January is the perfect playground for any habit you’d like to try to establish or take to the next level. One popular option for people who love yoga: start a daily practice. Here are some of the best guides for a 30-day yoga challenge, and some tips on how to keep it manageable.


Who to Follow

There are a ton of ready-made yoga challenges that you can join:

  • Yoga With Adriene runs a January challenge every year, and you can find Day 1 of 2018 here. Scroll back through Adriene’s youtube channel for the yoga routines from previous years (hello 2017, 2016, 2015…) which can also be your inspiration for February and beyond, if you’d like to take this idea further.
  • Erin Botz at Bad Yogi has a four week challenge—close enough, right?—with a different theme each week.
  • DoYogaWithMe has beginner and intermediate videos for each day, ranging from 15 min to an hour, with most around 40 minutes.
  • Rinka Essel is starting a series of 5-minute yoga routines. That link goes to her introduction; as I’m writing, she hasn’t yet posted the first day’s video.


You can also roll your own challenge by doing whatever yoga you like every day. If you have a favorite studio, check with them too: some will run their own challenge, or you might be able to upgrade your membership for the month to allow for more classes.

How to Stick to It

Doing any exercise daily is only for people who pay attention to their bodies and promise not to overdo it. So if your wrists start to ache, don’t keep doing dozens of downward dogs. Try these strategies to stay healthy:


  • Have a few easy or soothing routines in your back pocket for those days you feel sore or frustrated. Try this “anxiety relief” routine that has you snuggle with a stack of pillows.
  • Bookmark a few short routines, too. There are tons of 5-minute videos that can save your butt if it’s bedtime and you realize you didn’t have a chance to get in your yoga today. This 5-minute beginner routine, for starters.
  • Meditate. Yoga teachers are fond of saying that yoga is really about breathing, not about what posture you put your body into. So if you’re not feeling up to a workout, sit and breathe for a little while.

Listen, I love practicing yoga on my own. Most of the time, it’s my me-time that I look forward to each and every day. But the truth is that sometimes it’d be fun to check in with a friend or a group of like-minded people on what they’re experiencing during the yoga challenge.

It’s fun to tell someone how much more open my hips feel, or how much longer I held plank pose.

Set Some Goals

Setting goals helps keep you motivated and make the entire journey seem worth all the effort. Whether your goal is simply to commit to something for 30 days or to finally master king pigeon pose, setting goals serves as the proverbial carrot during the yoga challenge.

Some of my favorite goals to set during these challenges are

  • certain postures or moves that are just out of reach for me
  • developing enough core strength to get into a handstand or other difficult yoga poses
  • building lower back strength and flexibility so that I can master dancer’s pose with ease
  • to be able to sit in meditation for X amount of minutes

Celebrate Your Gains

Even if you haven’t hit king pigeon pose (or whatever other yoga poses you have your eye on), that doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate your gains along the way. I remember the first time that I was able to touch my nose to the floor in half pigeon… it felt like I was on top of the world! Being able to stretch your body in new ways is something to celebrate. So celebrate! And trust the journey to get to your yoga goals in the future.

Choose A Challenge (And Then Stick With It)

With all of the online yoga videos out there, it’s easy to bounce around from one free yoga class to the other. As fun as that is, it kinda takes the routine out of the entire challenge…

…which is an important part of the challenge.

So plan out the set of yoga videos you’d like to follow for the challenge and then In the end, you’ll feel SO good knowing that you not only completed the challenge but that your personal yoga practice has improved with it.

Keep Track Of Your Daily Practice

At first, it’s easy to remember which yoga videos you’ve completed or which new asana you were able to accomplish… but after a week, two weeks, or a month, it can all become a blur. So be sure to mark your progress each day by writing down which routine or workout you completed, where you experienced noticeable improvements, and what your goals are for the next day. Has anyone else noticed how opinionated, generic and negative social media has gotten over the past few years? I have. I love seeing my friends photos of their days, kids, pets, food etc. I love reading funny statuses about things they encountered. Even being able to engage when something bad happens, it’s nice to be able to know and show support! But more and more social media gets overrun with bullies and drama. I had almost gotten to a point where I was fed up, but then I joined my first yoga challenge and my attitude completely shifted. The yoga community on instagram is amazing! The yogis are so kind, supportive, strong, beautiful and creative. I have met some of the best people since doing these challenges. Every time I decide to join another challenge it comes with a whole new group and chance to meet more and more amazing people!

It’s easy to think, no way, I can’t join a challenge. Then the excuses start piling up — I haven’t been doing yoga that long, I’m not very flexible, I’m not strong enough, it will be too hard, people might think I’m a joke. Leave all of that behind because frankly, it’s not true! Everyone’s yoga practice is different. Our bodies are different, our minds, strengths, weaknesses and stories all vary so much and they make us who we are. These are also the things that make each person’s yoga practice so unique and inspiring!

Just wait and you’ll see. The yogis who do these challenges are the best people. The outpouring of support is enormous and it’s truly beautiful how much you learn about yourself when you are vulnerable. So don’t feel intimidate — you will feel so empowered every day!
