Update Info in USDA National Farmers Market Directory by July 15

Posted On: July 5, 2016

Get ready, get listed! National Farmers Market week is coming (Aug 7-13) and you want people to find your market! USDA’s Local Food Directories can help you promote your farmers market. This tool allows shoppers to quickly identify you as a supplier of local food.

USDA will share the number of farmers markets listed in the directory with media and stakeholders across the country during National Farmers Market Week. The directory is also used by mobile application developers to help consumers find you and other markets across the nation. Last year, the Directory attracted over 400,000 page views. It’s the “go-to” resource for consumers, researchers, community planners, and more to better understand the size of farmers markets across the nation.

We want your market to be counted, but time is running out! New listings or updated information can be entered year-round, but must be entered by July 15, 2016, to be included in the national numbers released during National Farmers Market Week. Enter today to make sure your market’s included. It’s easy to register and takes less than 10 minutes.

While updating your market’s information, you’ll also be prompted to take a Farmers Market Manager Survey. This survey collects important data on farmers markets, which helps market managers continue to succeed by giving them a better understanding of the trends in local food. Please take a moment to complete this brief survey.

If you do not know if your farmers market is listed, then you can search the National Farmers Market Directory database to find out. If your market was in the directory last year, USDA sent an e-mail during the week of June 27th that has a direct link to update your market listing.

Even if your market is already listed, you should check the directory again to make sure all your information is still correct.

Here is how the Directory can help you:

The USDA National Farmers Market Directory helps you tell customers what they want to know about your market:

  • – Where and when your market opens
  • – Second and third market locations you operate
  • – What products your market sells
  • – Whether or not your market accepts debit/credit cards

If your market accepts the following:

  • – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • – Women, Infants and Children Farmers Market Nutrition Program (WIC-FMNP)
  • – Woman, Infants and Children, Cash Value Vouchers (WIC-CVV)
  • – Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)

Consumers can be provided with the following:

  • – Driving directions to the market they choose to visit
  • – Map of markets within a radius of their current location
  • – Map of markets across the state or nation

National Farmers Market Directory Open for Updates

April 19, 2011

On Monday, April 18, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) opened the updating process for the USDA National Farmers Market Directory, which is the official count of farmers markets in the nation. 2011 will be the first year that the directory will track markets with multiple locations and days of operation.

According to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, the directory is not merely a listing of the nation’s more than 6,100 farmers markets: it is also a resource for anyone interested in local food, small producers, and policy surrounding regional food systems.

The directory relies on self-reporting by farmers market managers, so it is crucial that market managers update their listing in time for the summer market season. Market managers can update their listing at

In order to have a market listing posted by mid-July, market managers need to send their update to USDA by May 1.

The directory will be periodically updated over the summer as market managers continue to submit listings to USDA’s database. The complete directory will be released in time for National Farmers Market Week, August 7-13.

USDA has tracked farmers market numbers since 1994, and since then, the number of operational markets has increased dramatically from 1,755 to 6,132. The directory also tracks which markets participate in federal nutrition benefits programs and information about seasonality and location.

The directory has already attracted a significant amount of web traffic: in the first quarter of 2011, the website attracted over 65,000 page views. It has also been featured as part of the CNN/Foursquare “Healthy Eating Badge” campaign, and on
