Do it Yourself Vapor Shower Disks!! Only THREE Ingredients!!

I used to love those vapor rub disks that Vicks used to make a while back. I haven’t been able to find them in years! Luckily, I came across an awesome Pin on Pinterest…Homemade Vicks Shower Disks. Her idea is fantastic! The only problem? She uses essential oils. This wouldn’t be a problem normally but I didn’t have the oils she was using. SO, I used what I had; a jar of chest rub!

Here’s your ingredient list:

  • Vapor Rub
  • Baking Soda
  • Water

Tools:

  • Mug
  • Spoon
  • Bowl
  • Silicone ice tray and/or lined cupcake tins

The first thing you’re going to do is fill a mug with water and put it in your microwave. Heat it up so that its hot but not boiling. I did mine for two minutes.

Once your hot water is ready, take a teaspoon full of your chest rub and add it to your water.

Watch the rub melt away!

You will start smelling the vapor at this point. You can decide if you want to add a little more of the rub if you want a stronger vapor. I added another teaspoon because I made quite a big batch! Now, pour your mug of vapor water into a bowl and add your baking soda over it.

I did it the other way around at first (baking soda then water) but found that I had to keep adding more and more baking soda because I had too much water. It’s easier to add a tiny bit of water instead of tons of baking soda to get the right texture! You want your combination to turn to a paste.

Once you have a toothpaste like consistency, you can pour it into your silicone molds or your lined cupcake tins.

Now that your vapor mixture is poured. Let it sit! The Pin says to let it sit for 12-18 hours. I let mine sit for 12 and they were still a bit squishy. Try to let them sit out for the full 18. DO NOT bake these! I cannot tell you what would happen if you heat them! Since we are using the actual vapor rub, we can’t tell how it would act if it was heated like that.

Once your disks are solid, they’re ready to use!

Simply take one into the shower with you and let it melt under the water. The shower will fill with the awesome vapors of the rub while the disk just melts away!

I can tell you I was so relaxed after smelling the vapors while making these that I actually fell asleep right after!! That might not mean anything to most of you but it’s pretty much a miracle for me! 🙂

This shower bomb recipe would be an especially good homemade Christmas gift for men, since they tend to be hard to make things for. All you need to make these DIY congestion relieving shower vapor tablets is Vicks Vapor rub, some small air tight jars and a few common household ingredients. Glitter was added to this batch for more festive flair (it will just wash right down the drain), but you can skip that if you prefer or add a few drops of food coloring to match recipient’s bathroom decor. When a nasty cold hits them, they will be very glad to have your thoughtful homemade gift on hand to help clear them up.

Attention DIYers! This recipe for Homemade “Vicks” Shower Discs is perfect for this winter. These shower discs have ingredients right from your pantry, and also call for a few essential oils to promote comfort and calm.

How to Use

To use, simply drop in the bottom of the shower when needed and allow the vapors to steam out.

It’s important to note, they can just sit and steam away, they do not need to come into contact with skin at all.

Essential Oil Ingredients

This recipe calls for Lavender, Peppermint, and Eucalyptus Essential oils available from Young Living.

If you are unfamiliar with essential oils, we will be happy to introduce you to them. to learn more and purchase Young Living oils for this recipe.

The essential oils are definitely *not* something we would recommend substituting here in this recipe, since they provide the vapor necessary for allowing these to work!

How to Make:

The other needed item for these shower discs is a silicone baking mold. This recipe can be whipped up in the kitchen, and the discs do need to go into the oven. A silicone mold is perfect to pop each disc out into a nice container…and also allows you to get creative with fun shapes, like the flowers pictured above! 🙂

Just throw into a pretty glass dish or mason jar and these can be displayed on the counter or shelf. If you need to purchase a silicone mold, Amazon has several to choose from here.

You can adjust the size of your shower discs based upon the silicone mold you decide to use for the recipe.

Not a Medicine:

As with any DIY, these Shower Discs do NOT substitute for any medicine. And, this post is purely for sharing a natural DIY and can not be substituted for any medical advice. See your healthcare provider! 🙂

Prep Time 10 minutes Cook Time 20 minutes Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Cup water, more or less, your goal is to mix up a paste…add slowly
  • 1 Tablespoon Corn starch
  • Young Living Lavender Essential Oil

  • Young Living Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl mix baking soda and water slowly until it becomes just a tad more liquid than a paste.
  2. Add Cornstarch

  4. Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes, allow to cool and remove from pan.
  5. Add 5 drops of Lavender, Peppermint and Eucalyptus onto each disc and allow the oils to soak in.
  6. Store in plastic container, mason jar or glass container.
  7. To use simply drop disc into bottom of shower and allow vapors to steam out for desired length of time.
