The Evening tea blend tastes like white tea, according to the company. They say that the tea tastes “far from bad” that could mean that it does not taste good.

They even suggest adding lemon, maple syrup or honey to make the tea taste better.

Three customers who bought the product from Amazon reviewed the product. It received a 33% rating for 5 stars, meaning the only one gave it a positive review, while 67% or 2 people gave it one star.

The top complaint is that Skinny Teatox works more like a laxative than a detox product and they experienced stomach pains. They also said that customer service is lousy as they did not receive any response from them.

Was I surprised? Not exactly. After further investigation, many of the ‘success stories’ on the site, and others, attributed their weight loss to a healthy diet and exercise along with the tea. Hmm. Things were now falling into place (or rather, the aliens had kindly returned my brain).

The site also recommended I follow their diet plan while teatoxing. They advised cutting out meat, dairy, wheat and basically everything except vegetables. Um… great?

This was the final straw. If the site was recommending a ‘clean eating plan’ and regular exercise, why did I need the tea?!

I believe in the benefits of herbal teas. They are full of antioxidants and other little beauties. Can they improve your health and wellbeing? To a degree, yes. Can they give you the body of Miranda Kerr, make your skin flawless or ‘detox’ you completely? Uh, no.

Many of these weight loss, ‘fit’ and detox teas use an ingredient called senna, which is a herb that irritates the bowel and causes a laxative effect. The short term effects? Most definitely weight loss, as you’ll be losing a few, er, unwanted kilos you were previously carrying around.

The long term effects? Dehydration, dizzyness, and in the long term the bowel could become reliant on this type of laxative in order to work.

In theory, using a detox tea could seem like a great way to lose weight and de-bloat. But what happens when you stop using the tea? Like any other ‘quick fix’, it simply isn’t as effective as a healthy diet and exercise.

My teatoxing experience was a good reminder of the fact that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And that I need to shut up and accept that I’m fabulous just the way I am.

‘DON’T BE FAT’ and other weight loss fads from the past that made us smile.

After over-doing it on sweet treats, savoury indulgences and pitchers of cocktails over Christmas, I decided that I needed to lose a little bit of weight at the start of January – not a lot just a little. I’m 170cm tall and weigh 58kg, which is perfectly healthy. But prior to Christmas, I weighed 55kg-56kg, which was the weight I wanted to drop back down to. I’ve never found it easy to lose weight and when, after going back to my healthy diet and workout routine for a short time, I found I wasn’t losing any weight, I decided to do a teatox with Skinny Teatox.

I just want to get it out there now that no one has paid me to write this teatox review. I went onto the website and paid every penny for the 14-day teatox starter kit myself. This kit comes with 14 doses of morning tea, 7 doses of evening tea, 14 doses of chocolate energy tea and a cute strawberry tea infuser. The full price is $90 dollars, which I think is a bit steep. But I managed to snap it up for $30 during a post-Christmas sale. Whoo!

If you’re unfamiliar with Skinny Teatox, the idea is that you drink the morning tea every morning or afternoon for the full two weeks and you drink one evening tea every other night, all the while following a healthy diet and active lifestyle. The chocolate energy tea is simply to fill the gap if you’re feeling hungry. The morning tea is meant to give you the same boost of energy that a cup of coffee would, whilst the evening tea is meant to create a laxative-like effect, essentially flushing your body out.

Skinny Teatox Taste

The teas taste…not great. Which is something I was really surprised about because I’m really into herbal tea and loads of review bloggers online said the morning tea and chocolate energy tea were delicious! To drink the morning tea, I had to add some lemon juice to make it palatable and after one cup of the chocolate energy tea, I didn’t bother with another. The chocolate energy tea smelled absolutely amazing dry, but it tasted nothing like chocolate. And the evening tea? Let’s not even go there. The creators of Skinny Teatox admit that the evening tea doesn’t taste the best and that’s certainly the truth!

Morning Tea Effectiveness

I think the morning tea did what it actually promised – after one cup of the stuff at around 6am, I really was full of enough energy to do my morning 5km run and get through my day without the need of coffee! But after I thought about it, I’m not one of those people who rely on coffee, you know? I regularly go a full day without any caffeine and feel fine for it, so I’m not sure how to take this one.

Evening Tea Effectiveness

The purpose of the evening tea is to create a laxative-like effect which flushes out your body – I totally didn’t get that. You’re meant to steep the teabag for 4-5 minutes, which I did first time and got no results. The leaflet said to steep the teabag for longer for a stronger effect. The last time I steeped the evening tea bag, I left it in the mug for a whole 12 minutes and still didn’t get any out-of-the-norm results.

How it Made Me Feel

I’m sad to say that I didn’t do the whole 14 day teatox – I stopped after day ten because I started feeling very ill. The tea is meant to boost your metabolism, which I think it definitely did for me. I was feeling a lot hungrier than usual – something which is difficult to deal with when you’re meant to be eating a healthy diet and my weight was fluctuating like crazy. On the final day, I woke up seriously bloated and heavy, but by the end of the afternoon, my weight had dropped 1.7kg – that’s almost 4 pounds – without doing anything unusual. That day I had an insane headache and I felt weak, light-headed and dizzy, so much so that I couldn’t even concentrate on my work. It was at that point that I stopped the teatox.

Did it Work?

In a sense, yes. I lost 1kg doing the teatox diet for ten days. I was only interested in weight loss – I don’t actually believe in detoxing the body using anything other than my organs, so I wasn’t looking for anything like that. But since the teatox involves maintaining an active lifestyle and a healthy diet, I think those two aspects were more responsible for my weight-loss. This is something I can definitely confirm because after I stopped drinking the tea, I carried on with my workout routine and healthy eating and I’ve continued to lose weight.

Would I Recommend a Teatox?

No. No, I wouldn’t. Now I see that I was hoping for a miracle in the form of a cup of tea which would make me lose weight without changing anything else in my life. It’s easy to get swept away with all those images on Instagram and Pinterest of beautiful, thin models with their hands grasping mugs of detox tea, claiming their toned bodies and good looks are down to this magic teatox, but after actually trying it out, I think it’s just an expensive fad which will go as soon as we stop giving it the attention it really doesn’t deserve.

If you want to lose weight, you can’t look for a magic tea. You need to change your life. Start eating healthier or eat smaller portions if you already eat healthy. And get up and move! You’ll be surprised how the weight will just start to drop off you if you go for a walk or jog everyday. In the long-run, you’ll be much healthier and happier by changing your lifestyle instead of paying $50 for some nasty tasting tea.

As of 2019, they boast that they are the “number one teatox in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Singapore, Netherlands, and France” and highlight that their products are “made with 100% natural ingredients that promote good health and weight loss.”

They also claim their teas can “burn calories, suppress appetite, and boost metabolism and energy levels.”

Sounds great, but is it all just marketing hot air and hype?

Is there really any evidence that you can “detox” yourself plus all these other benefits just by drinking a tea?

Are there any potential health risks? Or is this just yet another golden unicorn to piss away your money?

In this review, I will put Skinny Teatox under the microscope and evaluate their marketing claims, break down the ingredients, and weigh out the potential risk for side effects.

What does “detox” actually mean?

Before we get into Skinny Teatox’s specific marketing claims, it’s important to look at the marketing juggernaut that is the word “detox.”

What is “detox” and why is it plastered all over different products these days?

Popularised by questionable internet personalities such as self-styled toxin-hunter Vani Hari (aka Food Babe), the term “detox” has been recklessly bandied around with little consideration for accuracy of use – and frankly, it’s terrifying consumers.

But if you buy into the hype, then you are fat, tired, and unhealthy because “dangerous toxins” have accumulated in your body.

Scary stuff. If only it were true.

Scott Gavura eloquently provides a real definition for detox in a recent article on Science-Based Medicine:

“Detox” is a legitimate medical term that has been co-opted to sell useless products and services. It is a fake treatment for a fake condition. Real detoxification isn’t ordered from a menu at a juice bar, or assembled from supplies in your pantry. Real detoxification is provided in hospitals under life-threatening circumstances — usually when there are dangerous levels of drugs, alcohol, or other poisons in the body. Drugs used for real detoxification are not ingredients in a smoothie.

Review of Skinny Teatox marketing claims

Skinny Teatox makes explicit claims on its website that the product can not only “detoxify” and “cleanse” you but will also cause you to “lose weight, burn calories, increase your energy levels, and keep your appetite in check.”

But are these claims truthful and can the product actually deliver?

Claim 1: “Detoxify”

“Detox” is the primary marketing claim found across the Skinny Teatox website. But nowhere on the website did I find any mention of specifically WHICH “toxins” the tea actually “detoxifies.”

This is a critical piece of information. Are we talking about hexavalent chromium? Lead? Mercury? What’s the story?

How can you KNOW if the tea is actually working?

If you don’t know specifically which toxins were talking about, how much or how many are in your body before you start drinking the tea, and you don’t have a measure after you’ve drunk the tea, then how do you know it’s “detoxifying” you?

Claim 2: “Cleanse”

Following on from “detox” above, Skinny Teatox claims their teas will “cleanse” you too. To me, this sounds like similar marketing jargon that goes hand in hand with “detox.”

Remember there is no legal or standardised definition for “detox” or “cleanse” in a marketing context, so they can be used any which way a company pleases.

And for all this “detox” talk out there, remember your body has its own built-in filters your, liver, lungs, spleen, and kidneys.

But wait, don’t my body’s filters get gunked up with “toxins” and need a good “cleansing?”

It’s also important to note that many of the ingredients in Skinny Teatox teas are both laxatives and diuretics.

If your body’s bowel and bladder movements are normal, then you are naturally “detoxing” and “cleansing” yourself without the need of teas.

Claim 3: “Lose weight”

I believe this claim is truthful, but it deviates from what consumers expectations might actually be. I don’t think there is any question that you will “lose weight” if you are drinking teas loaded with laxatives and diuretics.

However, for many people that want to “lose weight,” their expectation is that they would like to reduce body fat from those trouble spots like the hips, thighs, belly, and arms.

And one of the quickest methods to check for “weight loss” is the woefully misleading bathroom scale.

Unfortunately, the bathroom scale gives you absolutely no indication if you’re losing fat, muscle, water, or anything else for that matter.

Bottom line: Can Skinny Teatox cause you to “lose weight?” Yes. Mainly in the form of water and feces.

Can Skinny Teatox cause you to “lose fat?” Unlikely.

You might lose fat if you’re eating a healthier diet and exercising whilst drinking the teas, but the results would mostly be due to your change in lifestyle over the teas.

Claim 4: “Burn calories, boost metabolism, increase energy levels”

There are countless products on the market that claim they can help you “burn calories, boost metabolism, and increase energy levels.”

Sounds great, but is it true? Yes, no, and kinda maybe based on your expectations.

Yes, it is true that Skinny Teatox products contain caffeine in the form of tea leaves and this may cause a small increase in how many calories you burn.

It might also make you feel more alert much like you would after drinking a regular cup of tea or coffee.

But now we have to look at these claims in a practical context rather than a technicality.

“Boost metabolism?”

Translated to plain English, a “boost” in metabolism means that a person’s calorie burn should increase and remain elevated after drinking the tea.

But exactly how many calories are we talking about? And how long is this elevation in metabolism? What evidence is this based on? Not much.

I performed a search of the medical journal databases and was unable to find a single study on Skinny Teatox that related to its effects on metabolism and calorie burning.

I did, however, find an article in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism which found that 12 healthy young male volunteers who consumed 200 mg of caffeine increased their metabolism by approximately 7% (or 13 calories in absolute terms).

Bottom line: “technically” yes, caffeine will bump up your metabolism, but unlikely in any noticeable or meaningful way that it will cause you to shed copious amounts of fat.

And since we do not know the actual amount of caffeine in Skinny Teatox, there is no way to know to what extent these findings apply, if at all.

Claim 5: “Suppress appetite”

This claim is true.

Skinny Teatox contains caffeine, along with ginseng, dandelion, liquorice, green tea, cinnamon, and cloves, all of which may exert an appetite suppressant effect in the body. This is desirable for people trying to lose weight.

Skinny Teatox ingredients list

Skinny Teatox claims their ingredients are “100% natural with no chemicals or preservatives.”

I was unable to find a complete ingredients list for each of the listed teas, but was able to scrape together this comprehensive list from their website and also by sending the company an email request for ingredients.

Tea leaves

Standard tea leaves contain caffeine which might make you feel more alert and suppress appetite.

Green tea

Green tea contains a small amount of caffeine which might give you a feeling of pep in your step and help suppress appetite.

Senna leaf

Senna‘s active constituents are called sennosides which stimulate the bowel and causes a laxative effect.

It is not clear which type of ginseng is used in Skinny Teatox products, but the effects can vary from one species of ginseng to another.

Licorice may help people with irritable bowel syndrome by soothing inflamed tissue, helping to relax muscles, and exerting a mild laxative effect on the bowels.

Chrysanthemum tea has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects in clinical trials (here and here).

Cinnamon bark

Cinnamon bark may be helpful for soothing irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhoea, and bloating.

There is inconclusive evidence on its effects on appetite, with some research showing it can increase appetite and other reports showing the opposite.

Cloves

Cloves are used for upset stomach and may relieve intestinal gas, nausea, and diarrhoea.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb exerts a laxative effect for the relief of constipation but care must be taken, as a high enough dose can induce diarrhoea as a side effect.

Rhubarb may also be helpful for a number of other gastrointestinal disturbances like heart burn and stomach discomfort.

Ginger may exert a laxative effect on the body by stimulating the bowels and may be useful for upset stomach, gas, and diarrhoea. It may also promote fluid loss as a diuretic.

Ginger might also stimulate appetite which may counter other ingredients in the teas that decrease appetite.

Buckthorn bark

Buckthorn bark contains chemicals which have a laxative effect for constipation relief.

Dandelion leaves

Dandelion leaves may exert a diuretic (makes you pee) and laxative effect to increase bowel movements. It may also increase appetite.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass may help improve digestive tract spasms and relieve stomach aches.

Burdock root

Burdock root has a diuretic effect on the body which will promote weight loss (not fat loss).

Peppermint leaves

Peppermint leaves may be helpful for digestive problems such as heartburn, nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Depending on the dose, it could have a laxative effect on the body.

Rosehips

The fruit acids and pectin in rosehips may exert a mild diuretic and laxative effect.

Rosehips might also help settle your stomach from irritation.

Safflower

Safflower may help improve blood lipid profiles and may possibly exert a laxative effect.

Cornflower

Cornflower may exert a diuretic and laxative effect to reduce water retention and relieve constipation, respectively.

Turmeric

Turmeric may be helpful for irritable bowel syndrome, stomach discomfort, and diarrhoea.

Natural lemon flavouring

I don’t have any other information from the company as to exactly what this means.

How Does Skinny Teatox Work?

According to the Skinny Teatox website, the morning tea is a “stimulant and gives you a steady and constant supply of energy throughout the day, increases your metabolism, and aids with appetite suppression.”

The evening tea purportedly “cleanses and detoxifies your body” and cleanses the colon to “flush out your digestive tract of toxins and unwanted excess which could be making it more difficult for you to lose weight.”

Given the number of diuretic and laxative ingredients, Skinny Teatox works by making you pee and poo a heck of a lot more than usual. This would explain the “weight loss” (notice I did not say fat loss).

If you define “detox” and “cleanse” as running to the toilet more frequently, then yes, maybe it’s “working” but it’s unlikely to be detoxifying you in any clinically meaningful definition of the word.

Any increase in metabolism or calorie burn is questionable and will likely be dose-dependent.

You might burn an extra 15 calories but in practical terms it will have no significant effect on your body fat levels.

Are there any side effects?

Skinny Teatox and other similar products on the market are unlikely to cause harm when used as directed (and for the short term). But there is always a potential for side effects.

Dehydration

First, senna leaves and a number of other ingredients in the tea exert a laxative effect on the body that could lead to diarrhoea and possibly dehydration, particularly if you are consuming a lot of the tea and leaving the bag in the water for longer than recommended.

Electrolyte imbalances and nutrient deficiencies

Second, the combined diuretic effect of many of the ingredients could further promote dehydration.

If you have diarrhoea, then it could further hasten dehydration and contribute to a dangerous electrolyte imbalance and nutrient deficiencies.

Low blood pressure

Third, if you have cardiovascular disease and are taking medications that promote fluid loss, then the tea could have a compounding effect which might further lower your blood pressure and make you susceptible to dizziness and fainting.

Reduction in birth control effectiveness

Fourth, by Skinny Teatox’s own admission, the teas “can potentially reduce the effectiveness of birth control if you take your pill within 4-5 hours of the laxative effect.”

Reduction in bowel movements

Fifth, the tea should be used for the short term. Long term use could result in your body habituating to the laxative which may lead to a reduction in bowel motility (leading to intestinal paralysis, lazy gut, and IBS) and make you dependent on the tea for normal bowel movements.

If you’re having problems with your bowel movements after using the tea, you should consult your doctor for further evaluation.

Weight loss abuse

Sixth, because the teas promote “weight loss” through increased urine and feces loss, consumers obsessed with quick-fix weight loss products may be at higher risk for abuse.

If you’re the parent of a teen with body image issues, you should pay particular attention to their use of the products.

The fine print: Skinny Teatox “results not typical”

Skinny Teatox is quick put the brakes on too much enthusiasm. On their website they state:

Testimonials, reviews and images found at Skinny-Teatox.com and/or from Skinny Teatox are unverified results that have been forwarded to us by users of our products; may not reflect the typical user experience; may not apply to the average person; and are not intended to represent or guarantee that anyone will achieve the same or similar results. You should always perform your own research and not take such results at face value. It is possible that even with perfect use of our products, you will not achieve the results described or shown. They are meant to be a showcase of the best results our products have produced, and should not be taken as the results a typical user will get.

In my opinion, if “results are not typical” then it’s misleading to only highlight the small proportion of anomalous testimonials that had great “results.”

It’s these types of disclaimers that make me think what we really need is a “detox” from advertising bullish*t. International laws should “cleanse” marketing claims to better protect consumers from being misled by myth, innuendo, and half-truths.

Does Skinny Teatox work? The verdict

Whether or not Skinny Teatox actually “works” depends on your individual definition of the words “detox” and “cleanse.”

If you consider urine and feces to be “toxins” then, sure, diuretics and laxatives will do the trick.

But it’s unlikely to fix that little mercury poisoning thing you’ve been dealing with.

You’re going to get real cozy with your toilet while using the product and you probably will “lose weight.”

But if your expectation is that you’re going to lose stored body fat, then you’re probably going to be disappointed.

It won’t turn your metabolism into a raging inferno, nor will it send your energy levels spiking through the roof.

You’re free to spend your money on whatever you please, but remember that no teatox on the market is a substitute for a healthy lifestyle that includes eating a nutrient-rich diet, doing regular physical activity, getting adequate sleep, and reducing stress.

In closing, my final recommendation actually comes directly from Skinny Teatox website:

Skinny Teatox should not replace a healthy diet or exercise! Use your head, and continue to eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, eat the recommended amount of calories per day, and be happy with who you are.

Teatox: The Newest Way to Detox

If you can’t stomach the green juices in most cleanses, there’s a new way to detox: teatox. These plans take tea-one of the world’s most popular beverages-and spruce it up with a variety of ingredients, promising results such as weight loss, detoxification, and increased energy, just as other detoxes claim.

And while there’s some evidence that drinking flavonoid-rich tea protects your heart, skin, brain, and bones; helps you manage stress and maintain weight; and fends off cancer and type 2 diabetes, there’s no published research to show teatoxes are safe or effective for weight loss or anything else. But since they are considered dietary supplements rather than foods, the companies behind them don’t need to prove any of the claims listed on the labels.

Although these products seem relatively benign, as with all dietary supplements, buyers need to beware before they use a teatox since the teas could interact with or alter the absorption and effectiveness of other supplements or medications.

It’s also important to make sure the products’ ingredients are safe. An ingredient of concern found in three of the four teatox brands I reviewed is senna leaf. This herb is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a nonprescription laxative used to treat constipation and to clear the bowel before a colonoscopy.

According to the National Institutes of Health, there’s insufficient evidence that senna promotes weight loss. But it does irritate the stomach lining to produce a laxative effect and can contribute to stomach discomfort, cramps, and diarrhea. Using it for more than two weeks (as you would following most teatox plans) is discouraged since it can cause abnormal bowel function or changes in electrolyte levels that can lead to heart problems, muscle weakness, liver damage, and other harmful effects. Since our bodies naturally cleanse and purify themselves by processing and eliminating them through sweat, urine, and feces, using laxatives like senna if there’s no real medical need seems like a waste (forgive the pun).

If your goal is to lose weight and get clean, skip the teatox. Instead, consume a nutrient-rich, calorie-appropriate diet that includes plenty of produce, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy in their lowest fat and sugar forms, and that limits highly processed and refined foods. Drink water, sip on regular tea if you enjoy it, be more active, and get enough sleep. Doing all of that is likely to be healthier and safer than taking a chance on an unproven and potentially unsafe concoction.

In the past few years, skinny teas have taken the $70 billion diet industry by storm. Using trending concepts like #teatox, #detox, and #cleanse, beautifully-packaged teas have crept from the Instagram feeds of celebrities and influencers into the Amazon carts of women everywhere.

So what exactly makes skinny teas different from traditional tea blends? Does it really work? Should you try it? We break everything down below.

What is it?
Though skinny teas come in a variety of forms, colors, and flavors, it’s typically a mixture of plant-based, caffeinated ingredients that claim to offer cleansing or weight loss benefits. The teas are often marketed as holistic and natural, bringing a detoxing boost to your daily routine.

How do you it?
A teatox blend is steeped in hot water like any other tea. Depending on the brand, there may be specific steeping instructions to prevent oversaturating your water with potent herbs.

How do skinny teas work?
Skinny teas typically contain a blend of different ingredients that carry a small bit of evidence regarding its potential to decrease weight, increase metabolism, suppress appetite, or cleanse your gut.

What ingredients are we talkin’?
The variety of ingredients found in proprietary tea blends is ever growing. Some common ingredients you’ll find are:

  • Yerba mate: This ingredient gained some serious attention in 2015 when a study suggested that supplementation of the South American plant may lead to decreased body fat and blood lipid levels.
  • Senna: According to Mayo Clinic, the herbal, over-the-counter laxative is said to make you go to the bathroom within six to 12 hours. Also, keep in mind that tea brands tend to stray from the “L” word, and use terms like “cleanse” or “detox” instead.
  • Saffron: Some research suggests that the brightly-colored, flower-derived spice may suppress appetite and decrease the tendency to snack.

Should you try it?
While we love tea as much as the next girl, it’s important to treat skinny teas differently from traditional teas. Since some herbs in skinny teas have the potential to interact with medications, cause intestinal issues, or cause long-term health damage, it is advised to use skinny teas under the instruction and guidance of a doctor.

Are there better options?
Yes! To help increase bowel movements, most of us just need more fiber and a hearty flush of water. In the long run, a balanced diet will do far more for sustainable weight loss than store-bought trends. So try to find foods, movements, and habits that work for your body, not against it!

The ingredients in detox teas are designed to give you energy. They may also send you rushing to the toilet frequently. Emptying your colon and bladder often may result in a small amount of weight loss.

But what you’re losing is mostly water — not toxins. This isn’t a safe and effective way to lose excess weight.

While these teas contain chemicals meant to “speed” you up (like ephedra) and be more active (a better way to lose weight), they can cause dangerous problems, like:

  • heart attacks
  • strokes
  • seizures
  • death

Diarrhea

Going to the bathroom more often means your body will contain less fluids and could become dehydrated. Dehydration can reduce the levels of electrolytes in your blood.

As mentioned, detox teas often contain high levels of caffeine. This can cause other negative side effects besides dehydration, diarrhea, and other digestive issues. These include:

Sleep disruption

Too much caffeine can also cause severe sleep issues. Generally, consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine — the same amount in four or five cups of coffee — is considered safe for healthy people.

However, detox teas may contain much more caffeine than is recommended in a single day. This can lead to problems falling asleep and staying asleep.

Drug interactions

Detox teas may contain herbs and other substances that can interact with certain prescription and over-the-counter medications you may be taking.

Diarrhea from the detox tea may also decrease the efficacy of your medication, as it rushes it through your system without being absorbed.

This is a common concern with hormonal birth control, which must be taken daily in order to be effective.

Other substances in detox teas, such as grapefruit, may magnify the effects of any medications you’re taking and cause serious side effects.

Detox teas are fantastic tools to help shed weight, detox, and cleanse the body.

The difference with these teas compared to other weight loss supplements is that they are natural and contain herbal ingredients.

Tea itself isn’t new or revolutionary.

It’s been safely utilized by millions of people for countless centuries for its amazing health benefits.

Many other “diet pills” or weight-loss concoctions are filled with questionable ingredients that usually cause more harm than good.

When losing weight, we want to take the utmost precaution and reduce or eliminate any potential negative side effects while maximizing benefits.

Thankfully, detox teas as a whole are very safe.

They have been part of numerous research studies that show their safety and benefits to individuals.

Some side effects that may come along with laxatives are:

  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Diarrhea or watery stools
  • Faintness
  • Nausea
  • Cramps
  • Gas
  • Dehydration
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Constipation

  • Muscle spasms (long term use)

Water is the simplest solution and preventative method to make sure you’re looking and feeling healthy while using detox teas.

Don’t take more than the recommended dose.

For the average healthy adult, the daily recommended amount of caffeine is 300mg – 400mg.

This has been agreed upon as a safe amount to consume per day.

As a quick cheat sheet, here are the average amounts of caffeine per 8 ounce cups of common teas:

  • Black tea – 60 – 90mg
  • Pu-erh tea – 60 – 70mg
  • Oolong tea – 50 – 75mg
  • Green tea – 35 – 70mg
  • White tea – 30 – 55mg
  • Yerba Mate tea – 30 – 40mg

If you’re sensitive to caffeine or stimulants, opt for teas with lower amounts, herbal teas, or decaffeinated options.

Drink stimulant teas in the morning or early afternoon to avoid any sleep disturbances.

Also, drinking these teas on an empty stomach may increase the effects.

Cut down on other caffeine sources such as coffee or energy drinks to make sure you stay within the safe recommended daily amount.

A Final Note…

As a whole, detox teas are very safe, natural, and can provide real help for those looking to lose weight and cleanse.

Remember that stimulants, diuretics, and laxatives can potentially create side effects in some people.

Actress Jameela Jamil has words about the ripple effect of mega-influencers like the Kardashians who proudly display the results of their “flat tummy successes” with detox teas. The star of NBC’s The Good Place recently went off on one of Khloe’s (since deleted) sponsored posts.

“If you’re too irresponsible to: a) own up to the fact that you have a personal trainer, nutritionist, probable chef, and a surgeon to achieve your aesthetic, rather than this laxative product… and b) tell them the side effects of this NON-FDA approved product, that most doctors are saying aren’t healthy,” Jameela wrote. “Then I guess I have to.”

Those side effects include cramping, stomach pains, diarrhea, and dehydration, among others. The truth is, no single diet drink or dietary supplement can induce weight loss, nor will it positively impact the metabolic functions already done by your organs.

Here’s the lowdown on this weight-loss tea trend.

What is detox tea?

Detox teas are different from other teas you’d buy because of the health claims they make on product packaging. That means they’re considered supplements in the eyes of the law —not food — and they aren’t regulated by the FDA.

Detox teas vary in their health or weight-loss claims, but popular versions like Flat Tummy Tea say they can:

  • Reduce your bloating
  • Support your metabolism
  • Help maintain a healthy immune system
  • Boost your energy
  • Detoxify your system
  • Decrease your water retention
  • Cleanse your digestive system

The concerning “teatoxes” contain cassia, senna, and chamaecrista — three plants also used in over-the-counter laxatives. Many also use psyllium husk, a form of soluble fiber often used in stool softening products, like the ones in your grandparents’ medicine cabinet.

These plant-derived laxatives stimulate your GI tract to help move things along. However, since the FDA doesn’t oversee dietary supplements like pharmaceutical products, there’s no guarantee that the sourcing of ingredients is safe or that the product works the way it claims to. There are more instances of adverse health effects and liver damage than there are of some miracle “cure” or vital organ rejuvenation found from drinking them!

Does detox tea make you lose weight?

A 3-day or 3-week teatox program cannot yield permanent results that are beneficial. You may lose water weight, but if you are, that may indicate that you’re losing a significant amount of electrolytes. Electrolytes help with muscle and nerve function, therefore impacting every organ system in your body. You may not notice an electrolyte imbalance until you have a muscle cramp (best case scenario) or cardiac arrest (worst case scenario).

This also means that any water weight you lose is probably temporary. If you get too dehydrated, hormones in your body send a signal to your kidneys to start retaining fluid once you stop drinking said teas.

If the end result of a teatox is bloat, what happens? For many of us, that feeling primes us to point the blame-finger internally and buy into the idea that either we didn’t do “enough” or that there’s something wrong with us — a shame-triggering cycle that can keep us on a diet-driven hamster wheel for life.

There’s another reason why cleanses and detoxes can backfire. If you’re attempting to fill up on calorie-free liquid for a set period of time, you’re simply surviving. You may not have the energy to leave the house — much less, the toilet. You’re also primed to feel starving once this detox period is over. The appetite-suppressing hormones during the “fast” reverse, and leading you to feel ravenous afterwards once you’ve had a bite of solid food.

Do detox teas really work?

Nope. As long as you have a functioning gut, liver, and kidneys, you’re always detoxing — ridding your body of the compounds you don’t need, or repurposing them for other beneficial uses. Enzymes in your stomach and intestine digest and absorb the nutrients you need and excrete what you don’t need via your kidneys, liver, and lower GI tract.

Drinking detox tea does NOT expedite the functions that your body already does all day, every day. Surviving on tea for the purpose of giving your liver a “break” is unnecessary. Without energy in the form of calories, you may slow down your liver’s detoxification systems, rather than expediting them.

Will detox tea speed up my metabolism?

A few small-scale studies — mostly performed in test tubes or on mice — have linked an increase in metabolic rate with drinking about 4 cups of caffeinated green tea per day. But detox tea isn’t typically made from green tea, and even if it were, you may not see much of a benefit personally. Genetics, personal caffeine tolerance, sleep, and physical activity levels also influence your metabolism, so how much drinking tea affects you is highly subjective (and therefore, not worth it for its proposed metabolic impact).

The only tried-and-true way drinking tea will help give you a kick in the metabolism? By helping you wake up to get your tush to the gym (sorry!). Since your metabolism depends on your lean body mass, building more muscle is a surer way to change metabolism for the long-term.

Why is detox tea bad for you?

As a registered dietitian, teatoxes are not only exploitative, they’re an irresponsible and abusive “interpretation” of existing scientific research, and serve only to propagate a myth that binging and restricting can make you thin — not to mention, happier and healthier.

I’m highly opposed to the idea that better health and weight loss can be achieved or encouraged through deprivation and restriction. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.

Products such as these only serve to bolster weight-cycling and depression, both of which can stem from disordered eating and are enhanced by social media messaging — especially among young women. Reality TV stars (e.g., the Kardashians) are bold enough to publicly admit that they’re shilling for cash without knowing much at all about the long-term physical and mental health effects of these products. A word to celebs who are keen on detox tea: Perhaps it’s time to reconsider your influencer marketing efforts for produce.

Here are some specifics as to why we strongly advise you don’t go there.

There’s not enough evidence showing they’re safe.

Most commercial cleanses are considered dietary supplements, which means that they are not regulated by the FDA. The claims about a product being crucial to your wellbeing are just marketing, not verifiable terminology with scientific backing. There’s also no mention of potential interactions with any medications you may take. Please, if you take nothing else away from this article, at least talk to your doctor before starting any supplement regimen.

We don’t know what’s in them.

If the ingredients in the tea you’ve purchased for $50 can’t be verified by the manufacturer, what they do in your body can’t really be determined. It also means that there’s a risk for contamination of substances you may not particularly want or need. In some rare cases, they can be highly dangerous, functioning like other types of hormones in your body such as steroids or thyroid hormones.

Reminder: They will make you poop.

Despite brands’ dispute of this fact, it’s more than likely that drinking lots of powders, sugar water, and herbs can keep you from leaving the house, thanks to the fact that you’ll need proximity to a bathroom at all times.

They can make you seriously sick.

In the best case scenario, drinking tea for the sake of helping your liver perform the tasks it already does is a waste of money, time, and energy. In the worst case scenario: Anything with a laxative effect can potentially result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies, electrolyte imbalance, disturbance to your blood’s acid-base balance, and ultimately a higher risk of hospitalization due to liver damage rather than the purported benefits of “detoxing.”

What is a teatox diet?

These diet plans involve drinking particular blends of herbal teas at certain times of day. Some plans will advise you to change your eating patterns, while others simply advise drinking the teas in addition to your normal diet.

Certain products contain ingredients in the tea bags, such as senna, which have a laxative effect, increasing the frequency of bowel movements. Many of the plans on the market have two bags, one to be taken in the morning and one to be taken at night. In some cases, the daytime tea bag is an energising herbal tea, whereas the night-time tea bag contains the laxative.

We asked Kerry Torrens for her view…

Can tea really help me to lose weight?

There is currently no scientific evidence to support the use of these products for weight loss. There is no reliable evidence to suggest that herbal teas and their ingredients, including those which have a diuretic or laxative effect, can aid fat loss, fat burning or prevent calorie absorption. It is likely that you may lose weight in the form of water, especially if there is an eating plan recommended. However, this weight will almost certainly be regained when you finish the programme and return to eating normally.

Can tea help me to detox?

Our bodies have an in-built detox system which includes the liver, kidneys and gut. You do not need to follow a specific detox regime or drink a specific tea to kickstart the detox process – your body is constantly working hard to do this for you, on an ongoing basis.

Are weight loss teas safe?

Some of these products contain ingredients, like senna, which have a laxative effect and stimulate a bowel movement. They may also include ingredients which act as a diuretic and promote the production of urine. Ongoing and abnormal loss of fluids may lead to dehydration and potentially cause you to lose valuable minerals like sodium, potassium and calcium. Used long-term, this might lead to complications because your muscles, heart and nerves use these important minerals (electrolytes) to function properly.


What are the potential side effects from weight loss teas?

As noted above, longer term use may impact the balance of electrolytes, which may lead to muscle weakness and other side effects.

Some of the ingredients in teatox products, like senna, may irritate the gut causing cramps, discomfort and loose stools. Furthermore, long-term use of laxatives can cause issues with bowel regularity and function. Currently, NHS advice is that, if you do wish to follow one of these programmes, you should limit your intake of a laxative-containing product. These should only be used occasionally and for a short period of time.

In addition to this some of the herbal ingredients may interact with medications and reduce their efficiency. These may include, but are not limited to, steroids and certain heart medications. The laxative effect of some weight loss teas can also cause medicines to move through the digestive system more quickly which could prevent proper absorption from taking place, potentially reducing the efficiency of certain medications such as the contraceptive pill.

Is there anyone who should avoid drinking weight loss teas?

Those under 18 and the elderly should avoid using weight loss teas. Those with an underlying health condition or who are on medication, including the contraceptive pill, should consult their GP or medical practitioner beforehand. In addition to this, anyone with emotional or psychological issues around food (including any history of eating disorders), or those with a low body mass index (BMI) should avoid using weight loss teas. Herbal weight loss teas are not appropriate as a weight loss strategy and if you do wish to consume them, ensure that you are also eating a healthy balanced diet.

The hype

Juice fasts are so 2014. The latest way to cleanse your body is the “teatox,” which supplements a low-calorie diet with large amounts of herbal tea. (The #teatox hashtag has over 300,000 posts on Instagram.) Proponents say teatoxing improves energy, clears up skin, boosts metabolism and promotes weight loss.

But is it true?

Tea is a broad beverage category, and includes those made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis shrub (both green and black teas come from this plant), as well as any number of dried herbs and fruit. While both green and black teas have been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, and antioxidants in green tea may reduce your cancer risk, there is little research about the health benefits of the herbs in your average teatox blend.

Teatoxing might cause weight loss because the prescribed teas include senna, says Dr. Esther Konigsberg, medical director for Integrative Medicine Consultants in Toronto. “Senna is a laxative that works by irritating the bowels,” she says. This can result in diarrhea, which causes weight loss through dehydration – a dangerous condition that can lead to malnutrition. Popular teatox programs come in 7-, 14- and 28-day packs, extended periods which can prolong diarrhea, leading over time to electrolyte imbalances, depleted potassium levels, and heart irregularities. Prolonging diarrhea can also put you at risk for “rebound constipation” as your body becomes dependent on the laxative to produce bowel movements. In other words: not a sustainable (or pleasant) way to lose weight.

“There’s no strong evidence for detoxing at all,” says Konigsberg. “Our bodies detox all the time if we are exercising and drinking enough water.” For healthy people who are looking to lose weight and feel better, she says, a diet rich in whole foods and regular exercise is a safer and more permanent approach.

What are the possible side effects of the Teatox?
