Q: I keep hearing about bee pollen. Should I take it or add it to my smoothies?

A: Bees are incredible creatures that provide us a lot more than just honey for our tea. They also do a ton of work behind the scenes in our food supply, driving the pollination process so that plants can grow and produce. In California, more than 1.5 million bees are needed each year to pollinate almond trees; due to bee shortages, many of the needed bees are trucked in from other areas in the U.S.

The products that bees create and/or concentrate also have a long medicinal history. Honey is an effective cough suppressant and the go-to “cough syrup” in our household when my children get sick in the winter. But the ailment-alleviating effects of honey pale in comparison to the touted effects of bee pollen.

Do not confuse this with royal jelly or honeycombs (two other bee products that come boasting health benefits). Bee pollen, as the name suggests, is pollen collected from bees. It is packed and concentrated in the hive for use by the queen bee. Chemical analyses of bee pollen show that it is nutritionally diverse, primarily containing carbohydrates but also protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Bee pollen supplementation comes with many promises, such as increased athletic performance, treatment of asthma, weight loss, and the treatment of addictions. However none of these claims have been vetted in a clinical setting. A 1982 study found no benefits in athletic performance of adolescent swimmers supplementing with bee pollen. And while in the past some people may have found a weight-loss benefit when taking a particular bee pollen supplement, that is just because it was laced with an illegal weight-loss pharmaceutical: The FDA recalled Classic Zi Xiu Tang Bee Pollen Capsules, a bee pollen supplement marketed for its weight-loss effects, because it was found to contain Sibutramine, a weight-loss drug pulled from the U.S. market due to increased risk of users having a heart attack or stroke.

A relatively unknown danger of consuming bee pollen is anaphylaxis. The potential anaphylactic danger of bee pollen supplements is compounded by the fact that it is often used to treat allergies. Initially reported in 1979 in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the risk of a severe allergic reaction is a real and scary side effect of a supplement that is lacking real clinical evidence to support its uses in traditional medicine. This unbalanced relationship between the potential cost-benefit and lack of solid clinical evidence for the benefit of bee pollen takes it off my list of potential supplements for my clients to use, in pill form or added to smoothies as a “boost.”

How Nutritious Is Bee Pollen Exactly?

In recent years, a number of scientists have published studies on the supposed health benefits of bee pollen. However, these studies are mostly on animals and have yet to be proven on humans.

Here’s what the research says about bee pollen benefits:

Relieving inflammation

Bee pollen may work similarly to anti-inflammatory drugs, according to researchers. In one study on rats, scientists found that bee pollen extract reduced inflammation in rats with swollen paws. Research on mice showed bee pollen had anti-inflammatory effects when used to treat their liver disease.

Working as an antioxidant

Researchers have found that bee pollen has very high antioxidant properties similar to those of fermented foods. Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemicals that exist in plant-based foods, usually those that are red or dark in color, as well as fermented foods.

Some common antioxidants include:

  • flavenols (found in chocolate)
  • resveratrol (found in wine)
  • lycopene (found in tomatoes)
  • vitamins A, C, and E

Antioxidants keep people healthy by counteracting oxidants such as air pollution and cigarette smoke that can damage the body.

Boosting liver health

The liver is responsible for filtering toxins out of the body. Researchers found that in rats, bee pollen helps keep the liver healthy and can even help the healing process after liver damage.

Researchers noted that the rats had no side effects in taking bee pollen, compared to silibinin, a medication that also contains antioxidants but can also cause harm.

Strengthening the immune system

A strong immune system is necessary for fighting off disease and keeping you healthy. One study found that bee pollen naturally inhibits allergic reactions in mice. Another study suggests that bee pollen has antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. These properties could help kill off bacteria and viruses, such as staphylococcus aureus, which causes food poisoning.

Working as a dietary supplement

Bee pollen could potentially work as a supplement that helps your diet and health. One study looked at rabbits that received a bee pollen supplement in addition to their regular diet. They had a longer lifespan and also greater reproductive success. They gave birth to healthier, stronger babies compared to rabbits who didn’t take the supplement.

Another study found that malnourished, old rats experienced improved muscle mass and metabolism after eating a diet that contained bee pollen.

Easing symptoms of menopause

Many women who take antihormonal medications often experience symptoms of menopause. One study found that some women with breast cancer who took a bee pollen supplement experienced fewer, less intense menopause symptoms than those who didn’t.

Reducing stress

Bee pollen can increase blood flow to the body’s nervous system, helping reduce stress. It’s also effective for tiredness, according to a review of bee pollen.

Speeding healing

Research shows that bee pollen can be used on the skin to speed healing, as it boosts blood circulation, kills bacteria, and moistens the skin.

There’s been a lot of buzz (pun intended) about the health benefits of these tiny golden granules—from aiding in weight loss to helping with seasonal allergies—but is there any real truth behind them?

Bee pollen, sometimes also called bee bread, is plant pollen that’s picked up by honeybees and brought back to the hive to be packed and used as a food source for the colony. As it turns out, the characteristics and nutrition of bee pollen depend on the plant from which it was gathered.

People typically take a bee pollen supplement, or sprinkle a tablespoon over their oatmeal or acai bowl. Bee pollen is made up of carbs, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. A tablespoon of bee pollen has around 40 calories, 7g of carbs (including 4g of natural sugars), and 1g of fiber. Plus, bee pollen can have over two grams of protein per tablespoon—more protein than the same amount of chicken or beef!

“A single teaspoon contains over 2.5 billion nutrient-packed flower pollen granules,” Susan Curtis, natural health director at Neal’s Yard Remedies, told the Huffington Post. “Bee Pollen is the richest source of vitamins in a single food,” explains Curtis. “A nutrient powerhouse of eighteen vitamins including a B complex, all essential amino acids, fatty acids, RNA/DNA nucleic acids, enzymes, and is at least 25% protein.”

Bee pollen may have lots of good-for-you compounds, but does that translate to being part of a healthy diet? We dug in to find out.

Bee Pollen Health Benefits

There’s quite a bit of research around the health benefits and uses of bee pollen, but it’s worth noting that a large majority of these studies have only been tested on animals. Plus, some of them are preliminary studies and clinical trials need to still be conducted.

Weight Loss

Studies show that malnourished animals who ate a diet rich in bee pollen had an increased body weight and muscle mass. So, if you’re trying to shed fat and gain muscle, should you sprinkle some bee pollen on top of your smoothie bowl? Well, not necessarily.

Here’s the thing—bee pollen may have earned a false reputation for aiding in weight loss because one type of bee pollen supplement did help users quickly lose weight. Classic Zi Xiu Tang Bee Pollen Capsules were recalled by the FDA in 2013 after they found out the capsules were laced with an illegal weight-loss drug, Sibutramine, and had dangerous side effects (like increased risk for heart attack or stroke). Yikes.

While bee pollen may not necessarily help you lose weight, it certainly has some other interesting health benefits.


One study found that bee pollen has anti-inflammatory properties comparable to over-the-counter meds. Additional studies have shown that bee pollen may help soothe burn wounds, relieve menopause symptoms, and even decrease multiple sclerosis symptoms in patients. More research needs to be done, but clinical improvement was seen in 100% of multiple sclerosis patients, and almost 73 percent of disabled patients were able to return to work.


You’ve probably heard that honey helps with seasonal allergies—and it does, but probably not for the reason you think. Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that may assist in fighting infections, but there’s no scientific proof that it’ll help with seasonal allergies.

The verdict is still out on bee pollen, though. One study says that it may help treat seasonal allergies, but it’s also worth noting that it can have some seriously dangerous side effects and even cause anaphylaxis. So if you’re allergic to bee stings or honey, you should talk to your doctor before trying bee pollen.

The Bottom Line

Though there are plenty of health claims around bee pollen, it’s definitely not a miracle food or cure-all. And because there have been some reported negative side effects, you should definitely talk to your doctor before trying it. If you’re curious about bee pollen and have the go-ahead from your doc, we recommend topping your smoothie or yogurt with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon for subtle sweetness.

Why do people take bee pollen?

Despite its long-standing traditional use, there’s little evidence that bee pollen has any particular health benefits.

A few studies have been promising:

  • One small study found evidence that bee pollen might reduce some side effects of radiation therapy for cancer.
  • Other studies looked at an extract of bee pollen and found some benefits in men suffering from chronic prostatitis or enlarged prostate.
  • Another study found that a product containing bee pollen (and several other ingredients) seemed to reduce PMS symptoms.

However, more research needs to be done before it’s known whether bee pollen truly helps those conditions.

There is evidence that bee pollen is not helpful in boosting athletic performance or stamina. The many other uses of bee pollen — from increasing strength to slowing aging — are largely unstudied.

As a food, bee pollen does at least seem to be nutritious. It’s a good source of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates. Note that bee pollen is not the same as other substances derived from bees — which are sometimes used as supplements — like bee venom, royal jelly, and honey.

How To Take Bee Pollen For Weight Loss

If you want to take bee pollen for weight loss, there are plenty of supplements on the market. You also have the option of buying the granules from a health food store, a farmer’s market or online. Here’s a short buyer’s guide that should help you pick the right product. Let’s start with the health foods.

What’s Online and in the Health Food Stores?

Online, you will find granules that have been freeze dried, canned or packaged in a plastic bag. The age of the granules is hard to determine. Companies use advertizing jargon like “fresh”, but it should be obvious that mass production and high volume sales would not be possible if the company gathered the granules from a hive on a daily basis.

The problem with the “not so fresh” choices is that they lose their nutritional value quite quickly. The same is true of other types of produce. Freeze dried would actually be your best bet in this case.

Dieticians have started recommending frozen vegetables over the so-called fresh produce you see in the grocery store for the same reason. Produce that is frozen or freeze dried right after harvesting retains its nutritional value.

The taste might not be to your liking, but if you want to take bee pollen for weight loss, you need all the nutrients you can get. It is the nutrients that curb your appetite and help you lose weight.

What’s at the Farmer’s Market?

If you were interested in some of the other health benefits, such as a possible decrease in seasonal allergies, the fresh local grown products you find at the farmer’s market could be a good choice. The granules also taste better when they are truly fresh.

Recent studies have revealed that enzymatic hydrolysates from bee pollen are beneficial for patients undergoing various diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and hypertension. The antioxidant properties were measured in a 2005 study, and researchers found that it has remarkable antioxidant activity. They witnessed high scavenging activities against active oxidative stress. Researchers even suggested that the inhibitory activities of bee pollen were similar to those found in fermented foods, such as natto, miso, cheese and vinegar. (4)

3. Protects Against Liver Toxicity

One 2013 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that chestnut bee pollen protects hepatocytes from the oxidative stress and promotes the healing of liver damage caused by toxicity. Rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage were separated into two groups — one group took two different concentrations of chestnut bee pollen orally (200–400 milligrams per kilogram a day), and one group was given silibinin, a medication that contains flavonoids.

The researchers detected that both treatments reversed the liver damage, but silibinin caused significant weight loss and death due to severe diarrhea when given to rats. These findings suggest that bee pollen is a safe alternative to the silibinin in the treatment of liver injuries and can be part of a liver cleanse. (5)

4. Boosts the Immune System

Bee pollen has antimicrobial and antiviral properties. A 2014 study published in Food and Chemical Toxicology evaluated the biological actives of eight commercial bee pollen purchased from the market. All of the samples exhibited antimicrobial activity. Staphylococcus aureus was the most sensitive to bee pollen, and candida glabrata was the most resistant. (6)

Bee pollen may also be a natural allergy fighter. A 2008 study conducted in Japan investigated the effect of bee pollen on mast cell activation, which plays a central role in various allergic diseases. The researchers performed in vivo and in vitro experiments and found that bee pollen does have anti-allergic action because of its ability to inhibit the activation of mast cells, which plays an important role in the early and late phases of allergic reactions. 5. Serves as a Dietary Supplement

Animal studies suggest that bee pollen can be used as a valuable dietary supplement. Studies have proved that mice and rats fed with pollen showed a higher vitamin C and magnesium content in the thymus, heart muscle and skeletal muscles. They also had a higher hemoglobin content and greater number of red blood cells after pollen consumption. Bee pollen has actually lengthened the life span of experimental animals.

An interesting study published in the Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition evaluated the effects of bee pollen on 40 New Zealand white rabbits. The rabbits were equally divided among four groups that received the same commercial diet. Each group was given a water solution containing no bee pollen or 100, 200 or 300 milligrams of bee pollen per kilogram of body weight. The female rabbits were mated with non-treated male rabbits from October to February and May to September.

For each season, 80 weaned rabbits originated from the females of the control group, and they were divided into the same four groups to begin treatment. Bee pollen treatment for the female rabbits at 200 milligrams significantly increased body weight, conception rate, milk yield and litter size. It also improved biochemical profiles of blood. The same dose of bee pollen also significantly increased the growth of baby rabbits and their survival rate until weaning. Similar bee pollen benefits were displayed in a 1994 study that involved pregnant rats and fetal growth. (8, 9)

These animal studies suggest that bee pollen has a high nutritional value and works as a supplement for animals with nutritional deficiencies. Researchers suggest that it can be helpful when given to children who have a lack of appetite or experience a developmental delay. It may also help malnourished children and adults, especially before and after surgery, when recovering from an addiction to alcohol, or when they’re under physical or mental stress.

6. Relieves Menopausal Symptoms

A 2015 study conducted in Germany found that both honey and bee pollen honey improved menopausal complaints in breast cancer patients on antihormonal treatment. Over two-thirds of the patients who completed the study reported an improvement in their symptoms.

Researchers suggest that bee pollen and honey may be offered to women who have failed to respond to other alternatives to cope with postmenopausal symptoms. They also note that the flavonoids found in honey and pollen have been found to prevent breast cancer, supporting the use of these products in women with menopause symptoms and problems with or without a history of breast cancer. 7. Helps Relieve Stress

Because of bee pollen’s nutritional and tonic properties, it improves blood supply to nervous tissue, boosting mental capacity and strengthening the nervous system that may be weakened by stress. Bee Pollen for Weight Loss?

Studies have shown that pollen helps in the recovery of muscle protein and energy metabolism in old rats exposed to severe food restriction, proving that it’s useful in the prevention or recovery of malnutrition. (14) But what about weight loss? Is bee pollen a metabolism booster?

Bee pollen helps regulate hormones, and it possesses metabolic activity — containing amino acids that help increase your metabolism by dissolving fat cells in the body. The FDA reported that it received more than 50 adverse event reports associated with the use of tainted bee pollen weight loss products from customers and health care providers. (15)

Without scientific evidence, it’s hard to label bee pollen as the “miracle weight-loss product.” But we do know that it can reduce inflammation, boost energy, and provide a range of important vitamins and minerals. It also has the power to support skin health and speed up the healing process, and for these reasons pollen is a useful supplement.

How to Find & Use Bee Pollen

Buy bee pollen from a reputable company or local beekeeper that you trust. Make sure that the pollen is free from pesticides and that the bee colonies are not treated with chemicals. You can find pollen in most health food stores and farmers’ markets, especially since it’s becoming more popular.

The most common way to use bee pollen is when it’s ground and mixed with foods. Ground pollen can be mixed with honey, cottage cheese or yogurt in a 1:1 to 1:4 ratio — this creates a mixed pollen solution that can be ingested throughout the day. If you’re trying to combat a nutrient deficiency, allergies, inflammation, stress or illness, take one teaspoon of mixed pollen three times a day.

Bee pollen granules are also available. They can be added to yogurt, cereal and baked goods. Granules can be blended to create ground pollen, which can be added to smoothies or sprinkled over salad. If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m incredibly afraid of pain — and thereby terrified of getting stung by a bug of any kind. So if I notice there’s a bee nearby, I’m immediately bolting down the street to get as far away from it as possible (while also respecting its right to exist, of course, as I know certain bees are endangered). That fear is basically all I know about bees, but lately I’ve noticed that just about everywhere I look, someone in the wellness industry is going on and on about the supposed benefits of bees, and telling me to add bee pollen to my diet. So I consulted with a couple of experts to get the lowdown.

What is bee pollen? Registered dietitian Amy Shapiro, of Real Nutrition NYC, explained to me that bee pollen is basically the food of young bees. They make it when they land on the flower by bringing honey from the hive, scraping off the pollen (which is the male seed of a flower), and using their legs to create a pollen granular. Shapiro noted that it’s crunchy like a chia seed, so some people like to add a spoonful of it to their oatmeal, yogurt, and smoothies, while other people take it as a supplement or capsule.

But what are people saying it does? Canadian scientist Timothy Caulfield, a professor of health law and policy at the University of Alberta and the author of Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash, told me that bee pollen is “one of those products that is almost given kind of magical qualities.” By that he means, people claim bee pollen can boost your health, that it has anti-aging effects, that it helps wounds heal, and that it can help detoxify the body.

So, does bee pollen actually have any health benefits? From speaking with the two experts, it seems like the health community is split on the topic of bee pollen. On the one hand, Caulfield told me that, no, bee pollen hasn’t been proven to do much. “In general, it is largely evidence-free. There aren’t any good clinical trials that show it’s beneficial for really anything,” he said. Furthermore, a 2012 article in Science-Based Medicine noted that the claims around bee pollen are “full of hype but are completely unsubstantiated by rigorous scientific evidence.”

But on the other hand, Shapiro told me that bee pollen does have some nutritional properties. She said that it’s 40 percent protein, and that it has a bunch of B vitamins and folic acid. Also, that same 2012 article acknowledged that a small study found it did have some anti-inflammatory properties. “There is no doubt that bee pollen contains many biologically active chemicals, and it is not implausible that one or more of these chemicals might have a medically useful property,” Dr. Steven Novella, of Yale University School of Medicine, wrote in the article. “It’s just as plausible, and a-priori more likely, that they will have properties that have negative health effects.”

Okay, but what does that mean? So basically, Caulfield says there isn’t enough evidence to consider bee pollen to be some magical healing elixir, but if you like the taste of it, sure — keep using it. “I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat bee pollen because of its nutritional qualities,” Caulfield said. “If you enjoy the bee pollen, if you enjoy the taste of it, go for it.”

Who shouldn’t use bee pollen? Well, first off, if you have an allergy to bees, you shouldn’t be using bee pollen. People with bee allergies can go into anaphylactic shock from ingesting bee pollen, Caulfield warned, and such a side effect has been seen in people who didn’t have any prior bad experience with bees. The way to figure out if you’re allergic to bee pollen is to check with a doctor and get tested, the scientist noted. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also steer clear of it. Furthermore, Shapiro added that vegans will likely want to stay away from bee pollen as well. PETA notes on its website that vegans can use bee-free products, instead of turning to honey, bee pollen, or royal jelly.

Bees produce a variety of products besides honey, the pollen is one of the more than seven different products. Propolis is the most well known of these products. It is resinous material collected from plants used by the bees to seal the cracks or openings in their hives. It is sold in health food stores, used as an additive to skin lotions, soaps, beauty creams, shampoos, lipsticks, toothpaste, chewing gum, mouthwashes, sunscreens, etc. Different plants have different characteristics, making is difficult to get a product with uniform medical properties.

Bee pollen has been called the beef steak of the bee colony and provides more and better nutrition than does the nectar. The pollen is very beneficial containing nearly all the nutrients required by humans.

Pollen is rich in protein, minerals, and vitamins. It is particularly rich in vitamin B12 and amino acids, but its remarkable properties are not fully known. It improves endurance, promotes longevity aids recovery from chronic illnesses and helps prevent some diseases. Bee pollen is a remedy for allergies and hay fever. Like the propolis it has a wide variation in the nutritional value depending on flower source. One teaspoon of pollen takes one bee approximately one month to gather if it works eight hours a day.

You may want to get more advice on the amount to take of bee pollen, but I take a teaspoon daily.

We use raw honey as our main sweeteners. Depending how refined it is it has a small amount of pollen in it.


If you have boxelder bugs like lots of people do this time of year use a cup of water and put a couple tablespoons of dish soap in it. When you put them in this or you can place the water and soap into a container, a square one being the easiest to touch them and they drop into it. This is a lot easier than putting them in the toilet or killing them. After a few days this can be flushed down the toilet or dumped outside.
