The Biggest Loser Is Coming Back to TV—and It’s Going to Be Totally Different

The Biggest Loser became one of the most successful weight-loss shows of all time since first airing in 2004. After a whopping 17 seasons, the show took a three-year hiatus. But it’s now set to return to USA Network on January 28, 2020, with a 10-episode season featuring 12 contestants.

For those familiar with the show, the new season is expected to be quite different than what you’ve seen before. Rather than highlighting only how much weight contestants can lose, the revamped Biggest Loser will focus on overall health and wellness, USA & SyFy Networks President, Chris McCumber told People in May of last year.

“We’re re-imagining The Biggest Loser for today’s audiences, providing a new holistic, 360-degree look at wellness, while retaining the franchise’s competition format and legendary jaw-dropping moments,” McCumber said in a statement at the time.

The revamped version of The Biggest Loser will also feature a “dynamic new team of experts,” according to a press release. A recent trailer for the show reveals that that team will include OG Biggest Loser trainer, Bob Harper. “We’re doing something different,” Harper is heard saying in the trailer. “These are 12 people who have struggled with weight their entire lives and are desperate to make a change. For a while, it wasn’t clear if Harper would return to the show, especially since his shocking heart attack back in 2017. Despite being the picture of good health, the fitness guru wasn’t able to escape his predisposition to the cardiovascular problems that run in his family—something he’s continued to be vocal about on social media. Now, Harper hopes his journey back to health will give him a newfound perspective as he returns to The Biggest Loser, he shared in the trailer. “After my heart attack, I was starting back at square one,” he said. “True change happens when a situation drives you over the edge.”

Harper will be joined on the show by two new trainers: Erica Lugo and Steve Cook. Together, the three trainers will work with contestants not just in the gym, but also during team challenges, and even in group therapy, as shown in the trailer. Participants will also be paired with chefs and life coaches as they work toward establishing a well-rounded healthy lifestyle, according to the show’s press release.

For those who aren’t familiar with Lugo, the mom and trainer spent years struggling with her weight. She’s inspired thousands of people on social media with her 150-pound weight loss journey, which involved making small changes that ultimately delivered big results.

Cook, on the other hand, is a longtime trainer and fitness model whose mission is to prove that the Biggest Loser isn’t about perfection, but rather passion, effort, and “getting crystal-clear on what you want your life to look like,” he says in the trailer.

Throughout its 12-year run on NBC, The Biggest Loser saw its fair share of controversy. In 2016, The New York Times published a long-term study of 14 Season 8 contestants, which showed that extreme weight loss, when done in such a short amount of time, could be too good to be true in the long run.

Researchers found that six years after being on the show, 13 out of 14 contestants regained weight, and four weighed even more than they did before participating in The Biggest Loser.

Why? Turns out, it was all about metabolism. The contestants’ resting metabolism (how many calories they burned while at rest) was normal before starting the show, but it had slowed significantly by the end, according to the Times. Now that The Biggest Loser is shifting its focus to a more holistically healthy weight-loss experience, there’s a chance this type of relapse can be prevented. It also helps that after the contestants leave the show, they’ll be given resources to help them sustain their new healthy lifestyles, Harper recently told People. Regardless of whether they win or lose, each Biggest Loser contestant will be given a free membership to Planet Fitness, access to a nutritionist, and will get set up with a support group in their hometown, explained Harper.

Of course, only time will tell if this new approach will truly deliver long-term, sustainable results.

After a four-year hiatus, NBC’s weight-loss reality show “The Biggest Loser” is back. Beginning January 28, a new 10-episode season of the series will show 12 contestants facing off to see who can lose the most weight for a cash prize.

The 30-week competition kicks off with a weigh-in to determine each contestant’s starting weight. Then, the participants are divided into two teams, with red and blue uniforms. During the course of each episode, contestants participate in a variety of weight-loss activities, including a timed one-mile race, group therapy, and lessons on nutrition and food preparation.

Along the way, viewers learn more about each participant, including their background, personal life, and motivations for being on the show. For example, PhiXavier Holmes (“Phi”) is a school counselor in Washington D.C., who began using food to cope when her father passed away, according to her bio on the show’s website.

Domenico (“Dom”) Brugellis is a dad, former chef, and food manager with the New York City Department of Education who’s “finally ready to find balance between his love of the Italian food he grew up with and maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle,” according to the website.

At the end of each episode, one contestant is sent home, based on which team lost the most collective weight, as a percentage, relative to their starting weight. The person who lost the least weight on the losing team must leave.

‘The Biggest Loser’ has long been critiqued for being exploitative and harmful, promoting unhealthy ideals and habits

Previous seasons of the show faced backlash and criticism for its premise — which experts have said is fat-shaming and harmful — as well as for the reported health problems suffered by former participants.

A 2016 study, published after the then-finale of the show, looked at 14 former contestants over six years, finding that nearly all of them regained weight after the show and experienced problems with their hormones and metabolism. Those issues were proportional to how quickly the participants lost a large amount of weight, researchers found.

Some of those former contestants have spoken up themselves. Ryan Benson, winner of the 2005 season of series, started his own show to address the ongoing issues he’s faced since then, including regaining the weight and then some. Bernie Salazar is a frequent guest on registered dietitian Rebecca Scritchfield’s “Body Kindness” podcast, where he discusses his journey from having disordered eating behaviors and body image problems to embracing that “his true, happy and healthy self was always meant to have a fat body.”

Experts have also said that the rapid pace of weight loss depicted in The Biggest Loser is up to seven times more than what is safely recommended. Contestants are shown losing as much as one to two pounds per day (or more), compared with the usual one to two pounds per week typically suggested for safe, sustainable weight loss, Insider previously reported.

According to the official description on the USA Network website, the new series will be a “360-degree view of what it takes to make a serious lifestyle change, rather than focus solely on weight loss.”

Press materials also note that contestants will be working to address what brought them to the show in the first place, including any physical, emotional, or social issues in their lives.

“Skinny does not always equate to being healthy,” host Bob Harper told the Washington Post. “This is about getting these contestants on the right course to living healthier lives — physically and mentally.”

The reboot is also reportedly taking extra precautions to make sure contestants are medically safe, including by enlisting nutritionists to create individualized meal plans, trainers to vet each workout, and keeping doctors on set to monitor contestants’ vitals.

But some experts are skeptical that the show has really improved, including Scritchfield, who’s also author of “Body Kindness,” a book about developing healthy habits and a positive body image without dieting.

While the changes to the show do reflect that our culture has become more body-positive, she said, the new version’s so-called holistic approach is just lip service, as long as the scales and money continue to be involved. “The best change they could make is to not air a weight loss show, period,” Scritchfield told Insider.

The Biggest Loser promoted it’s focus as helping people lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle, however the series – both in America and in Australia – suffered considerable backlash from critics who believed the show promoted unhealthy weight loss methods, unnecessarily intense challenges and even fat-shaming. At NBCU’s recent TV Critics Association Winter Press Tour, the current host of the American series, Bob Harper, trainers Erica Lugo and Steve Cook and Heather Orlando the head of the USA Network of Alternative Series, addressed the changes to the latest series.

Orlando explained that the network had re-examined the format of the series, to ensure that the episodes are “reflective of health and fitness today,” which in all fairness were probably needed given the original show was created 15 years ago.

Big changes for The Biggest Loser

For the latest 18th season, the contestants will be sent home if they lose the least amount of weight in the losing team, calculated as a percent of their their starting weight – instead of by being voted off by their own team members.

The reboot will also focus on ensuring each participant is as safe and healthy as they can be, introducing nutritionists who will customise and personalise meal plans for each competitor. Similarly, the trainers will evaluate the workouts as a precaution, and doctors will be on set to monitor the participants’ health.

After the show, there’s the after….care

Another big difference will be the long-term care for the contestants. Previously, critics claimed that the competitors regained the weight lost during the competition and little was done to prevent this.

The series now promises an “aftercare package,” which will allow competitors who are eliminated to continue their healthy lifestyle.

“To that end, one of the big changes we made this season was the aftercare packages for the eliminated contestants. Because we wanted to give the people who did go home early in the process the best chance at a healthy lifestyle … We just want to make sure that, maybe they don’t win the money, but we still wanted to give them a chance at a great life,” said Orlando.

The aftercare package will include a gym membership, suggestions for support groups and access a nutritionist.

This season, the series will also focus on long-term weight loss and health, rather than rapid weight loss for the sake of the competition.

To ensure that the participants aren’t losing an unhealthy amount of weight, they will have consultations to track progress. Each contestant will need to consume a set number of calories, and a doctor and a dietician will both go over each participant’s specific blood work and training routine during filming.

Why Is Keeping Weight Off So Hard?

Let’s take two individuals, both weighed at 200 pounds.

One person is at their ideal weight, whilst the other person just lost 20 pounds to get to this weight.

The second person who lost weight has a slower metabolism, burns fewer calories and experiences more hunger and cravings than the first person.

This ‘metabolic adaptation’ is just one of the biological factors working against a person who wants to lose and keep weight off.

Kevin Hall, the lead scientist behind the Biggest Loser study also highlights this important point:

“After you lose weight, your body’s metabolic rate will slow down. In other words, the number of calories that your body requires in order to maintain life is going to decrease.”

Dr. Rosenbaum, Obesity Researcher at Columbia University, also agrees:

“It’s extremely difficult to keep weight off because your body doesn’t want to do it. And on top of that your desire to eat increases.”

“The difficulty in keeping weight off reflects biology, not a pathological lack of willpower affecting two-thirds of the U.S.A.,” he said.

These biological challenges were also reflected within the Biggest Loser study.

For example, researchers found that the contestants constant battle with hunger and cravings, was due to their plummeting levels of leptin—a hormone responsible for controlling hunger.

Another factor that comes into play is drastic changes in environment and routine.

During the Biggest Loser show, Danny Cahill’s routine looked something like this:

Wake up at 5 a.m, go for a 45 minutes run then eat a healthy breakfast —eggs, fruits and so on. Bike ride up to nine miles to the gym and workout for close to two hours. Ride back home, eat a healthy lunch — skinless chicken breast, broccoli and so on. Go back to the gym for another round of exercise.

After the show, Cahill’s environment and routine drastically changed.

He started working as a surveyor, spending much of his day sitting down and working in front of a desk.

He could no longer sustain his routine of exercising for several hours daily.

Cahill has also mentioned during interviews that in order to maintain his current weight of 295 pounds, he has to eat 800 calories per day less than average man his size.

These struggles are consistent with the discoveries within the Biggest Loser study.

The combination of constant hunger, a slower metabolism and change in environment is a sure recipe for weight gain over time.

At this point, we could conclude the following:

“There is no point trying to lose weight, because after I lose weight, I’ll just gain it back.”

This is the wrong conclusion from the Biggest Loser study.

The findings within the Biggest Loser study doesn’t mean that losing weight is pointless and a waste of time.

It means that we need a better approach to weight loss that is sustainable over the long-term.

An approach that will keep you fit and in shape for the rest of your life.

A Sustainable Lifestyle

Long gone are the days of patiently grinding for several years to achieve your goals.

We chase the instant gratification of quick success with little patience for gradual results.

We idolize the model with the great body or the entrepreneur with the successful business and look for “new” ways to achieve similar success quicker.

The Biggest Loser study is a reminder and lesson on what happens when you achieve your goals too quickly—you may lose it all over time.

If you find that you’re constantly falling back to your old mediocre results—aside from the complex biological and environmental factors—there’s a simple explanation for this:

You haven’t changed your self-identity.

No amount of willpower, motivation, equipment or programmes will keep you off weight gain.

If you think and act like someone who weighs 190 pounds, so it will be.

If you think and act like someone who is a struggling artist and writer, so it will be.

If you think and act like someone who is struggling to get by financially, so it will be.

In the case of weight loss, your body and mind will constantly fight you to get back to the weight that is consistent with your self-identity.

It doesn’t matter how quickly you shed off the weight, you’ll gain it back over time.

This is why I’m a strong advocate of self-experimentation and finding a consistent healthy lifestyle that works for you.

The more consistent you are with your routine and the greater your self-confidence—the more your self-identity will slowly change over time.

Once your self-identity shifts to someone who lives a healthy lifestyle, your body will stop fighting and start working in your favour to maintain weight loss.
