it over lip balm and then use it full-strength at night,” said Didi Gluck, deputy editor for beauty and style at Shape.

Lip Gloss

12. Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss Moisturizing Glossimer, $30, Nordstrom

Also available for $30 at Macy’s.

“I sure as hell can’t afford a Chanel bag, but I can afford a $30 Chanel lip gloss. The best part of paying a little more for this lip gloss is that it has major staying power, and I don’t have to reapply it every five seconds. Better still, the colors are bright, vibrant and never gaudy.

“I love ‘Icing,’ a sheer pink, for the spring, while ‘Nectar’ is a bright orange-y red that looks sophisticated with an all-white dress on a hot summer night,” said Jacqueline Gifford, travel director at Travel & Leisure and Departures.

Sheer Lipstick

13. Kosas Lip Color in “Stardust,” $28, Bloomingdales

“My criteria for lip color is short, but nonnegotiable: I must be able to apply it without a mirror and it must stay intact through my morning commute, coffee and a.m. meetings. This one checks both of those boxes —it’s a warm rose that brightens up my face, layers nicely for more impact and fades evenly. I like to exfoliate my lips in the morning with a lip scrub right after the shower (a face wipe works, too), apply a nice hydrating lip balm, then let that soak in. On my way out, I grab my lipstick, which I leave in the key bowl, and apply it as I’m shuffling out the door, patting down the color so it doesn’t look too done. No mirror required,” said Simone Kitchens, senior editor of the Strategist at New York Magazine.

This story was originally published June 12, 2017.

Whether you’re loyal to a classic matte red or a soft pink hue, there’s a long-lasting lip color out there for you. The following 10 shades put the “stick” in lipstick.

The secret to being lazy but still glamorous is simple: a bright lipstick. However, if that lipstick gets smudged or wears down that trick can backfire on you in a major way. Lipstick smudges on mugs, napkins or on your partner’s face is never a good look. It’s actually one of the main reason women forgo a bold lip colour, too “high-maintenance”.

Classic lipsticks and stains are great, but the longest lasting of all lip products are liquid lipsticks. We’ve tested every one of these lippies and each will give you at least six hours (or more) with no touchups required.

1. Maybelline New York Superstay Matte
Countless brands have claimed wear-all-day colour but most fall short. This one totally lives up to its claim. Available in 10 shades, from nudes to neons, Maybelline New York Superstar Matte Ink says it lasts 16 hours of full-on saturated colour—and it does. It’s kind of crazy. It’s lasted through multiple meals, cups of coffee a bottle of water and a sweat-inducing spin class.

Maybelline New York Superstay Matte Ink, $12,

2. Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor
If you struggle to find a long lasting formula that won’t dry out your lips consider this one. Its moisturizing formula should slide right off, but it doesn’t. Instead it leaves a velvety finish that isn’t drying and will last through many drinks, dinner and a goodbye kiss.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor, $11 each,

3. Victoria’s Secret Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stain
This lipstick slides on super smooth, though you probably want to swipe wipe off the excess product on the sponge applicator before applying it onto your lips. Apply it on the top and bottom lips, then blot them together. If you want more of a stain effect use your finger to tap in the colour. It feels hydrating and last from the minute we applied until removed.

Victoria’s Secret Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stain, $14,

4. Still Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick
This was one of the first great liquid, long-wear lipsticks, and it still holds up to being one of the best. It goes on creamy and hugs lips with intense pigment that gives your look a strong statement. The Stila website says that it stays for up to 12 hours of continuos wear. The range has since grown and now it comes in matte, satin and thinner shades.

Still Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, $29,

5. Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipsticks
Don’t just take it from us on how great this lipstick is, because there are more than 4,600 five-star reviews on Sephora’s liquid lipstick. It’s super smooth, easy to apply, and comes in 40 different shades. The darker shade the better the staying power.

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipsticks, $18,

6. Fenty Beauty Stunner Lip Paint
If you’re looking for a bright red, look no further. Fenty Beauty’s (Rhianna’s beauty brand) Stunna Lip Paint only comes in this one shade (Uncensored) and its said to be universally flattering. Now, we haven’t tried it on the whole universe (I know, we’re slackers) but we’ve tried it on a multitude of different complexions and it really does look like the perfect matte red on everyone. In fact, it was hand-picked by Rihanna and obsessively tested to make sure it look incredible on everyone. The formula is lightweight and claims it will hang on for up to 12 hours. We should note that it does transfer every so slightly.

Fenty Beauty Stunner Lip Paint Long Wear Fluid Lip Colour, $24,

7. Nars Powermatte Lip Pigment
Nars’ Powermatte came out last summer, and it’s just so damn good. The liquid, almost water-light, formula is flexible, meaning it doesn’t dry out lips. Despite how lightweight it is it’s still super pigmented, and the doe foot applicator makes it really easy to make perfect lines around the edges of my lips.

Nars Powermatte Lip Pigment, $34,

8. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick
Ranging from petal pink to pitch black, the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick has one of the best shade selection in the game. The formula is so creamy but dries to a matte finish quickly—one coat and you’re good to go.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, $24,

9. NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream
Not only is each tube affordable, its available in 33 colours and feels very comfortable. Neither lipstick nor lip gloss, the matte lip cream is a new kind of lip colour that goes on silky smooth and sets to a matte finish.

NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream, $9,

10. M.A.C Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour
If you’re looking for high pigment, smooth application and colour that wears for up to eight-hours with no feathering or bleeding try a swipe of this Retro Matte from M.A.C.

M.A.C Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour, $25,

Matte Lipsticks: Why They’re So Popular!

Matte lipsticks are lipsticks that deliver pure pigment on the lips without a shiny finish. They have always been around, but their popularity exploded in 2015 when style icon Kylie Jenner revealed that the secret to her lush pout was a good MAC matte lipstick and liner. Following this, her followers started hunting down her favourite products to try to emulate her bold, overlined pout.

The demand was so high that Kylie ended up launching the Kylie cosmetics line, starting with a matte liquid lip kit that consistently sold out in its first few months. But some people weren’t too sold on the formula and started looking for the perfect matte. Soon, reformulated matte lipsticks at more affordable price points flooded the market.

Makeup brands have been offering mattes for years, but mattes were notoriously drying and uncomfortable on the lips. Some earlier formulas were even prone to caking, but that changed in 2015 when beauty guru Jeffree Star and tattoo artist Kat Von D came out with their cruelty-free matte liquid lipsticks. These lipsticks were easy to reapply and delivered bold colour in one swipe.

While lipsticks also came in glosses, satin bullets, or sheer tints; mattes remain popular because of their non-sticky, long stay formulas. They’re also a great contrast for very highlighted base makeup, and their no-shine look makes them perfect for the office.

If you’re worried that a matte might still be drying, that’s a thing of the past. Nowadays, matte lipsticks are much more hydrating, and all you need is a good lip balm to prevent chapping! Here are our seven standouts that are just as comfortable on the lips as a satin bullet!

There’s a reason why their scarlet Cruella remains a firm beauty editor favourite. This luxurious pencil comes in 33 shades, has excellent pigmentation and glides on comfortably. Unlike the average lip pencil or crayon, the NARS hybrid stick combines a pointed tip and creamy formula, so you can apply it precisely without any tugging on your lips.

3. Fenty Beauty’s Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Colour

A Waterproof Liquid Lipstick With Incredibly Rich Colour

Get it here for $AUD36

Fenty Beauty has become one of Sephora’s best-selling brands for a reason! They’re known for their incredible foundation and concealer range, but their lipsticks remain one of their top products. When Rihanna first teased the shade Uncensored, sceptics waved off her claims that it was the perfect red for every skin tone – until the reviews came in and beauty editors raved that it was their new Holy Grail.

The Stunna lip paint comes in eight shades. Famous for barely fading despite a whole day’s wear; it’s an absolute must in every makeup lover’s kit. Try Uncuffed for a hint of mauve all day, or stand out in inky black with Uninvited for a glam goth look.

4. Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream

A Silky Lipstick That Stays On For Hours!

Get it here for $AUD12.95

For many women, this was their OG matte lipstick. The Soft Matte lip creams are inexpensive, smell like marshmallows, and they can survive five hours with minimal transfer.

There are over 33 shades, from dark blue to warm coral. We recommend the best-selling MLBB Cannes, a universal pinky nude, or the muted mauve Rome, which looks dreamy on every skin tone!

5. L’Oréal Color Riche Matte Addiction Lipstick

This Drugstore Fave Delivers Colour With Every Coat

Get it here for $AUD18.49

Affordable but with solid staying power, the Color Riche Mattes can easily survive your coffee dates with minimal reapplication. Unlike liquid mattes that may be hard to layer, this traditional bullet lipstick doesn’t cake or clump when you swipe on a second coat. There are sixteen shades in all, but our absolute favourites are the glamorous scarlet Paris Cherry or the vampy wine Plum Tuxedo. They’re both guaranteed to make heads turn!

A Matte That (Gasp) Hydrates Your Lips!

Get it here for $AUD35

This lightweight product was designed by beauty guru Huda Kattan to stay on all day without leaving your lips parched. It’s a matte liquid lipstick packed with antioxidants to nourish your skin, and it’s transfer-free! It’s a little wet when applied, but it dries down quickly to a smooth, soft matte finish that you won’t even feel – that’s how comfortable the formula is! There are 25 shades, but our personal fave is the shade Bombshell, a rosy shade that’s perfect for effortless daytime looks.

7. Anastasia Beverly Hills Long-Wearing Matte Lipsticks

Full Pigment In A Luxe Finish That Won’t Budge

Get it here for $AUD39

This matte liquid lipstick has a rounded tip and flat double-sided applicator for even, precise lines. Cruelty-free, practically weightless, and in 45 shades, you’re sure to find your dream shade in the Anastasia line. Their smudge-proof coverage is also easy to layer, which has made it a staple in many makeup artists’ kits. The terracotta Ashton and peachy Dolce are two of our favourites from them!

There’s A Matte Lipstick Out There For Everyone

The effortless glamour of a matte finish really completes a look, and it’s certainly a lot less fuss than picking your hair out of sticky gloss! Whether you’re a makeup newbie or a beauty junkie, a good matte is a must-have. The best matte lipstick for you is just a lip swatch away!

Our advice? Get a tester for any of these seven and see how they last through the day – you’ll see why we’re so obsessed with them!

RELATED: How To Make Your Makeup Last All Day

  • Lip Maestro Matte Nature Liquid Lipstick, £31, Giorgio Armani
Beautifully pigmented and velvety soft, this collection is inspired by shades from nature, the plush formula applies effortlessly and stays put all day.

  • Barepro Longwear Lipstick, £20, Bareminerals
Surprisingly long-wearing for a product that’s packed with minerals, it doesn’t budge for hours on end and the colour pay off is unreal. It’s impossible to pick a favourite colour, but we think ‘Saffron’ will be our most-used this autumn.

  • Le Rouge Crayon De Couleur Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon, £31, Chanel
If it’s long-wear you’re after, Chanel have absolutely nailed their latest matte formula. It glides on like silk, but dries to a powdery finish that does. not. budge. But unlike other mattes that may ball and crack as the day goes on, this one stays smooth and comfortable (even after eating and drinking).

  • Rouge d’Armani Matte Lipstick in ‘Nightberry’, £30, Giorgio Armani
Nothing says winter is here quite like a grey knit jumper matched with a deep berry lip. This one will be our go-to for the season – think bold colour in one swipe and a magnetic bullet that satisfies at every closure.

  • Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Saw-C, £16, Fenty Beauty

The Fenty matte lipsticks are really long-wearing (can survive multiple cups of tea) and Saw-C is a show-stopping orange on all skin tones. We love the slim bullet too because it means we can carry multiple shades at a time.

  • Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Pink Bliss, £5.99, Rimmel London

This is the perfect MLLB (my lips but better) shade for light and cool skin tones.

  • Liquid Matte in Trophy Wife, £18, Huda Beauty

This berry liquid lipstick is an ideal autumn shade. Be careful when applying, as once it’s on it won’t budge.

  • Matte Lip Kit in Koko-K, £20, Kylie Cosmetics

We coudn’t forget the queen of lip kits now could we? Koko-K is our favourite nude shade from the original collection.

  • Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo, £17.50, Mac Cosmetics

Ruby Woo – possibly the most iconic of Mac’s shade and the most comfortable matte formula for long-lasting wear.

  • Matte Revolution in Pillowtalk, £24, Charlotte Tilbury
Even we found it hard to get our hands on Pillowtalk – the universal nude lipstick that sold out in seconds.

  • Kiss Kiss Matte in Spicy Burgundy, £27.50, Guerlain

This lippy packs a pigment punch. The finish is more on the satin side and the colour payoff is next level. They’re quite comfortable to wear as they’re not super-matte matte, and the longevity will get you through the day with minimal touch-ups.

  • Matte Lip Paint in Heartbreaker, £4.99, Barry M

A big win for such a small price – Barry M’s lip paint lipsticks glide on so smoothly. Be sure to prep your lips with a scrub and balm to avoid the bold colour settling into cracks. For a stronger matte finish, try the liquid lip paints.

  • YSL Beaute Rouge Pur Couture The Mats in Wood on Fire, £26,
This pretty rosewood colour glides on easily, feels as comfortable as a balm, but gives a fully fledged suede finish. You get all the colour pay-off minus the potential dehydration of a classic bullet lippy.

  • Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Bing Matte, £17,
A clean matte red can be both classic and ultra sexy. This shade looks cool worn with a white tee and jeans, or sultry teamed with a black dress. We love how hydrating the formula is.

  • NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga, £21
A sleek slim slanted applicator ensures precision application of this dramatic deep plummy hue.

  • Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in Devotion, £8.99,
This gel formula glides on so easily for a featherlight finish that dries completely matte and delivers a super flattering mauvey pink.

  • Ciaté Liquid Velvet in Swoon, £17,
These matte lipsticks are extremely hydrating and a great alternative to a regular stain. The velvet finish ensures long wear and an even colour. Our favourite shade? This perfect peachy nude.

  • NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London, £5.50,
These silky smooth lip lacquers dry to a matte finish, with an opaque colour and incredible longevity – a MUST for a night out. We love this fleshy nude.

  • Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Orange Shot
If you don’t like a fully matte finish, this is right up your alley – you get the colour saturation with an almost creamy, satin texture.

The ‘Long-Lasting’ Lipsticks That Are Actually Worth Your Money

I don’t do makeup in the summer because I’d rather look unfinished than cake-y and sticky, you know? So reuniting with that part of my beauty routine is something I look forward to in the fall — especially when it comes to lipstick.

I love everything from subtle nudes to deep burgundies and bright reds that distract from my eyebrows that haven’t been threaded in two weeks. But I’m equally enthusiastic about eating a lot of snacks and messy foods and not having to constantly reapply throughout the day. You would think that wouldn’t be an issue given the number of lip products on the market touting long-lasting wear, right? Wrong! (I’m 100 percent looking at you, CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lip Color.)

Finding a formula that won’t smear all over your face (or cup, or teeth, or burger), that doesn’t dry your lips out after just a couple of hours, and will actually last throughout the day isn’t easy — so we tried a bunch out to save you the trouble.

From cult favorites to drugstore steals, check out six of the best lipsticks that will actually stay on your face.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, $22: This formula has been around longer than most and is still so damn good. The creamy formula glides on smoothly, smells really good (!?), and is super pigmented, so you really only need a light-handed sweep of color. It feels as comfortable on my lips as any matte liquid ever could (it can start to feel drying, but not overwhelmingly so, like my lips are about to crack). It rides the fine line of staying on through eating and drinking without being a nightmare to take off.

Milani Amore Matte Lip Crème in 20 Sugar

Milani Amore Matte Lip Crème, $9: Milani brings a little bit of glamour to the drugstore aisles. With a 25-shade offering, this lipstick is packed with pigment for just $9. It’s a good dupe for MAC’s iconic Retro Matte Lipstick — which is nearly triple the price of the Milani option — if you’re on a budget or want to test out a new color. For a matte lipstick, it didn’t dry my lips at all, although after eating the inner corners of my lips did fade a bit. But for $9, I don’t mind reapplying after a burger.

Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in Black Cherry

Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick, $14: There are more than 4,000 five-star reviews on Sephora’s liquid lipstick, and they’re no joke. It’s super smooth, easy to apply, and comes in 40 different shades. I’ve tried a handful, from deep reds (my favorite is rose wood!) to light blushes. The darker shades have the best lasting power, where the lighter shades can look a little chalky after a few hours.

Revlon Colorstay Overtime Lipcolor in Bare Maximum

Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor $11: This drugstore pickup gives you a liquid lipstick on one end and a clear gloss on the other — instantly a deal. There’s a decent amount of shade options whether you like to keep it simple or like something more flashy. It can be a bit sticky when you first apply, but after it dries and you throw some gloss on, you’re fine. It truly doesn’t budge after that, even after eating every snack the New York Vox Media office has to offer. That said, it is not! easy! to take off. But given the fact that this is what it was designed for, I’ll let it slide.

Nars Powermatte Lip Pigment in Slow Ride

Nars Powermatte Lip Pigment, $26: This guy came out earlier this summer, and it truly is so good. The formula is velvety and flexible; it’s one of the only matte lipsticks I can wear and forget I have on. It’s lightweight and super pigmented, and the doe foot applicator makes it really easy to make perfect lines around the edges of my lips. And because it’s more of a gel than a cream, it layers seamlessly on top of previous applications once I needed to touch up around hour six. I would strongly recommend this one even with the hefty price tag; it’s so worth it if you have a favorite color you know you’ll wear often.

Stay all day lipstick
