Zooey Deschanel: Making the Healthy Life Rock

Zooey Deschanel is an original. With her retro-chic style and girl-next-door vibe, the indie sweetheart has charmed more than just her romantic co-stars in films like (500) Days of Summer and Elf. And later this year, shell do it again, enchanting James Franco (and the rest of us!) in the fairy-tale comedy Your Highness.

But the 30-year-old Los Angeles native—one half of the band She & Him, along with M. Ward—is also proving to be a force on the music scene with the recent release of her second vintage-flavored album, Volume Two. Here, the actress/singer/songwriter (and newlywed!) reveals how she lives it up the smart way. (Memo to other rock stars: you can eat healthy and get to bed early on the road).

Q: Youve carved out hot careers in movies and music. If you had to choose, which would it be?
A: I dont think its really necessary . But writing music is my favorite thing to do. With acting, youre carrying out someone elses vision—and musics mine. Being an actor is like a lot of stars have to align to make a really satisfying experience.

Q: Like (500) Days of Summer?
A: Yeah. That was a really fun movie.

Q: Is it harder to eat well when youre touring?
A: I find that Im almost healthier because I have to be really disciplined. I cant eat too much before a show, you go on stage feeling terrible. And I almost always visit health-food stores in every city Im in, just to make sure theres stuff on the bus I can eat—vegetables, fruits, lean meat, and nuts.

Q: Thats interesting. We always hear how hard it is for musicians to eat well on the road.
A: Its so easy! These people, I dont know who they are, because there are health-food stores in every city! The other thing is, I dont go out after shows.

Q: So youre not partying afterward?
A: No, Im not , because if I were to do that I probably wouldnt be able to sing the next day. The whole thing is, youre touring to perform, and you owe people because they pay money to come and see you play. I literally go to sleep after shows. And I always make sure to exercise.

Q: You used to be vegan right?
A: Not anymore. My older sister, Bones star Emily Deschanel, has been a very, very committed vegan since high school. I wish I could be like that, but Im not. I have a lot of food sensitivities—I cant eat wheat or soy—and it was very difficult to eat and get enough calories. It was even impossible to eat at a vegan restaurant.

Q: You love to cook. What do you make?
A: I dont really like sweets that much, but I find it really satisfying to bake for other people—cupcakes and cookies and cakes. I make a good quinoa spaghetti with pesto and zucchini. Pestos one of those things you can experiment with, and one day I was like, What if I used hemp seeds instead of pine nuts because theyre more nutritious? Ive made it for a lot of dinner parties. It was a hit!

Q: Do you have any other healthy-snacking secrets?
A: I try not to snack a lot. I know that sounds weird—some people think you should snack all the time. If I start to snack too much, I dont have an appetite for meals. So I eat three square meals a day, and if Im hungry, I have an apple.

Next Page: Q: So, no guilty pleasure foods?
Q: So, no guilty pleasure foods?
A: Actually, theres a bakery called BabyCakes in New York, and one in L.A. now. They make amazing gluten-free chocolate-chip cookies. I like to keep things like that in my freezer, just so I know its there, but I almost never touch it. Its weird. The knowledge that its there is enough, its almost more satisfying to me. Once its gone, then you dont have the option anymore. I like having the option.

Q: What fitness routine works best for you?
A: I really mix it up. I hike, run, bike. I do an hour a day, and then have a day off a week. And I took six years of tap dancing, and I love it! Its a good cardio workout.

Q: Sounds like variety is key for you.
A: Yeah, sometimes its even just a walk. Its just about being active. When I was a kid, I went through a period where I just liked to sit in a closet reading all the time. And then in seventh grade I joined a swim team, and it really was so great for me. It just made me feel so much better. It changed my personality.

Q: Whats your secret to staying motivated?
A: Meeting a friend to exercise. Sometimes I have friends come to my house to do a little circuit. And if theyre coming over, you have to do it. You cant bail out when theres someone else coming!

Q: You recently got married . What about your husband made you decide to take the leap?
A: Hes a great human being. And he makes me laugh.

Q: Are you thinking about kids?
A: You get married, and immediately everyone starts asking about that! Its like, I just wanna be married and work right now. Kids are way far off.

Q: Are you good at taking time for yourself?
A: Im not a spa girl. And I sort of go insane if I go to a place thats too remote. Just being at home and getting to have a couple hours where theres nothing planned is completely relaxing to me.

Q: Whats the best thing about being you?
A: I find the more I get to know myself, the happier I am—and the better I am. I think thats true of everyone.

Q:When do you feel most at peace?
A: When Im playing music, I definitely feel really happy.

3 Things You Dont Know About Me

  1. I dont sleep in. Im a go-to-bed-early, wake-up-early kind of person. I hate the feeling of waking up at noon. I always set an alarm, even on off days.
  2. Healthy cupcakes are my thing. Its called “crazy cake,” because no eggs are needed—you use the protein in the flour to basically bind the cupcakes. It just has cocoa powder, baking soda, flour, a little bit of oil, and apple cider vinegar. Theres a version in the book The Joy of Vegan Baking. Theyre always a hit!
  3. I play the ukulele. I was just playing it this morning, actually!

Zooey Deschanel Post Baby Weight Loss: New Mom Shows Off Slim Frame! Zooey’s Secret Revealed [Photo]

Only three months after giving birth, Zooey Deschanel shows off her slim post-baby body during the “Rock the Kasbah” premiere in New York City, Hollywood Life reports. Together with her hunk husband Jacob Pechenik, the “New Girl” star exuded the new mommy glow while donning a black, off-shoulder sparkling dress paired with matching black heels and dangling earrings.

Even though it has been a trend for new celebrity moms to pose for a post-baby sexy shoot with a magazine, Zooey told Cosmopolitan that she will not pose for a “body after baby” cover.

“Haven’t we all seen those pictures of a sexy new mom in a bikini after one month? I will not be that person. I’ve always gone my own course and never been someone who had the need to be super skinny. I like a healthy look. I don’t buy into that skinny-is-better mentality. I just eat healthy and work out and don’t worry about my weight too much. Actresses aren’t models, and most of them never wanted to be,” said the 35-year-old mom to the magazine.

During the interview, Zooey was also shared her thoughts on different topics. Regarding achieving success, the “Rock the Kasbah” actress shared, “I’m very focused. I work all the time, but I do what I love and I don’t care what people think of it. You don’t become successful by trying to be ‘a success.’ You become successful by doing things that give you pleasure. That’s a hallmark of mine.”

She also gave her thoughts on women in television, saying, “It’s a good time for women on TV. We can be funny in our own way … and funny doesn’t mean just one thing. Funny isn’t just one-liners. It’s big personalities and individualism.”

Meanwhile, even months after Zooey gave birth to their new bundle of joy, she and husband Pechenik just recently revealed their baby girl’s name. During the “Rock the Kasbah” premiere, the young parents revealed to People that they chose the name Elsie Otter for their three-month-old daughter.

Zooey said, “It’s Elsie…” while Pechenik followed, ” “Otter.” The “500 Days of Summer actress explains to People “Like the animal,” while her husband adds, “Sea otter!”

In an interview with “Today” on Tuesday, Zooey further explains the reason behind their daughter’s animal-inspired name. “We just really liked the name Elsie and then we both love otters — they’re very sweet and they’re also smart. They use tools … they hold hands while they sleep, there’s so many amazing things about otters. They’re wonderful animals.”

Elsie Otter is Zooey and Pechenik’s first child. She was born in Austin, Texas in late July, but the couple only announced her birth to the public in August.

Zooey Deschanel has not given birth yet, but she is already thinking about the pictures we won’t be seeing post-pregnancy.

The New Girl star has seen the “body after baby” photos that so many new moms post to share their weight loss after pregnancy, but in the latest issue of Cosmopolitan, the 35-year-old actress insists she won’t be joining them.

“Haven’t we all seen those pictures of a sexy new mom in a bikini after one month? I will not be that person,” she told the mag. “I’ve always gone my own course and never been someone who had the need to be super skinny. I like a healthy look. I don’t buy into that skinny-is-better mentality. I just eat healthy and work out and don’t worry about my weight too much.”

Deschanel further made her point by saying, “Actresses aren’t models, and most of them never wanted to be.”

And while there’s a lot of weight judgment out there for actresses, the mother-to-be does have some good news when it comes to being on television.

“It’s a good time for women on TV. We can be funny in our own way…and funny doesn’t mean just one thing. Funny isn’t just one-liners,” she said. “It’s big personalities and individualism.”

NEWS: Zooey Deschanel Admits She’s Having Trouble with her Pregnancy Diet

With a big personality that always shines, Deschanel even made pregnancy seem funny with Jimmy Kimmel in March.

At the time, she revealed that she and her film producer fiance Jacob Pechenik are choosing to be surprised about the baby’s gender.

“It’s more fun, you know? Make it into a game,” she joked.

Deschanel confirmed she was expecting back in January.

Martha Stewart debuted a brand new look on Monday after getting her hair and makeup expertly done for some upcoming holiday parties.

The 78-year-old took to Instagram on Tuesday to show off her bold new look and thank the many people that helped her achieve it. She poses at a New York City salon in a black turtleneck and earrings as she leans back in her chair. The star holds her phone in her right hand and has a slight smirk on her face in the snap.

“Oh boy! What a great new haircut can do!!!! Thanks @hairbyeugenetoye @ritahazan and of course makeup by @daisybeautytoye Ready for a slew of holiday parties!!!!Iphone case by @bandolier courtesy @Jamie Leigh Curtis hair colorist always @ParvinKlein @salonatbergdorf,” she captioned the post.

Stewart thanked celebrity stylist Eugene Toye as well as colorist Rita Hazan for the incredible hair and shouted out Nicole Daisy Toye for the makeup.

It’s a good time for the star’s hair to look uniquely great as she hung a lantern on hairstyle in October when she mocked Felicity Huffman’s style while she was behind bars.

Stewart was speaking at the Vanity Fair summit at the time when she was asked by the moderator if she had any advice for the “Desperate Housewives” star.

“She should style her outfit a little bit more. She looked pretty schlumpy,” the lifestyle mogul said when asked for advice. Schlumpy is Yiddish for a “sloppy or dowdy person,” per Merriam Webster.

Huffman was in prison at the time serving her 14-day sentence after being swept up in the high profile college admissions scandal. She pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. She confessed to paying an admissions consultant $15,000 to have a proctor correct her older daughter’s answers on the SAT. In addition to 14 days in prison, the actress received one year of probation, was ordered to perform 250 hours of community service and pay a $30,000 fine.

The 78-year-old businesswoman is more qualified than most to discuss prison-style, as she served five months in federal prison in 2004 for lying about a December 2000 stock sale. More than a decade later she’s seemingly bounced back.

The first thing Daisy does is set up all her makeup supplies on the kitchen counter, so everything is neat, tidy, easy to see and easy to access.
She uses a variety of different brushes and applicators in all different sizes – having an array is great for layering and perfecting details.
I like to use this beautiful chair made by my brother, Eric – a dentist by profession, but also an extremely talented and passionate artisan. He has been on my television show with his wonderful wood creations – I will share more of his work in a future blog.
I always make cappuccinos before we start our makeup routine.
Then, Daisy hands me a warm washcloth to wipe my face.
We start with a good moisturizer. I use Laura Mercier’s Flawless Skin Nourishing Cream Moisturizer. I also use moisturizers and serums by Cle de Peau, Sulwhasoo and Mario Badescu. http://www.lauramercier.com/
Do you know what this is? It is called the Beauty Blender sponge – it’s one of Daisy’s makeup kit staples. Edgeless, and reusable – it’s a big favorite. http://www.beautyblender.com/
Daisy uses Yves Saint Laurant’s Top Secret Moisture Glow Primer – a lightweight moisturizer that primes the skin for makeup. http://www.yslbeautyus.com/
Daisy also likes NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, and Cle de Peau’s Radiant Cream Foundation O20 with SPF – it gives a very natural and smooth finish – another big staple in Daisy’s kit. http://www.cledepeaubeaute.com/
Daisy and I are always seeking the best makeup products. My regimens sometimes vary depending on what commitments I have that day – television or print camera ready makeup is a little different than the makeup I use for event appearances.
Daisy likes to layer different products for the best look – there are many from which to choose.
While Daisy applies my makeup, we often discuss the latest beauty trends, the day’s current events, and technology – the newest digital apps and programs.
And, of course, the day’s schedule – sometimes we have several appearances or events to attend in a day.
For eye shadow, I use an all matte palette called Naked Ultimate Basics from Urban Decay. Oftentimes, Daisy will mix it with shades from a Chanel palette. palettehttp://www.urbandecay.com/ http://www.chanel.com/
As a celebrity, I’ve had to sit through many makeup sessions – many times, I start reading emails during the process, so I can get some work done at the same time.
After applying eye shadow, Daisy uses a Givenchy eyebrow pencil. https://www.givenchybeauty.com/en/make-up/eyes-eyebrows
Daisy is always showing me apps she loves to use. We stopped for a quick “selfie” so we could try a photo app she likes.
What’s next, Daisy? Here she is ready to apply Bobbi Brown’s Gel Eyeliner – we’re using Black Ink and Cobalt Ink – used in layers. These eyeliners are long-wearing with the precision of liquid liner and the ease of a gel-based formula. https://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/
Many makeup artists will dab liquid eyeliners on the back of their hand – this allows them easy access to it while applying, just as a painter uses their palette.
Daisy layers the eyeliner with Trish McEvoy’s Gel Eye Liner in Deep Aubergine – this provides great definition inside and outside the lash line.
This is Voluminous False Fiber Lashes by L’Oreal, which is inexpensive and available at many drugstores. Daisy’s tip: because mascara is something that should be replenished often, she never spends a lot on it – find one that is affordable and effective.
We are always trying new lipsticks – on this day, I used Givenchy Voluptuous Nude.
For bronzers, we use Bobbie Brown, NARS, and Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze and Glow. And for blush, Daisy uses Mac’s Mineralize Warm Soul. And, Daisy always finishes with Mario Badescu Rose Water Spray to set the makeup. http://www.charlottetilbury.com/ http://www.maccosmetics.com/ https://www.mariobadescu.com/
Daisy accompanies me on trips and various media appearances, but she can also be found at New York City’s famous Rita Hazan Salon. https://ritahazan.com/
Once we’re done, Daisy puts everything away in several clean and small pouches – this makes everything easy to find for touch-ups at shoots or appearances.
Quick, natural and long lasting for a busy day ahead. Thanks, Daisy!

Jenna Dewan Tatum Says Husband Channing Tatum Prefers Her Without Makeup

Gregg DeGuire/WireImage

Jenna Dewan Tatum can go ahead and toss her beauty products. That’s because her husband of eight years, Channing Tatum, thinks his wife shines brightest without any products on her face. “He prefers without makeup. Makes it easy on me,” she told People at a New York Fashion Week event on Thursday. While Dewan Tatum’s daily beauty routine would certainly be easier if she took her husband’s preference to heart, there’s one important person in the Tatum household that would be entirely against it: the couple’s daughter, Everly, who loves playing with her mom’s beauty essentials.

In fact, Everly likes to do more than just play with makeup-she prefers to cover her mom’s face with beauty products. “She did a contour. It was in the right spot. It was kind of amazing actually,” Dewan Tatum shared. “She goes, ‘Mommy let me freestyle,’ and I said okay. She has a really strong sense of creativity and I foster that.”

So even though Tatum thinks his wife doesn’t need an ounce of product, he’d never stop his girls from playing around with beauty. Luckily, Dewan Tatum is totally game. She’s even allowed Everly to cover her skin with face paint and glitter.

At the end of the day, Dewan Tatum believes that women-her daughter included-should do what feels right for them and forget negative external input. “We should just stop the shaming and the judging in general. Women who wear makeup say you should wear makeup. People who don’t wear makeup say you shouldn’t wear makeup. Just be you. So if she likes it great, if she doesn’t, fine,” she explained.

  • Lily James
We all know Lily James long brunette strands, her honey balayage and layered haircut – and honestly, we never imagined her going to the fringed side, but the actress just debuted a very different look…

  • Lily James
Behold Lily’s new ‘do – strawberry blonde, natural waves and yes, a fringe. We think it looks very French and quite edgy, do you like it?

  • Carey Mulligan
We’re used to seeing the stunning Carey with gorgeously glossy brunette locks, but not a fringe…

  • Carey Mulligan
… until recently, when she debuted this short choppy style. We think she suits both and can get away with pretty much anything, but may prefer her sans-bangs. What do you think?

  • Suki Waterhouse
At the Met Gala in 2014, Suki Waterhouse swept her bedhead waves into an ethereal up-do which was a marked change for the Burberry model.

  • Suki Waterhouse
…Because we’re much more used to seeing her with one of the greatest beachy and full-fat, brow-skimming fringe that just rests on her lashes. This is a tough one as Suki pulls off both styles to perfection but we do love a good set of bangs so we vote for Suki to keep the fringe, please!

  • Zooey Deschanel
Hold up, did we say Zooey Deschanel? Our New Girl crush is almost unrecognisable without her signature fully-loaded fringe.

  • Zooey Deschanel
That’s more like it! The look we fell in love with; Zooey’s been our fringe-spiration for some time now.
To fringe or not to fringe? OK, we admit she looks just as gorgeous without a fringe, but we vote for Zooey to keep the bangs forever. And ever.

  • Alexa Chung
Brit beauty Alexa Chung just oozes cool-appeal (what, that’s a thing) with grungy, shoulder-length centre-parted locks.

  • Alexa Chung
    Add a fringe and hey presto, Alexa’s a super-sophisticated doe-eyed beauty.
To fringe or not to fringe? Fringe please.

  • Emma Stone
Emma changes her hairstyle almost as much as she changes her hair colour (we said almost). We love this swept-back blonde up-do, especially teamed with that popping orange lip.

  • Emma Stone
We’re used to seeing Emma with eye-skimming blunt-cut bangs, in both blonde and burnt-orange tones.
To fringe or not to fringe? Keep mixing it up please Emma.

  • Jennifer Lawrence
Golden girl J-Law is one of those girls who could do almost anything with her hair and still look good.

  • Jennifer Lawrence
…But this soft highlighted peek-a-boo fringe was definitely a look book highlight.
To fringe or not to fringe? Somewhere in the middle – this low-commitment wispy fringe is perfect.

  • Jessica Biel
    Jessica’s ultra-glossy sun-kissed locks look super-chic worn in super-chic side-swept waves.

  • Jessica Biel
Her voluminous locks are perfect for wearing in a blunt-cut full fringe. We love Jessica’s feline liner flicks in this pic, too.
To fringe or not to fringe? This full-fat fringe just pips it.

  • Kerry Washington
GLAMOUR girl crush Kerry looks absolutely breath-taking with berry lips and sleek side-swept waves.

  • Kerry Washington
Yep, add a fringe and as suspected… Still gorgeous.
To fringe or not to fringe? You can go either way, Kerry.

  • Kim Kardashian
Side-slicked ‘do, fully-loaded lashes and glossy berry lips – Kim’s fierce.

  • Kim Kardashian
Kim’s eye-skimming fringe really softens her look.
To fringe or not to fringe? Not to fringe.

  • Kristen Wiig
    Hair colour chameleon Kristen Wiig
shines on the red carpet with centre-parted glossy brunette waves.

  • Kristen Wiig
A colour swap and some side-swept bangs later and Kristen’s completely transformed her look.
To fringe or not to fringe? We’re team no fringe, but team redhead. Can you mix the two, Kristen?

  • Leigh Lezark
We’d been so used to seeing Leigh Lezark fully-fringed, her first side-swept hairstyle gave us quite a shock. She looks stunning with her hair off her face, though.

  • Leigh Lezark
If you want to go for a full-fat fringe, this is how to do it.
To fringe or not to fringe? We’re just edging toward the no-fringe camp.

  • Reese Witherspoon
Hollywood glamour goddess Reese looks flawless with old-school waves.

  • Reese Witherspoon
    Reese adds a side-fringe for a more laid-back look.
To fringe or not to fringe? We prefer a classic side-swept look on Reese.

  • Rooney Mara
One of the most versatile beauties in the business, Rooney’s face is so strong she looks picture-perfect with all her hair swept back in a slick up-do.

  • Rooney Mara
Her daring cropped fringe is not a look that everyone could pull off, but Rooney looks flawless. Absolutely flawless.
To fringe or not to fringe? Either. Lucky ducky.

  • Rose Byrne
Rose looks beautiful on or off-duty with centre-parted brunette waves.

  • Rose Byrne
This full fringe, sharp lob (that’s a long-bob, people) and glossy red lip just takes Rose’s look to the next level.
To fringe or not to fringe? Fringe, all day long.

  • Sienna Miller
Oh, Sienna, how do we love you? Let us count the ways. We’ll start with those gorgeous blonde tresses…

  • Sienna Miller
Add a fringe and Sienna’s locks go from perfect to really, really perfect. Yes, we like Sienna’s hair a lot.
To fringe or not to fringe? With. Or without. WHATEVER YOU DECIDE SIENNA.

  • Taylor Swift
Country beauty Taylor looks stunning with super-smoky eyes and a wavy half-up, half-down ‘do.

  • Taylor Swift
Our fringe would never, ever, be this well-behaved. Hmph.
To fringe or not to fringe? Taylor suits both looks, but we prefer her hair off her face (so that we get to see more of it).

  • Bella Heathcote
Bella’s elfin beauty is not fringe-dependent…

  • Bella Heathcote
…But this has to be one of the best fringes we’ve ever seen.
To fringe or not to fringe? When bangs are this good, it would be a sin to lose them.

  • Florence Welch
Florence looks beautiful with centre-parted dark copper curls.

  • Florence Welch
This warm tangerine hair hue is our favourite on Florence, and her eye-skimming bangs are perfection.
To fringe or not to fringe? Fringe!

  • Lea Michele
Sunny ombre colouring and fully-loaded side-swept curls: this is how we love to see Lea Michele.

  • Lea Michele
This is one awesome set of bangs, Lea.
To fringe or not to fringe? She looks gorgeous either way, but the side-swept style just pips it. No fringe, please.

  • Liv Tyler
Not only does this picture give us a pretty ugly case of hair envy (how glossy are Liv’s locks?!) but it gives us a pretty nasty bout of face envy, too.

  • Liv Tyler
Liv’s oval face is given more structure with some peek-a-boo eye-skimming bangs.
To fringe or not to fringe? Not to fringe, for us.

  • Marion Cotillard
Oh Marion, vous êtes très chic.

  • Marion Cotillard
…Et avec le frange. (OK, we’ll stop trying to speak en Francais now. Sorry.)
To fringe or not to fringe? We loved the fashion-forward fringe, but we prefer Marion sans fringe.

  • Nicole Richie
Petite beauty Nicole looks gorgeous with slicked-back wet-look locks and retro eye make-up.

  • Nicole Richie
A full-fat fringe and a bit of body through her shoulder-length locks look pretty fabulous, too.
To fringe or not to fringe? Fringe, don’t fringe – go your own way Nicole.

  • Olivia Wilde
With a face like Olivia’s, you can afford to be pretty experimental with your hair. We love this easy-breezy brunette down-do.

  • Olivia Wilde
Mixing up the colour and the style, Olivia goes blonde and adds a long, side-swept fringe. Nice, huh?
To fringe or not to fringe? We hope Olivia continues to switch up her style.

  • Beyoncé
Beyoncé with long, straight honey-hued locks = flawless.

  • Beyoncé
Beyoncé with long, straight honey-hued locks + a fringe = also flawless.
To fringe or not to fringe? Let’s face it B, we love you with or without a fringe. But we really love you best…

  • …Like this. With your hair halo, hair halo, hair halo (and fully-loaded ‘fro).

  • Vanessa Hudgens
Vanessa’s voluminous raven up-do is picture-perfect. Just like her flawless make-up.

  • Vanessa Hudgens
We loved this edgy grown-out side-swept fringe on the brunette beauty.
To fringe or not to fringe? Vanessa is young and beautiful enough to play with her look.

Recently, there’s been a lot of speculation about Zooey Deschanel’s face.

“We barely recognized Zooey Deschanel!” was The Huffington Post’s headline after she showed up looking a little different to the 2012 Teen Choice Awards.

If she did have something done, it would be kind of surprising, given her status as an indie icon. Going under the knife (or needle) sort of goes against the whole quirky-cute demeanour she’s got going on, right?

So let’s examine her beauty evolution over the years and find out what, if anything, has changed. One thing’s for sure—the bangs are her Life Cut!

Zooey in 2001

Zooey Deschanel at a 2001 screening of ‘Hannibal.’

Let’s start with this pic of a 21-year-old Zooey. Nothing too dated here (except for the mustard yellow kerchief!). Her makeup is very simple and pretty. As for her nose, well, I think the next photo will convince you that she later changed it…

Zooey in 2003

Zooey Deschanel at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.

Surprise! Zooey, at one point, was a blonde. It’s not the best on her, is it? This is a great example of how bad blondes can happen when colourists are blinded by light eyes and fair skin. Unfortunately, it just washes her out (the hairstyle isn’t helping, either). As for her nose, from this angle it looks wider and more bulbous than the one she has now.

Zooey in 2004

Zooey Deschanel at the 2004 Independent Spirit Awards.

The following year, Zooey was finally on the brunette train. This is so close to the look that has become her signature today. The bangs are here, although they’re a bit short and clumping (as bangs are prone to do). But we’ll see improvements on details like that as time goes on—with greater fame comes a better styling team!

Zooey in 2006

Zooey Deschanel at a 2006 screening of ‘Winter Passing.’

At 26, Zooey started to show off a more definitive “indie girl” style, but it was more rock ‘n’ roll than quirky. I’m getting a bit of a Katy Perry vibe here—you? This type of haircut was very popular around that time, with the razored bangs and volume at the top tapering down to skinny ends. With heavy liner, her eyes really pop.

Zooey in 2007

Zooey Deschanel at the 2007 Sci Fi Channel upfront party.

In 2007, she committed to her signature bangs. They’ve been cut more thickly, so they lie flat to the head, and fall at the right spot, just below the brows. Somehow, she’s grown more voluminous hair. Extensions?? Also notice how different Zooey looks without makeup. Her go-to liner and lashes really change her look. I think this is still her original nose.

Zooey in 2008

Zooey Deschanel at the 2008 premiere of ‘The Happening.’

This look feels a bit uncharacteristically beachy, don’t you think? I can’t picture Zooey wearing these earrings or the coppery lipstick now, or having her hair so textured and tousled. Still super-pretty though.

Zooey in 2009

Zooey Deschanel at the 2009 premiere of ‘500 Days of Summer.’

I love this! Cute little bump at the crown with hair half-back and curtain bangs. We can’t tell what’s happening with her nose, but I don’t think she changed it… yet.

Zooey in 2010

Zooey Deschanel at the 2010 Hollywood Style Awards.

See? Same nose. The bangs are thicker, and by now, she’s getting in the habit of always doing something to emphasize the lash line. How incredible are her eyes?!

Zooey in 2011

Zooey Deschanel at the 2011 GQ Men of the Year party.

I feel like her nose is a bit smaller here, but it could be because of the dramatic lashes (which somehow look good on Zooey, but would be too over-the-top on anybody else). Her hair just gets better and better.

Zooey Deschanel at the 2011 TV Guide Hot List party.

Also from the same year, everything is more dramatic here… including the blush!

Zooey in 2012

Zooey Deschanel at the 2012 Teen Choice Awards.

Here’s the photo that got all the Internet whispers started! Her nose suddenly looks a lot more button-like, don’t you think? I think there’s some filler in her upper lip as well. Other than that, 2012 was a big year for Zooey in terms of style refinement. Her hair looks amazingly smooth and shiny, the bangs finally fall perfectly, and the eye makeup enhances without overwhelming her face.

More adorableness. Zooey’s hair and makeup look great. It’s amazing how the vibe is the same as before, but everything’s more polished.

Zooey in 2013

Another photo that got people talking was this one. No wonder—it’s because we haven’t seen Zooey’s forehead since 2003! Without the bangs, she looks like a different person.

Perhaps due to public outcry, Zooey went right back to the bangs we all know and love. They just suit her! Lashes and loose waves complete the look.

Zooey in 2014

To match her A-list status, Zooey now has A-list hair. This is the shiniest and most perfect we’ve ever seen it. And look at how nicely those bangs fall! Her makeup is getting more subtle, with a lighter touch on the lashes and glossy red-orange lips. Notice how the upper lip seems to have lost its 2012 volume.

Update: Zooey in 2015

Zooey had a baby only a few months before this photo, so if she looks a little tired, well, that’s normal! I prefer her with a lighter brown hair colour, stronger bangs and a more defined upper lash line.

Update: Zooey in 2016

That’s more like it! Now 36, Zooey looks fantastic. The hair is a shade lighter and warmer, which is more flattering with her complexion—as are the soft bangs and waves. Her makeup is subtle, with just enough definition around her eyes. Love!

I always assumed Zooey was all-natural. And I think she mostly is—but it looks to me like she had a minor refinement of her nose, along with a brief experimentation with lip fillers.

What do the pros say? According to Dr. Julian de Silva, a London-based cosmetic surgeon, Zooey now has a straight nose, narrowed bridge and shaped tip—all more refined and complimentary to her face compared to her nose in earlier photos. “Zooey Deschanel has a great looking nose,” he says. “The fact it is difficult to tell whether she has had surgery is a good sign. I tell all my patients, ‘If people you meet cannot tell you have had surgery, then we should consider this a success.'”

As for the lip injections, “her lips are more defined and accentuated,” says Dr. Vincent Afsahi, a Newport Beach surgeon. “Overall, she looks good, not over the top. Very natural.”

All in all, I think these changes have put even more focus on Zooey’s pretty blue eyes, although it may have taken away a little of that uniqueness she had before. C’est la vie in Hollywood! What do you think?

How do you feel about Zooey’s beauty evolution?
Which of these looks is your favourite?
What “beauty work” do you think she’s had done?

Zooey Deschanel is a singer and actress known for the fact that she doesn’t wear a lot of makeup. In order to keep her hair in its best condition, she uses Oribe conditioner and shampoo. Sometimes she even uses their hairspray.

When it comes to her skin, she usually opts for organic products to maintain the clearness and smoothness of her skin. One of the products that she uses is the organic cleanser from Laventine. She doesn’t really have a favorite brand, so she uses some others as well, like Clark’s Botanicals.

The singer also likes the pomegranate facial oil offered by John Masters. She rarely leaves the house without applying some sunblock, and she really likes the products of Josie Maran.

Probably you know that Zooey represents the company Rimmel London and she is a big fan of the eyeliner of the manufacturer. This is a product that she uses very often because it makes her eyes pop.

She manages to show off her colorful personality with the help of her nails. Zooey can often be seen with nail art on her nails and toenails. One of the most specific designs that were seen in her case is blue base with little white bows. Can it get more girly than that?

In order to take care of her nails, she often buffs them so that they look shiny and smooth.

Beauty diet

One thing that people could know about her is that she has many different food allergies. This is why at some point she became a vegetarian. Since then she made some changes and now she has vegetables, meat and rice in her diet. She really likes BabyCakes that are gluten free. For her the most important characteristic of nutrition is supposed to be balance and this is what she is trying to achieve.

Natural beauty vs. studied look

We can say that Zooey Deschanel is a natural beauty. She is the living proof that women don’t need tons of makeup to look good. In her case it is enough to have some eyeliner.

If you would like to look something like her keep in mind that one of the most important accessories that you have is your hair. This is why you have to take really good care of it. Make sure that you use only high quality products.

It is always a good idea to choose organic products like she does. So don’t be afraid to opt for organic shampoos and conditioners and organic or mineral makeup.

When I was a little bit younger
The strain I was under could make me cry.
Now I’m a little bit older,
A little bit bolder,
Never so shy.

Zooey Claire Deschanel (born 17 January 1980) is an American actress, songwriter and singer who performs with M. Ward as the group She & Him, and stars in the comedy television series New Girl.

I want to make people feel better, whether it’s myself, or a friend, or whoever. O-o-old habits die hard when you got, when you got a sentimental heart.

  • I don’t want to go to another roller-coaster ride of a movie. If I want that, I’ll go to Magic Mountain. I’m really interested in the young directors that are doing different things in cinema. I think the movies people will hold onto are the Rushmores and the Being John Malkoviches. Those are the kind of films I want to do; that’s what I’m passionate about.
    • Mean magazine (April 2001).
  • I don’t think I’m very much like anyone else, really. I’m sure there are aspects of other actors that I share, but I don’t see anybody else and go, “Damn, they stole my thing.” I’m me, and I like that there are people who have an appreciation for that.
    • As quoted in “From A to Zooey” in The Boston Globe (23 February 2003).
  • I have trouble actually describing myself because I’m always suspicious of people who start describing themselves. I’m like, “OK, why are you trying to tell me what you are?”
    • As quoted in “Zooey sings!” by Matt Pais in Metromix (21 July 2008).
  • I think a lot of what motivates me songwriting-wise is — this might sound silly — but, when I listen to a song that I love, it kind of makes me feel better. I think that’s the impetus behind everything I write; I want to make people feel better, whether it’s myself, or a friend, or whoever. I don’t know how to say this without sounding corny or banal, but I know a lot of people who are very hard on themselves. So this is sort of a cheerleading lullaby.
    • On her song “Me and You” on Volume Two (2010), in an interview with Evan Schlansky in “On Record : Zooey Deschanel of She & Him” at American Songwriter (18 March 2010).
  • My goal as an actor is always to be as truthful as possible, and to find the truth in the material I am representing. So I think that it’s the same with performing music. But in a way, performing your own music, it’s easier to find the truth in it, because it’s coming from yourself. There’s no translation needed.
    • As quoted in “On Record : Zooey Deschanel of She & Him” at American Songwriter (18 March 2010).
  • I would watch Wizard of Oz, like every day, when I was two. I had a hard time understanding that I couldn’t go into the film, because it felt so real to me.

She & Him : Volume One (2008)

Piece of the puzzle, you’re my missing part
Oh what can you do with a sentimental heart? I got to get your presence
Let’s make it known Think of all the beauty that you left behind you.
You can take it if you want it, and then let it go. I somehow see what’s beautiful in things that are ephemeral Love is just a piece of time
in the world
in the world
And I couldn’t help but fall in love again I’ve tried to express it
But I think its all a bore
Its at the heart of me,
A very part of me It’s nowhere in here
And its everywhere else that I don’t wanna be,
But I’m stuck here getting misty over you

Quotes about Deschanel

I think that one of Zooey’s skills in songwriting is the storytelling, and I hope that the production doesn’t get in the way of that, and I hope that the era that we’re living in doesn’t get in the way of that… ~ M. Ward

  • As you celebrate this special occasion with your family and friends, please know I am grateful for all you have done to encourage and support young women who are making a difference across our country. I hope your day is filled with love and laughter, and I wish you all the best for good health and happiness in the year ahead.
    • Barack Obama, in a birthday greeting (sent 9 January 2011), as reported in “Zooey Deschanel receives birthday message from President Obama” at CBS News (19 January 2011).
  • Zooey Deschanel is one of those rare artists to transcend the pitfalls of being an actor/musician. Together with the talented M. Ward, the other half of She & Him, she crafts beautiful songs that sound like vintage radio hits. Their debut album, Volume 1, wowed the critics. Volume 2 is even better.

  • I think that one of Zooey’s skills in songwriting is the storytelling, and I hope that the production doesn’t get in the way of that, and I hope that the era that we’re living in doesn’t get in the way of that, if that makes any sense.

It’s over. After Zooey Deschanel went Instagram official with her boyfriend, Jonathan Scott, on October 20, her estranged husband, Jacob Pechenik, filed for divorce citing “dissolution with minor children,” Life & Style can confirm.

The former flames were married for a total of four years. They share two children, Elsie Otter and Charlie Wolf, whom the film producer, 47, would like joint legal and physical custody of.

The news of their split broke a few weeks before the New Girl star, 39, made her first public appearance with Jonathan, 41, on Dancing With the Stars on September 30. “After much discussion and a long period of contemplation, we have decided we are better off as friends, business partners and coparents rather than life partners,” Zooey and Jacob said in a joint statement to Us Weekly on September 6. “We remain committed to our business, our values and most of all our children. Thank you for respecting our privacy at this time.”

While going through a divorce is no walk in the park, at least Zooey has the Property Brothers star by her side. Though they haven’t been together for long, they seem to be very into each other. The new couple even goes on double dates with Jon’s twin brother, Drew Scott, and his wife, Linda Phan. It’s a good thing Drew approves of his bro’s relationship with the actress. So much, in fact, that they share a few things in common.

“We have a lot of the same interests. We have quirky personalities,” he divulged to the outlet on September 19. It works out great because Jonathan dating Zooey means he’s in Los Angeles more, which is where Drew resides. “ both amazing people, and I think it’s great. And it means I get to get Jon out here to spend more time with us in L.A.”

Jonathan’s last public relationship prior to dating Zooey was with Jacinta Kuznetsov. The two called it quits in April 2018, and shortly after, Jon exclusively spoke to Life & Style to express his views on settling down. “It’s not even a focus,” he said at the time. “I’m loving where I am in my career and the fact that I get to see my best friend, Drew, marry the most amazing woman I’ve ever met. Linda and Drew are perfect for each other, so it’s nice to focus on those things.” We bet he feels differently now!

Zooey Deschanel’s Pantyhose Love Affair

No pantyhose enthusiast website would be complete without an article dedicated to Zooey Deschanel’s pantyhose love affair. The gorgeous Hollywood actress was born in 1980 and is the daughter of Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and Mary Jo Deschanel which starred in Twin Peaks. Zooey has played major roles in some awesome movies like the recent romantic comedy movie (500) Days of Summer in which she co-stars with one of our favorite actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Almost Famous, one of our favorite movies of all time about a boy who becomes a groupie for an up-and-coming rock band, which was released in 2000. She also pursues a career in music as a singer in the indie folk band She & Him.

Zooey recently shared on her website Hello Giggles that she is “a year round pantyhose girl” who “will wear pantyhose even if it’s 100 degrees outside”, something that every fan of tights has probably already noticed from her public appearances in which she often wears preppy whimsical looks with black and sometimes colored pantyhose to match. Although she complains on her blog post that pantyhose “do not accommodate skinny-ankled people” like herself we can safely say that, after having carefully examined some of her photos, she doesn’t any reason to concern herself about that since she has perfectly shaped legs and, even if her tights tend to crumble up around the ankles, that’s only going to add another layer of cuteness to her outfits.

Although this may seem like pointless bickering by Miss Deschanel we found out, after reading through some of the comments on her post, that many other readers share the same problem which reader Morgan Smith amusingly described as “chicken legs” syndrome as well as other issues related to the fact that some women are just not tall or small enough to cater the “one-size fits all” standard that so many pantyhose manufacturers have. Even with tights designed for different size patterns this issue may still surface so these are niches that brands should definitely take in mind.

Anyway Zooey if you’re reading this we know it’s part of human nature to always see some flaws when we look in the mirror but trust us, you have nothing to worry about!

Below are some of the best quality photos of Zooey’s outfits featuring pantyhose that we’ve found scattered around the web, feel free to take a look and tell us what you think about them.
