The Style&co. brand of women’s clothing and accessories is manufactured for exclusive sale at Macy’s stores. After several failures operating stores in Massachusetts, entrepreneur Rowland Hussey Macy moved to New York City and opened R.H. Macy & Co. in 1858. The business grew steadily during the last few decades of the 19th century, and the flagship store moved to its now-infamous location on 34th St. in 1902. Macy’s went public in 1922 and started to expand its presence to other markets across the country. In 1924, it established an ingenious advertising endeavor by hosting the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade–a popular tradition that still continues to this day.
By the 1940s, Macy’s had reached the West Coast, but its stores were still limited to relatively major metropolitan areas. It wasn’t until 1994, when Macy’s was acquired by Federated Department Stores, that the company began to infiltrate smaller markets. Changing its name to Macy’s, Inc. the parent company started converting its stores around the country into Macy’s locations, and the growth was further spurred by the acquisitions of A&S Department Stores and May Department Stores. Today, Macy’s operates about 850 stores across the country. The company distributes a number of private brands, including Style&co.
The bulk of apparel manufactured for the Style&co. brand can be considered fashionable casualwear. Tops include short-sleeved, long-sleeved, and three-quarter-sleeved tees and layering tops, as well as tunics, blouses, peasant tops, ponchos, and more. You’ll also find pullover sweatshirts, hoodies, turtlenecks, sweaters, and cardigans. Dresses toe the line between casual and semi-formal, which makes them perfect choices for everyday wear as well as a night out. Outerwear is mostly sporty and includes styles like windbreakers, denim jackets, bomber jackets, and fleece vests.
The Style&co. line of jeans is designed for both form and function. Many cuts include tummy-control waistband panels while others are available in petite and plus sizes. Some of the standard styles include skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, boot cut jeans, capris, and more. The brand’s denim collection also features a wide range of washes and colors. Other bottoms from Style&co. are designed for more specific situations. Slacks and trousers are perfect for wearing to work; sweatpants make excellent loungewear; and stylishly printed capris and leggings can spice up any outfit. Some popular Style&co. accessories include purses, totes, clutches, and wallets, as well as scarves, gloves, hats, wraps, belts, and more.
When brands start to blend casualwear with stylish designs, it’s easy for them to accidentally go too far in one direction or another, but Style&co. does an excellent job creating apparel that will satisfy fashion-forward individuals without alienating women who dress a little more conservatively. The brand’s clothes feature fun prints and pops of color that will help you stand out and make these garments your own, but styles are relatively basic and designed to accentuate comfort as much as fashion. Furthermore, since the line is manufactured for sale at Macy’s, you can feel completely comfortable putting your trust in the retailer’s longstanding history. For the brand’s quality and its extremely versatile selection, we give Style&co. 5 out of 5 stars.
